Film recommendation

On the flight back from Oz I watched a film called 'Moon', based on a recommendation from my brother. I enjoyed it, and got round to watching it again tonight. On second viewing it gets even better. Great film - if you haven't seen it (and can watch a film that doesn't have explosions, guns and mayhem in it without falling asleep) I highly recommend it.

Eerily reminiscent of Solaris and 2001 - if you enjoyed either of those, you'll love it. Also reminds me, stylistically, of Silent Running (another criminally underrated film)
  • Yeah it's a brilliant film, Sam Rockwell is a great actor.

Yeah liked them both. Must sit down and watch it.
  • Excellent film. £5 in HMV.
  • Black Swan
  • Moon is a fine film - directed by David Bowies son. Sam Rockwell is an underated actor who hasnt had that breakout role yet. Solaris i found to be a bit sluggish. 2001 is a classic.
  • I saw it last year and really enjoyed it. Rockwell's best performance yet.

Saw Black Swan last week. Pretentious rubbish and one of the most overrated films i have seen in a very long time.

It amazes me how so many films that are completely confusing and have no definitive understandable story are raved about. The Matrix , Fight club , The fountain and Eternal sunshine of the Spotless mind are all films i hated for that very same reason.
  • Thought Moon was excellent - but do watch it when you aren't tired/ hungover, as it is deliberately very slow-paced. Watched it last Christmas, and a couple of family members couldn't stay awake....

I really do think that more and more films these days are specifically made to win awards rather than to entertain.

"Hey let's tackle a difficult subject" I mean, how could anyone be ENTERTAINED by Brokeback Mountain ?

I take it you don't enjoy films that have something to say.
  • Sky+ "Moon" yesterday afternoon....

    Don't tell Me the ending...........

Oh really? Thanks for that lazy sweeping statement. If your so clever then tell me what Black Swan had to say then because i'm buggered if i know.

In what way is Fight Club difficult to understand?. How does it not have a story line?.

    I enjoyed it
  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I enjoyed that one as well

Likewise. Thought the plot was pretty clear in that one as well. Added bonus of Winslet looking like she would take a length....

  • Thought every single one of the films Beds has mentioned above were ridiculously easy to understand.

Black Swan (if you don't get this, then you should stick to Gulliver's Travels - won't spoil it for anyone who is planning on seeing it. Excellent film BTW)
The Matrix (reality is a construct invented by artificial intelligence to keep humankind compliant as they exist only as a power source for the AI)
Fight Club (Tyler Durden is the narrator)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (Girlfriend's memory has been erased. Boyfriend undergoes procedure to erase his memory too - only to decide he doesn't want to forget her, having spent years working on their relationship)
The Fountain (this is the most difficult of the list - and there are several different possible interpretations. The 'cleverest' of the films listed as it 'works' on various different 'levels')

There are some films out there that are deliberately 'difficult' and all the more shit for it. None of those lifted above even remotely qualify as 'wilfully obtuse'
  • another film of those types is jacobs ladder , I have watched it tons of times and love it but still not quite sure of what is happening.

I liked Moon very much , Sam Rockwell is a very underated actor.

Just finished watching black swan , very very dark and I can imagine it not being to many peoples taste but I enjoyed it.

If you can take subtitle films then "a prophet" is a blinding film about a young french arab who gets put in prison in paris and gets taken under the wing of some corsicans who are up against a group of muslims.

Well Mr Ambrose , if they are all that easy to explain how come you only managed to explain only one of them , vaguely (Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind) . I'm not buying what you wrote for The Matrix. That explanation might as well be in japanese and pretty much sums up what i mean.

    Explain it then

So go ahead , explain it for me.
  • They've all been explained, in my post above. I'm not quite sure how much easier to break The Matrix down for you. Maybe if I had some Lego I could do a reconstruction and post it on YouTube? As for Fight Club - the Narrator is Edward Norton's character - you never find out his name - and Tyler Durden is his alter ego. He spends the film battling against him, and finally gets rid of him just as the world starts burning around him. Seriously - none of these films are difficult. None of them.
  • please explain Jacobs Ladder then leroy ?

    cheers in advance
  • And The Fountain
