Signing for the Addicks you thought would become Valley Legends but never did

I had high hopes for Yassin Moutaouakil and Chris Dickson.

  • Dennis Rommedahl. Legend for the Palace goal, just not quite how I hoped it would be the rest of the time.
  • Danny Murphy
    JFH
    Dennis Rommedahl
    Lloyd Sam
    etc...

Hasselbaink definitely. Thought he and Benty were going to make an excellent pair.
  • Omar Pouso a rare South American purchase.
  • Ralph Milne was a great disapointment - Yes Chris Dickson seemed to have something about him too.
  • Jimmy Fat Piggybank. Was so excited when we signed him - a real star name, and player I'd admired. How embarrassing is it to admit that now?!!

Martin Pringle after he ran his proverbials off, was very quick and scored the equiliser against newcastle.
  • Thought Chris Dickson was going to be our Ian Wright. Also thought Youga and Moutou would be playing for France and Arsenal by now.

Good job im not a scout.
  • Bent was the only signing in recent times that i actually have considered as "legend" potenial.
Just a shame he didn't sign 3 even 4 years sooner.
Could have been that missing factor in our push for Europe.
A solid team turned out for us in every prem season (not the last season) and that type of goalscorer really would mix well with the teams we used to churn out.
JJ, Bartlett,Svensson etc all did very well, but an out and out goalscorer would have been crucial to us pushing on that little bit more.

Saw him in the pre-season games and thought bloody hell, this guy is awesome.

Not at all embarrassing. His record was superb - he'd always scored more than 10 goals a season prior to joining us. Mrs Lout (who is very clever) did say at the time (when I was jumping up and down in delight) that we'd got the wrong guy from 'Boro - it was Viduka that had terrorised our defence in the cup not Jimmy.
  • Barry Endean...Biggest disappointment EVER
    Mike Small...Nuff said
Alan Dugdale...Looked world class in his first match
  • I'd be tempted to put Ambrose in there too. After his first ever goal for us ('that' strike against Man United) there was that glimpse of hope.
  • A player wouldn't be a Legend if they were regular occurances
  • I remember being really excited when we signed Neil Redfern but he just never managed it, probably due to being homesick, although I’m sure if Charlton Life had existed in those day’s we would have come up with some other ludicrous reason for his poor form.

Matty Holmes could have been up there if it wasn’t for that shocking injury, what a shame.
  • Andy Jones
  • Dave Madden (not Lawrie) got him from Arsenal, on a free I think, thought he was a really talented midfielder, I remember when we played Spurs in the FA Cup in 85, he dominated their midfield, a midfield which included Hoddle, I remember Hoddle getting so frustrated that he tried to take Madden out the game, I believe he married an American girl and went to live and play out there. I'm sure if he'd had stayed, he would have been a Charlton legend.
  • M Bent
    Pringle
    Jeffers
    Piggy bank
    Rommedahl
  • Pringle
    Jeffers
    Bagheri
    JFH
    Rommers
    Redfearn
    Akpo
Bradley Allen, I was convinced would be league top scorer - started well to be fair.
  • Cory Gibbs
    Francis Jeffers
Talal El Karkouri (i really liked this bloke, but he never lived up to his full potential at CAFC)
Kevin Lisbie (his time came for him to depart, but some glimpses of briallance from this guy before he left..)

Sorry - I thought it said B*ll End.
  • David Whyte after playing a few games on loan for us while we were at Upton Park came back to Charlton afew seasons later.Played really outstanding football for 18months scoring lots of goals then .........could not hit abarn door.Overall total waste of a brilliant player.
  • Andy Jones without a question!!

We were at the bare bones then we found 300k from somewhere to sign Jones from Port Vale!

He banged dozens of goals for Vale so he was going to be the next CHARLTON LEGEND......I'LL GET MY COAT!
  • Got to be Fat Eddie Murphy.

Must admit that i was underwhelmed by JFH at the time. thought his best yrs had gone and he went on to prove me right. The one that stands out for me was shuan Bartlett. Early indications were that he was going to rip the premiership apart (as he did against man utd at the valley) but never seemed to live up to it after that. Don't think he was bad, just hoped for more.
  • Andy Jones is mine also.
  • Vigo Jacobsen and Johnny Ostergaard. The latter was a Danish International however it later turned out that this was as an Ice Hockey player.
