  • Had time to reflect on yesterday and its good to be able to comment from actually being there. I thought the first 5/6 mins of the first half we dominated them and played some good passing fooball, then for some reason we backed off they came into the game more and seemed to be getting a lot of joy down our left-handside. In fact from where I was sitting (East Stand F block) they had oceans of space, as Bessone seemed to keep backing off. However he did make one great tackle and kept the ball alive and played a great pass down the line to Racon. That said we did seem very 'loose' at the back in that first half, however I'm convinced their goal was offside, McGleish was virtually crouching on the line when he scored and he looked straight at the linesman just to check he didnt have his flag up!! From then until HT the game seemed to take on a 'lets see who can make the most errors' and both tems cancelled each other out.
Second half was a different story, we came out and had a right go, pushing them back from the off. We hassled them when they had the ball, made them make errors, passed the ball around and to be honest I thought played some really good football. Their keeper made some blinding saves, but we thoroughly deserved to win it.
For me Benno and BWP looked good together upfront, Parrett played well in midfield, good vision, hassling and closing down. Racon was just about my MOM over Daily who played a skippers role today and kept the team going forward. I liked the look of Stewart when he came on and what a pass for Jose goal, turned the defender and sat the ball up with a peach of a cross to the far post. Finally I thought Solly and Waggy linked well on the right.
The atmosphere from our fans especially in the second half was more than I was expecting and kept going until the final whistle.
So for my first game in 2 years, and without any previous opinion of actually seing this team play I thought it was a good all round performance. Yes there are deficienies, the defence looked slow and cumbersome at times and were willing to stand off in the first half and give them space to attack. Defending from set-pieces looked poor as well, and why didnt we take the game to them in the first half after the first 5/6 minutes had gone? Questions that are going to have to be addressed and solved if we want a good season next year.
However having said all that, I did like the way we tried the passing and moving game in second half....and boy did it reap benefits.
Oh well back to match thread on Tuesday!!
  • redmidland...you do a sterling job on updates, and I know it is tricky for you to get to matches, so I am delighted that the team won for you, hope you enjoyed the whole day.

Thanks mate......perhaps I should try and get down more often.....could be their 'lucky fan'.......no I dont think so either!!!
  • Couple of things: first, McGleish was not offside.
Yes, he did look straight to the lino, but I was directly in line and Parrett was playing him on.
Second, yes it was great to see Daily confidently driving forward with the ball, but the fact is he was allowed to by Orient playing one up front and not chasing down in our half. Doubt he'll get so many opportunities on Tuesday.

It was great to see us win and especially to see the recent improvement in performance continue.
For once we had the luck on our side; with their disallowed goal at a crucial time and then the gift to BWP.

Team spirit seems high and Stewart looked good in his brief cameo; his part in the last goal was top-drawer.
We already know what a difference BWP and Parrett have made.
Let's hope we can build on this win and get some consistency and momentum.
Will be delighted if CP can prove mugs like me wrong.
    Went home buzzing yesterday
  • McLeish was not offside. Saw it again on TV & Parrett was behind him, playing him on. Not sure how Parrett came to be there, he looked as if he had almost been off the pitch.
  • Does Parrett not act as the last man (goalie) meaning if there were no other CAFC players in front he is off?

I don't know the rules in those situations.
  • To be onside you need 2 defenders to be goalside, one is 99% of the time going to be the goalie.
Elliot & Parrett were goalside of McLeish, so it's a valid goal. IMO.

Could only comment on how I saw it yesterday....not seen it on TV yet, but if it shows that Parrett was playing him on then I was wrong. Parrett must have been standing close to the byline I guess.
  • Ah ok. I thought McGleish was ahead of Elliot.
  • [cite]Posted By: Airman Brown[/cite]Marginally fewer comps than usual yesterday. About 1450 Orient. Good turnout by their standards.

We have a lot of STs not coming. There were very few comps for Southampton and a massive number of paid tickets not used, some of which will have been Dec 26 match tickets that were never refunded.

    Cheers

  • We made a subtle change at half-time, moving Parrett in behind the front 2, in a 4-3-1-2 system. Parrett dictated the pattern of play from a more advanced position and shut down Orient's passing game. The team played 10 yards further up the pitch, the front 2 were less detached and we looked a much better team with everyone joining in.

    Plus we upped the tempo
  • Oh yea of little faith.....
  • Kap 10 - Great point. Dailly was the only one trying to force the issue in the first half. Too much tippy tappy nonsense with no end product.

Just watched it on I-player...and yes Parrett was playing him onside, my mistake.
  • The 1st half was similiar to that of recent performances. There was no creativity, poor body language, overcomplicated passes and hardly any attacking play.
The 2nd half was great to watch and we always looked threatning going forwards. The players showed passion, determination and plenty of energy.

Have to give special mentions to Racon, Semedo & Daily. Thought they were brilliant in the 2nd half & Was great to see Jose score infront of the covered end!
Stewart's cameo appearance looked promising & Hopefully he turns out to be a decent midfielder/leader.

An enjoyable day at The Valley!!
  • I don't know if they have another angle on iPlayer, but from the tv highlights you just can't say. At the point Dean Cox strikes the ball, McGleish, Parrett and Elliot are all out of the frame; it's impossible to tell.

Doesn't parrett standing between McGleish* and the by line also appeal for offside?

*Another Charlton old boy who scores against us and comes back to to haunt us for letting him go ;-)
  • Confidence.

We started well, and then they scored. Heads dropped, no-one calling for much. Off at half time with no-one looking like they wanted to be there on the pitch, booing all over the place so who can blame them.

Get a goal back and whilst the formation seemed to change a bit the biggest chenge took place inside our players.

  • All I can add to above is that in the second half we started to work, move and battle. And then hey presto we got some luck.

Was it Jack Nicklaus who said "the harder I work the luckier I seem to get".
  • Orient mucked up by sitting so deep in the second half, especially having such uncommanding centre halves who struggled to head clear on lots of occasions (the total opposite of Llera and Doc who cleared the lot in the game at Brisbane Road). The gap between McGleish and his midfield was enornmous. Before they introduced their sub striker, we were even leaving ourselves one on one at the back because Orient had retreated so far. Parrett was able to push right up and Bessone/Solly and either Llera or Dailly made the numbers up in midfield. If Orient had planned to sit on 1-0 then they should have subbed McGleish at half time and brought matey on to give them something to aim at. They ballsed it tactically (the players could be as much to blame as the manager) and we took full advantage.

Agree, I feel that if they had gone for a second goal in the first half they would have got it.

I can not particularly pick out anybody or any incident from our defenders but we look shaky. Almost a case of the whole being lesser than the sum of the parts.
  • Nice to see us score some goals!! Thought Benson has a decent game, gave 100% which is all you can ask for and got his goal. Solly continues to impress me. For a little guy he dosen't back out of challenges and is strong on the ball. Needs some work going forward but I think that will come, seems to have more of an understanding with Waggy then Francis and most importantly he dosen't make many mistakes. Happy to see him wearing No2 next year. Stewart done well when he came on. Great ball for 3rd goal. Finally a decent cross right to the back post! Seemed to be making himself known out there giving out instructions and putting himself about the pitch which was good to see our midfield is missing a bit of a "midfield general" happy with the 3 points. Let's try and carry the form from the 2nd half into the game on Tuesday.
  • Was that the first time Benson and BWP have started a game?
  • i think so, not sure though
  • [cite]Posted By: AshTray[/cite]Was that the first time Benson and BWP have started a game?
2nd time. The first was at home to Tranmere. We drew 1-1, BWP getting our goal.
  • Simonsen and Tutt-Tutt have called it right IMHO

Os were shakey at the back all game and when we pushed up on them we created chances ie Bensons close ramge headed from an excellent Parrett free kick and the non-foul on the keeper when he went walk about.

Solly and waggy are a real team on the right, Bessone strong in tackle, racon lively and Benson intelligent.

Thougth Parrett was good on the ball but less so off it first half but when pushed up the field was way more effective. He's young and learning but I like him more every game. Semedo strong and deadly finish from a yard out. Hard to judge but Stewart looked useful and neat on the ball.

Was most impressed by BWP. Not just his goal and assist but for his link up play and closing down.

But poor 1st half as a team still it shows that these players (and coaches) are not all useless or have given up. There is talent and heart there.

Don't get too down with the downs or too up with the ups. It's only one long awaited win but a win all the same.

    Keep the Faith
  • Is it fair to say that Wagstaff look better as a pair than each would individually? I know Wagstaff has detractors and there are obviously still things Solly needs to improve (purely because he is not experienced enough yet) but they seem to have a good understanding of each other. That's the kind of thing that will boost spirit and come in very useful next year.
  • I think Solly and Waggy link up well and we look a whole lot stronger down the right since Solly has been in the team. Perhaps Waggy feels he can press forward more knowing Solly is behind him i.e making more chances having more shots which can only be good for the team right? I've heard from sources that they are good friends off the pitch as well which I believe can also make a difference..
