[cite]Posted By: East Kent Addick[/cite]Thought Peter Garland would be a ledge as well.if only he could lose some weight saw him playing non league about 5 years ago looked about 20 stone but still bossed the midfield
[cite]Posted By: Weegie Addick[/cite]Agree entirely on Tydeman
I was going to mention him. My Dad always thought he was decent for us but I couldn't see it. I have a problem with players who can't head the ball for toffees. In that sense Tydeman was like Rommedahl. Header bottlers both of them. That really used to wind me up!
[cite]Posted By: East Kent Addick[/cite]David Whyte for one season he was superb 20 goals
Yep, he's a good shout as well. I really thought we snared a real gem. Have you read some of the bits Gary Nelson wrote about him? Clearly Whyte was a bit of a space cadet.

In Nelse's book, "Left Foot Forward".......?
Terrific read for every Charlton supporter.
I am in contact with Gary on twitter from time to time. Great bloke and for me, another Charlton legend. He was one of the band of players that gradually turned our club around during Curbs/Grittys early days and helped build the platform for what came later.
McLeod after seeing his goals for MK Dons, thought he would score bundles. Varney likewise after his Crewe spell Rommedahl after watching him in 2002 tear France apart at WC. Hasselbaink obviously
Rommedahl by a mile for me. I really (naively) thought that was it, we'd established ourselves as a big club. But he achieved nothing with us and a few years later we find ourselves in Div 3.
1. Neil Redfern 2. Rommeldahl 3. Ambrose 4. Luke Varney 5. Leroy Lita 6. Andy Gray 7. Karim Bagaheri 8. Mo-ta-kill 9. Nicky Bailey 10. Jason Euell
In no order! Euell did well for us but didn't reach legend status like I was hoping for.
Don't understand the criticism of Gregg Shields at all, he was a decent replacement for Mills and a nice guy as well. Injury ended his time with us and I always keep an eye out for him north of the border.
Andy Jones was a bit like Luke Varney...he had his good moments but not enough of them. Wish we'd managed to keep him when we went down because I think he would have got plenty of goals in Div 2 (thought his heading was particularly useful). I asked John Humphrey what he thought of Andy Jones not long after we'd signed him from Port Vale and his opinion was that he wasn't going to be quite good enough. I guess he was proved right.
Greg Shields did well in a good side. Very similar to Frazer Richardson...quick and pretty good on the ball but slightly suspect when defending. Shields did have a much better shot than Richardson though....remember Nottingham Forest 3-0 at home?....proper piledriver. Plus a well taken winner v Birmingham.
Jones was one that didn't quite do it, Shields was fine.
Paulo Di-Canio. He was heading for legend status before getting the dream move back to his childhood club. A real shame.
Darren Bent. If only we could have kept him.
Andy Reid. Sold just when we needed him most.
Rommedahl. The biggest of the biggest disappointments.
Jerome Thomas. Started so well but lost his way.
As for Chris Dickinson? WT... He was plucked from a lower non-league a should have stayed there. He was never even legend potential. A complete waste of the money we spent on his over inflated salary.
Not a legend but thought Mark Debolla would be a really good player for us, this was based on his two goals at Welling in the 5-1 2002 Welling friendly. I know "only Welling" but his goals were very good and honestly thought he would be next big thing.
I was very dissapointed in Rommedahl, he was doing the business before he came to us and continued doing it afterwards.
Alan Simonsen, he was just too good for the team at the time. I remember seeing him put some passes through into a space where a striker should have run, only for the opposing defence to easily pick up the ball because no Charlton striker had thought to run into the space.
Darren Ambrose - he had long enough and plenty of chances, to be fair he had a few good matches here and there - but these were usually followed by games where he disapointed or more often simply disappeared.
I was desperate for rommedahl to do well, was a pretty big name at the time and people were impressed that we managed to get hold of him. After the palace goal i was convinced he'd get a big wave of confidence and do brilliantly. Never happened.
Scott Parker leaving felt like your girlfriend leaving you. I felt absolutely gutted and betrayed at the time, as he was my favourite player and i was still pretty young then.
Shaun Bartlett - only showed his true potential when initially on loan and towards the end of his 4 year deal - when looking for a new one - could/should have been massive

Shame. Deprived you of a top notch career. I'm sure Bertie Mee would have spotted you - and you would have won silverware at Arsenal.
Then a regular for England during the late 70s.
Success or failure can be a fine line, you know.

Reckon Andy Jones is probably the winner so far. Although Rohmedal is probably giving him a run for his money!
