[cite]Posted By: Terry Naylor[/cite]Andy Jones without a question!!
We were at the bare bones then we found 300k from somewhere to sign Jones from Port Vale!
He banged dozens of goals for Vale so he was going to be the next CHARLTON LEGEND......I'LL GET MY COAT!
Andy Jones-boyo! I still cannot to this day forget or work out how he, from 2 yards out in the centre of goal, managed to slice the ball into Sainsbury's car park at Selhurst vs Liverpool!
I remember everyone jumped up as he pulled his foot back and then sat down again quickly, like some bizarre Mexican Wave!!
You could here the whole stadium (at once) clearly say: What the F was that! Like when they say handball!
Not a signing as such but The Ven Nguyen, or whatever his name was, received a lot of hype and I didn't take it with the usual liberal dose of salt for some reason!

Yup. Me and my two sons still talk about that one as the worst miss we have probably ever seen.
The funniest thing was the look on Jones's face. He fell over and ended up sat on his arse and as he looked round you could see what was in his mind. The look on his face wasn't disappointment or embarrasmment or anything else. It was the same reaction as everyone else in the crowd : ''How the f...?''
Must have it on video somewhere. Worth looking out, I think...
ps: on the other hand, when my youngest son was mascot v Portsmouth on Dec 26, 1987, Jonesy paid him back handsomely. In the match programme the lad named Jones as his favourite player - and he then went and scored after 19 seconds - the fastest goal of the season, I think. The irony was my lad missed the goal he claims to this day to have inspired, because he was still being escorted from pitch side to his seat with us by Jackie or Eve from the Junior Reds!
Luke Varney, was knocking in goals for fun at Crewe, thought he was gonna run riot in the championship with the team we had but never really got going for him, possibly down to the way he was played more than anything else, quite a shame.
David Whyte for one season he was superb 20 goals in a struggling team then Alan C takes full control and then he loses form and his place and is non league within a year or so massive waste of talent Thought Peter Garland would be a ledge as well.if only he could lose some weight saw him playing non league about 5 years ago looked about 20 stone but still bossed the midfield
One for the oldies I expected a lot more from Dick Tydeman who was a ledge at the Gills but did nothing for us except prance around avoiding the ball
Andy jones as well, think he hit 40 odd goals at port vale, remember i think 5 in one game, did score a blinder against spurs tho at selhurst from outside the box!
Very harsh those mentioning Greg Shields, he did well and then had a row with Curbs and never got another look-in, there is not much he could have done about that.
[cite]Posted By: Leroy Ambrose[/cite]Milne. I was so excited when we signed him. Unfortunately he was a lazy fat piss-artist ginger twat.
Ralph had many faults Leroy but being ginger was not one of them!

I didn't think that there was anything wrong with the way Greg Shields played, far from it, I thought he was really useful. It's just that I thought he would go on to be a legend when he signed but he didn't.

From what I remember Shields was unhappy about not getting picked after coming back from injury in the first year back in the Premiership with Curbs playing Kish or Fish there instead of him.
I agree, he was brilliant in the CCC winning season and thought he was the next Johnny H, but it did not happen like that.

No 1, top of the heap, the crowning turd in the water pipe - Rommedahl by a country mile
But it wasn't just me, one top football pundit (name escapes me) called him the best signing of the Summer transfer window.
No 2 Bougherra - because we just didn't get the best out of him and then he was sold at a time when we really needed him
No 3 Leroy Lita - I really thought he was a coup, a Premiership level striker yet he was unfit and then not sharp
No 4 Scott Sinclair - Chelsea wonderkid with a big reputation and flash football boots, yet he was as effective as a chocolate teapot.
Going further back
1. Greg Shields - in like a lion and out like a lamb
2. Andy Jones - the 20 goals a season striker we craved - not
For Older Lifers
1. Barry Endean - Total pants
2. Maurice Setters - Well past his prime
I was going to say Greg Shields. There seemed to be something about him but he just disappeared back up to Scotland.
John Barnes - had been a legend but wasn't with us.

I thought that was a massive coup at the time. Then came the roast allegations and then it turned out he was actually gash
Cory Gibbs of course!

Bit unfair on Greg Shields - my recollection is that he was v good, then had a bad injury and was never the same again.
Just realised no-one has mentioned Zheng Zhi. Now there's one who flattered to deceive...
Joe McLaughlin (because of the fee)
Clive Mendonca
Danny Murphy
Francis Jeffers
Jorge Costa - even though it was only a loan
In my opinion only Mendonca and Costa were the only two in that list that became legends, all be it that Murphy delivered on the pitch.
My Dad was then approached by Palace for me to go there and he said no - good old Dad, Charlton through and through!
Ralph had many faults Leroy but being ginger was not one of them!

My biggest flops would be Andy Jones, Denis Rommedahl and Bradley Allen.
For that, you and your dad will always be legends to me, Al!
