I think promotion is the only acceptable end to this season, I am about to re-new my 2 season tickets; if it is L1 next year I will not be doing. I want a storming start so for me I would want to see at least 6 wins from the first 10, and push on from there. If by late November we are not top 5 then what do we do; spend another year here and have 5000 n the ground.....
I think and expect CP to get season but I really do think that should we fail to get promoted or at very least get playoffs and just miss out then he will be toast. Nothing wrong with this speculation by us fans and denying it's relevance is ostrich like. We have no yardstick other than last season to go on as far as CP is concerned and we need to see better. I think we will.
Powell would have to yank me out of the North Upper at half time whilst putting a slide show of naked pictures of me on a cold morning on the big screen or do something equally offensive for me to vocally turn on him during a game.
Admitedly I got over excited and carried away on the sentimentality bus when he was appointed and with his 5 game win streak and i was probably blinkered with the disaster that followed so im hoping he gets off to a good start.
I think once the team has had time to bed in and gel then he needs to do the talking on the pitch. I expect us by Christmas to be in the playoffs or at least on the periphery and contenders for the top six.
Cant afford as a club to be sentimental if the season ends the same way as the last one as too much is at stake. As much affection as I have for CP I love the club more and its well- being comes first.
Feeling optimistic with the off- field activities in the past 6 months and its his job now to get the players playing. Really hope it works for him as would rather have success with a Charlton man and would dread the day i hear boos ringing out or him getting abuse that some of his predecessors endured..
I think the fact that the team is so new- Powell will have a plausible excuse if we don't start brilliantly. I think expectations will be that we are at least in the top 6 come November and get stronger as the season goes on - so I'd say the heat will be off him until October -but hopefully we'll start ok and it wont be on him at all.
But if we are in bottom 4 or 5 at any stage after game 3- the heat will be on.
The board seem like clued up businessmen who realise keeping the punters happy is important and the customer is always right (even tho with football supporters they are'nt always).
Based on that premise i dont think CP would be ousted in a strategic move or as some part of a masterplan more if the crowd is baying for his head as seen with previous managers.
Absolute masterstroke PR appointment from their point of view as has been discussed on here and elsewhere in great depth and id say CP is in a job until performances mean boos are ringing round the ground and people start voting with their feet. A scenario which i really hope doesnt ever materialise and hopefully with this new squad wont.
Personally I suspect the board will give him until November/December 2012 to have us up near the top of the league and looking like serious contenders, Provided there is continual improvement throughout this year and we at least make the play-offs. Promotion is the big target this year but I don't believe it's the be-all-and-end-all. Listening to the interview with Slater and Varney a few weeks back, parky's sacking was as much about playing style as it was results driven, even if he'd somehow kept us in the play-offs and got us up I don't think the board felt he could take us much further playing that way and decided to act sooner rather than later. Hopefully that'll pay dividends this year in the way it did for Brighton and Poyet, but if it doesn't I don't think he'll be sacked in the way that Huddersfield have stuck by Lee Clarke.
As for the fans, some will give him 5 minutes others will stick by him until the bitter end, just the same as with all the rest of the blaggards and scoundrels that been through our revolving manager's door since Curbs left (and indeed, to an extent Curbs got the same treatment). I hope, however, that the vocal majority stick by him for the whole of this season at the very least, unless things are going truly disasterously and we're fighting relegation.
Sorry Benny. Wasn't meaning to sound like I was having a pop - but this thread is just getting on my nerves. "How long has Powell got before we turn on him?". Why say it as if it's some sort of fait accompli?
Benny, can you please tell me the relevance with how well Brighton do then?
Sorry if i'm being thick.
It is alleged that Poyet was the 1st choice as manager, but since Brighton were then unexpectedly romping away with the league, it just wouldn't have looked right, if he'd come to Charlton / resign etc etc.
So Powell subsequently became manager after Howe faffed about.
Now if Powell is struggling & so are Brighton, Powell could be replaced by Poyet (allegedly).

We have so many new players they will need time

Fingers crossed.
He looked knackered and drained after Bromley Addicks.

given Parkinson's sacking once the owners came in I'd say November won't be a cert he'll need to be 1st 10 points clear of 3rd to be safe.

Anyway, all that's irrelevant as Powell is going to be fantastic for us and be our savior...........Let's have faith in the man.
