It is very simple, Powell refered to Jose as a captain without the armband a few weeks ago, and is now talking about progressing Jose's roll as a box to box player instead of a defensive player. That for me suggests CP wants to keep him. Obviously the interview on top of the emotion showed on Saturday would suggest Jose wants to stay.
Put them two things together and It's a no brainer.
Also, Just because palarse and smallwall are having their brief time in the spotlight this year, don't ever forget that them two togehter will never be as big as CAFC. There is only one Premier club in South London and Jose has been here long enough to know that!
A squad containing the following has to be strong in midfield in terms of options and cover - Semedo - JJ - Parrett - Stewart - Racon . How many other sides in this league have collectively better vying for a central midfield slot. We really have underachieved - but maybe things are now on the up.
I would definitely like to see him here next season. Perhaps he's been out of form since Xmas - and so have lot of them – but he is definitely one of our better players.
As for Ooh Aah's seemingly valid point about the lack of clean sheets and Semedo as our defensive midfielder having to shoulder some of the responsibility for that - most of the goals we are conceding seem to be from individual errors by the back four or the keeper - not a lot any defensive midfielder could do about that.
[cite]Posted By: Ketman[/cite]I am with Large & Ooh Aah on this, some people really do have short memories. He has been part of the mIdfield that has failed for the last four seasons. I am not in anyway against him being offered a new contract, just think we should have a slightly more dynamic midfield if we are to ever entertain going up next season, doubtful we would with Semedo in central midfield every week in my humble opinion.
Me too. TBF he looks like one of those a players who needs a new club to recapture his best form but this season he's has been particularly unimpressive when we needed him most. I think a lot of people are confusing effort with capability and also imposing their own views and wishes on a professional footballer hence the "He'll never play for Millwall of Palace" type comments. He'll join whichever club offers him the best deal.
I'd love to see him stay and prove me wrong but I think we've already seen the best of Jose.
Would be happy for him to stay but rather see him in a midfield 3. He might be able to get the odd goal but he's not going to suddenley turn into a proper box to box player with a bit of coaching and encouragement. His weaknesses in a 4-4-2 limit what we can do going forward. That's not to say he hasn't done a good job in this division, he was still a better option than others we've had while in this league.
Really depends what Powell's plans are, he's now playing 4-4-2, but is that just temporary until he can change the squad around in the summer? I don't see Semedo as a full back, can do a job there but it doesn't quite suit him. Not convinced about centre back unless he's alongside someone quick, strong and very good in the air.
think the overall playing budget will stay the same as this year, around 4m, but by getting Racon, Semedo's and Youga's current high salaries off the books the 'extra' 1m will give a lot more scope in recruiting players from elsewhere.
[cite]Posted By: cholland[/cite]The problem is that you offer him half what he is on now as that will be next season's budget - will he take it or just stop playing a useful role.
Surely they budget will go up? The board will need to spend a fair bit on fees and wages to build the sort of squad they're planning to build. Or at least that's the impression Slater gives, we're not going to improve on this season if we're just looking for bargains and paying them £2-3k a week.
It isn't just in comparrison to what we are paying him now- it is what somebody else is willing to pay. Just think he would need an offer that is significantly better than what we could offer for him to go. From what I have seen and what I have been told - he has a genuine affection for the club.
Much of the criticism and concern over Jose has been his not being or at least not being used as an all round midfield player which has stifled our ability going forward. It seems CP want to address this and if successful then Semedo could well be a crucial team member next season. He certainly has the heart and ability to make it work. Well done to the manager.

I've told you before, don't call me Shirley.
Slater has only said "significant investment". Nowhere has he said more than the £4m spent last year.
Since the is the overspend for the season and more than most clubs at this level he could, quite legitimately, argue that £4m is significant.
I hope you are right and the budget will increase but I think Large may well be right - for once : - )
.........or another way of looking at this is that he knows that he is off at the end of the season and is doing his bit to get the fans on his side now - It alright coming out now with the big " I'd love to be here forever" but will he still be saying that in June when he is told he won't be on £6k anymore and its likely to be nearer £2k ! No - I don't think so.
1) Possibly, what he actually said is he would sign for Charlton Life.
2) I doubt he will sign if he's offered £2k or £3k per week and can get better elsewhere.
3) A few weeks ago a lot of us were criticising his average performances this season. Suddenly, he scores in front of The Covered End for the first time ever, he scores at The Valley for the first time ever, he scores his 2nd goal for us in 112 starts and he is the messiah.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha
I don't mind him re-signing on the same deal as everyone else, as opposed to being paid 3 times more, but I won't be distraught if he goes.
Many times I've heard people say that we should have a complete clearout, that none of the squad are good enough to take us forward. Some of those include Semedo in this list for the clearout. I cant think of a current player whom nobody thinks we should get rid of, except possibly Chris Solly, and BWP (so far).
So pause and consider this (cos I just spent a few minutes researching it). Eighteen months ago, Norwich City, relegated with us, opened their campaign with a result and performance more disastrous than any we have conjured up this season. They lost 7-1 at home in a local derby against a club they hardly stooped to consider rivals. I would imagine that most die hard Norwich fans would not just have sacked the lot of them, they would have murdered them.
They now stand on the brink of automatic promotion to the Championship. NINE of the players who took part in that humiliation are still part of the squad that has taken them to the brink of promotion to the PL.
Lambert had to decide which of those players were crap, and which were just playing crap. (One of the players he decided was crap was Gary Doherty , BTW) Chris Powell has to do the same. Has he got as many as nine? I doubt it. But for sure Jose is one of the few.
Prague Addick - Norwich had only 3 of last seasons League One winning team in their line-up on Saturday v Scunthorpe - Holt, Martin and Hoolihan. The other 8 are new this season. Lambert has skillfully changed the personnel to produce a promotion challenging team, discarding Spillane, Nelson, Doherty, Drury, Hughes, Russell, Lappin, Johnson, Chris Martin, and losing Forster(recalled from his loan). I assume the other 6 out of the 9 are still there but not in the starting line-up? The point is, he's improved the team with championship quality players.
Chris Martin is injured, another Martin plays for them in defence. Players who are still in the squad 18 months and three transfer windows later have not been 'discarded' have they? Gary Doherty, of course, was discarded, and sadly has proved Lambert to be right, even though on paper with his Prem pedigree and still being much younger than he looks, he ought to have been one to take them forward. You say he has changed the personnel, I say his skills has been to find the basis on which to build. So my point is that Powell will have to 'do a Lambert' and in my opinion Jose is one of the few players who can help him do that.
I hope Semedo stays, we need some stability in the playing squad as well as the management team. If you look at the teams promoted last year and those going for promotion this year, most had settled squads. BWP, Benson, Semedo, Jackson, Wagstaff, Dailly, Racon, Solly and Elliot along with Bessone and Stewart if budget allows could form the nucleus of a promotion squad next season. 4 or 5 additions, mainly amongst the back 5, and we're in business.
I personally don't agree with the "he's not good enough" opinion of some here. In fact i think he'd be much better suited to CCC football than this rubbish division. The problem is, We're in this division and will be next season. I'm one of those who definately want to see him stay and have a pretty good feeling that CP also wants him next season. The wage issue will no doubt play a factor in any decision made by him or the club, but WE NEED players who care about the club and are willing to fight the good fight, and he is definately one of those. Hopefully, with a bit more quality around him next season we will see the real Jose. This man knows what loyalty is (unlike his river dancing ponce of a mate who declared his love for man utd until the mighty madrid came knocking).
As he said in the post-match interview on CATV, CP wants him to become a box-to-box midfielder, not just a DM so hopefully we'll see a more positive approach to his game.
Just a thought, He came to us as a Defender, We converted him into a Defensive midfielder and now Powell wants him to get forward more. Give him another 3 years at the club and he'll be our main striker. ;-)
Re: Docherty Lambert didn't dump him. He played most of the games last season and was in the league one team of the year.
I think Doc has been poor this season but you can't link the 7 - 1 defeat to Doc leaving when he played 43 games under Lambert, scored six goals a won a champions medal subsequently

I have not explained myself clearly. I did not suggest that either I or the Norwich fans exclusively blame Doherty for the 7-1 defeat. I assume that Norwich fans, having witnessed relegation, and then a 7-1 drubbing when they probably expected to win 7-1, decided they were all crap. Lambert has done a great job in identifying a squad nucleus that was not just crap, but capable of operating a division higher. He has retained no less than 9 players involved in that debacle, (but not Doherty) and I find it remarkable how far they have risen from that point. So my point is not about Doherty per se, but that CP has to do the same. There has to be a nucleus of players who can play better than this, and in a division above. Who are they, and how many are there? That is CPs job to find out.I firmly believe that Jose Semedo is one of them. In fact, he's first on my list. Others would be BWP, Solly, Wagstaff, maybe Elliott. I'm not counting loanees, and beyond that list I'm struggling. But then Norwich fans would probably not have kept most of that 9 either after the 7-1. That's what good management is about.
