+++++Letter from Mr Slater+++++

  • Thanks Clem for retyping the letter. Those of us that are not season ticket holders, for whatever reason, currently would not know about letter.
I think it is good to see that Mr Slater understands that he needs to send a message that things are going to change and, hopefully, for the better. Quite clearly there is a medium to long term business plan, based on Charlton getting out of this pony league and pushing upwards again, hence Jeff Vetre coming back and now this letter confirming that CP will be given funds to buy players that I guess will be able to play attractive football but also strong enough to get us through cold, wet and windy nights at Carlise etc.
Perhaps I'm being naive (sp?) but surely some members of the current squad would want to be part of a new and exciting era at the club and be playing for a new contract? Lets see what happens tonight and on Saturday.

As others have said it's as clearer statement of intent to the squad as you can get and the board will be judged against this in the future.

Rightly or wrongly the players would have known this some time ago, perhaps in the hope that they would respond in a positive way, and there's no doubt in my mind that we have a bunch of players all thinking about where to go on their summer hol's and their next move and not the job in hand.
  • "We are conscious that until very recently the club was locked in a spiral of decline following relegation from the Premier League in 2007 and fans like you have shown extraordinary loyalty over that period. I can well understand if your patience is stretched to breaking point."

When was this "recently" he talks about where we halted the spiral of decline? I think our continued fall through the league would suggest we are still very much in that spiral.
  • Am extremely disappointed that Mr. Slater has not written a similar letter, outlining the Club's future plans, to five year season ticket holders.

Exactly. That '...until very recently....' comment makes it very difficult for me to take the rest of the letter seriously. Obviously he would say he is talking about things off the pitch. And we have to believe that decline has been halted. But, clearly, since the new owners came in the 'spiral of decline' on the pitch has accelerated!
  • Perhaps Mr Slater needs to "Pop" this letter thru all the lapsed season ticket holders letterboxes.

He's visiting you all in person. You must have been on the toilet when he knocked on your door.
  • 2 questions:

why buy a striker when goals werent a problem, rather than the obvious to anyone with eyes weaknesses in central midfield and central defence?

if the squad was so pish, why sack the manager who worked wonders with said pish

    (apologies if already said above)

  • I class myself as a cynic but compared to some on this board I am a gullible nincompoop. Until Champions League football is at The Valley I doubt many of you could see something positive if it came along and stuck it's fingers up your nose.
  • When the league's top scorer is available at a knockdown price then you go for it whether you need him or not. I think the attack did need boosting but we also needed other areas addressed as a higher priority. The club did try to address using the loan system but as has beenn reported they couldn't get their targets.

  • All I'm gonna say the outline of this letter is what I heard late yesterday, they are backing Powell until the end of the season, a clear out is gonna happen but with a bit more detail, big surprises in the summer!! I guess we all knew that anyway.

I'm tired of fans who were openly critical of Parky now rewriting history. "Worked wonders" yet not enough back in October for you to be suggesting he should go by Xmas!! Whjats more you were suggesting giving him 2 games and then appointing Kinsella. You now criticisee CP for lack of experience. The posts are there from mid October (unless you now choose to edit/delete them!!)

Not just aimed at you Razil, but it seems there are a lot of posters who are qucik to rewrite their own personal view of Parky.
  • why would anyone bother buying a football club with all the unneccessary agg that goes with it
whatever you say or do ,now with the help of the internet, you have a load of old women(men) whinging /moaning / bitching about every little thing

if i was them i'd tell all the moaners we're off out of this wank business enjoy liquidation you mugs

but on a more serious note as WSS has pointed out what will they do if it continues to go tits up
  • they will try to offload it to some other mug - there always seem to be a good number in football. Of course the tax laws can actually make it pretty neutral to own a loss making football club and it gives you a bit of cred and exposure.

Do you really think he gives a piss about what a bunch of keyboard warriors think?

    Teehee!

Of the 14 out-of-contract-in-the-Summer players, I believe 6 are young/Academy products, none of whom one would expect to be included in the automatic clearout? That leaves 8, far fewer than left in Summer 2010. How many other players, with perhaps a year or two left on their contracts, do you think will be chucked out with the bathwater?
  • I doubt anyone other than BWP is safe tbh.

    feel free to criticise,

I am not saying he [parky] didn't need replacing or criticising, I simply refer to the letter - the boards own view that the squad was poor - in which case why sack the manager who scraped it together from nothing?

I am not sure if I ever called for Parkys sacking tho, but I did show deep reservations at bringing in an inexperienced hand, as a rule of thumb I would argue only let someone go if you have someone better to replace them

I have to say that I think Razil (and Chizz if memory serves) were both strong supporters of not sacking Parky.

In so much as I'm sure I remember them being on the other side of an argument with me about it!

  • Clem thankyou for posting this , i am however disgusted with our new chairmen that they have ignored me and not sent me a letter , they have however sent one to my wife, MY Wife! i think they should all resign immediately.
  • Talk is cheap.

How viable is the business in the 4th division?

No. But he does care what the current season ticket holders think.

Despite the fact they we were told many times by Richard Murray that the £2m raised from season ticket sales is a drop in the ocean compared to the club's running costs, it is £2m more than they would have if we all chose to not renew.

It also guarantees the income in the event that the games become a lot less appealing. At the risk of getting a kicking from the obsessives on the forum, I seriously doubt that all of the current season ticket holders would be planning on going tonight (or for the rest of the season) if they had to pay upwards of £20 a ticket.

I spoke to a Chesterfield fan this morning , they are running away with League 2 at the moment , he can't wait to come to the valley next season , although i said to him we are in free fall at the moment , and could be trading places , they have had their manager 2 years now ( John Sheridan) who when he took over he cleared out the playing squad of overpaid players , who were not 'hungry' for the shirt , got a torrent of abuse at the time from the fans as results were pants and they missed out on the playoffs when they were expected to make them and get promoted , they have a nice new shiny ground 10,500 , and things are on the up for them , but more importantly they changed the way they play and have achieved success by playing along the ground , and the fans are really happy , it can be done people ...believe!!

This guy has been to 112 different grounds it became a passion visiting grounds with his dad ( basically the whole football league, he's only 27 years old) and has seen lots of different teams , so he's not a carrot cruncher from a lesser light club that hasn't got a scooby about other teams.
  • I was disappointed. I thought he was going to ask me to bring my boots along tonight.
  • I only read the first page of responses but it backs up what most of what I had thought.

    The squad is shit
We have players an agents looking for deals and when they are non forthcoming they are sulking

but don't you realise that's why they are 3rd division Footballers because they do not and can not apply themselves consistently and in a professional manor consistently

The issue may be Scp but we don't know that the shite talk has come far to quick even I gave Parkinson a full season with his players well nearly but not 11 games

Slater is right stick with it or don't but like he says take pride in being a charlton fan yes its tough right now but the right noises are coming out from within its just that some don't want to listen

More importantly he cares what they spend.

StillAddickted, The VIPs have an elected rep as you know. Email him on craig_cafc_vip@yahoo.co.uk and tell him what you think. I'm not disgusted but he and the Club should remember those that have already put their money down.

    Southend/Ketman,

I kind of agree but I think you are being a bit harsh. Surprised especially by what Ketman says as you have always been a strong advocate of Varney. But a valid view you are both quite entitled to hold.

I said myself the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. Yes, he needs to back up his words with actions but he can't do that straight away. At the moment he is saying the right thing and promising what we want ie "significant" investment.

My question is does "significant" mean more than the £4m budget we spent in this current season and if so how much more.

Ultimately the letter is designed to get season ticket holders to renew, so not sending this letter to 5 year st holders and non st holders makes sense to me. Guessing something else is on route to people in those categories.

Don't need to send anything to people with the 5-year tickets, no more money to be made out of them for the time being.
