How long has Powell got before we turn on him..?

edited July 2011 in General Charlton

Keeping in tradition of giving our new managers 'X' amount of games before we realise he's not the right one for us, how long are you going to give Powell before you make a definitive judgement..?

Keeping in mind the old excuse of 'He's inherited a crap team' and 'This isn't his team' can no longer be applied, do you sit on the 'pragmatist's fence' and judge him on results or the 'rose coloured spectacles fence' and give him your undying love and devotion regardless of how things pan out..?

  • think november and were not anywhere near top 2 will have him called for the axe.
  • I do hope that amidst all the excitement of the new signings people appreciate that it might take a while for everything to click.I might be wrong, but weren't Southampton in the bottom four for a while last season?
  • 20 minutes in the North, 5 games in the West, 15 games in the East and the quadrants don't care - they just enjoy the day out.

Ultimately he has to be judged on results, but I don't think we can make an X number of games judgement now.

If we completely outplay our first 3 opponents, but lose them all 1-0, I'm not going to call for Powell to be sacked.

Get behind the team, and we'll be fine.

Bit longer in the west i think.
  • He looked way out of his depth last season. Hopefully he's learnt from it and got some advice (Curbs/Sven)

If we have a poor first 5/6 games he'll be under alot of pressure.
  • These are exciting times for Charlton and all us fans, Powell has built the team from the bottom up, it's HIS team, it's going to take time to gel, results might no be immediately forthcoming, everyone needs to be patient so I'm giving him until at least September...
  • Where's that piece of string?

Hope i'm wrong but don't expect us to come bounding out of the traps. Whilst CP doesn't have the excuses you refer to any more, equally, this will virtually be a new staring XI and the clear indication is that we will see a new style of play. That won't come in the first 6 games. Expect us to be inconsistent to start with and improve as the season goes on.

If we're not getting results and the performances are shit and CP is seen to be tactically inept, then these owners will not hang about.

There will be a period of grace from the supporters which I would put at 10 games.

Agree, hoping for a decent start
  • He still remains popular for now which is good but to do a managers job you have got to detatch yourself from the fans and just get on with the job the best way you can. He got a good send off at the end of last season when we finished 13th.

I think first 10 games will be ok, probably about mid table. Lets hope people dont turn on him too early whatever happens. We usually have good starts to the season with no end result, hopefully this might be the opposite.

  • If we aren't 10 points clear by the end of September, then the knee-jerk reaction from the self styled "Realists" will kick in.

We're rebuilding from the beginning here, it will take a little time - get behind the team and give it your support.
  • I think about 20 minutes into the first game for some.
  • If we're not doing well by November then i think he'll get the bullet and you couldn't really argue with that. Hope that isn't the case.

  • First half of the Welling game
  • Cant sack anymore bosses so soon, that will just lead to another turn over of staff and players.
Does anyone know just how many players/staff have come in and out of the valley since curbs left ?

I have found out from a very reliable source that he has seven games to do the business. Let's hope he does as I don't think I could take any more changes!

    hmmm.
Not impressed with this, if true. Myopic.
    Not impressed at all.
It also begs the question. What is the definition of doing 'the business'?
Attractive football? 21 points? Where is the benefit in re-shaping the whole squad and staff to a new manager?

If your very reliable source knows, then so does CP and the squad.
Dreadful leadership from the board if this is the case.
  • I agree with the general feeling here that it will take a little time for this new team to settle down. I feel if things don't go well it would be a mistake to sack Powell after a couple of months and then have someone else come in and want to change the whole squad in January - that's how teams end up getting relegated, not promoted.

Seven games to clinch promotion?  Hmmm, I reckon it's a tall order - last year, even Brighton took until April.
  • Ha ha! You know what I mean. They want evidence that he's the man to take them out of this league. If not, he's out after just seven games. I personally don't think that's long enough. If the players have been signed on 2-3 year deals, SCP should be given a decent amount of time to get them playing competitively as a unit, surely?

Of course, if we lose our first seven games I'd be right at the front calling for his head! ;-)

  • Are you lot the same people who used to walk round the street with a board saying ' The end of the World is nigh ' ? We need positivity and support right now, not doom and gloom.
  • I really hope he's wrong, as I was very shocked to hear it myself. Only time will tell I guess, but I honestly feel that we'll do well this season.

It seems strange to allow Powell to bring in so many new players on, as you say longish contracts for this level, if he is only to be given less than 10 games....

I'm not intending to imply that I don't believe you or your source but, to my simple little mind, it doesn't make a lot of sense.

  • I believe Paul Hart has been signed up (currently in the youth set-up) as a safety blanket if it all goes tits up. 10 games max if we're not  (at least) competitive.

I know, it seems ridiculous doesn't it? But nothing would surprise me in football anymore. As I said, even if it is true I don't think it'll matter as we should do well this year with the signings we've made. I'm looking forward to it for the first time in a while!

No he hasn't. He's been signed to run the youth set-up. Nothing more, nothing less.

    If we don't beat Welling...

  • Seriously, do we really need this sort of thread right now?

  • Give him the season. Putting a new squad together even with all the potential that it has may take a while to fire on all cylinders. Even if we are mid table come the turn of the year a solid second half of the season could see us up.

Can we not get rid of this please? Not having a pop at your very first post nor saying your 'source' is lying but this is exactly the sort of balls that gets picked up by the press (and we do have journo's on here) and reported as "fact".

True or not, I don't think that sort of unsubstantiated rumour (and that's all it is unless you've a hotline to the Mysterons) is very helpful to our preparations to the season.

    Welcome to the board BTW.
