What is acceptable target this season?

edited January 2011 in General Charlton
Now that parkie has gone and we expect money in, what is the minimum we should be expecting from the board?

1. Play Off Place
2. Promotion through play offs
3. Automatic
4. Champions

For me it is 2.

Your answer should not be "depends" but based upon your expectations now.

    grrrrrrr ;-)
  • 2 or 3
    Promotion

This isn't what I expect to happen, but it's the only acceptable target as far as I'm concerned, since we sacked our manager in 5th position
  • same as it was with pary - promo thru the play offs
  • Anything less than promotion now will be deemed a failure!
  • Promotion however it happens
  • As long as we play decent football results don't matter otherwise there was no need to sack Parky surely?
  • Depends.

    ;o)

PS: I've followed Charlton too long to have any expectations.
  • For the players to show a bit of passion and spirit would do me.

  • The way some people are carrying on, Premiership :-)
  • Promotion of any form, i fear we may be screwed if we don't achieve it this season.

Poyet in and up as Champions

(Poyet in will ruin Brighton, Howe to Palace will ruin Ballmouth).

Just need to find a way to get Adkins away from Southampton
  • promotion dont care how as long as we get out of this shite league.
  • Seeing as Parky was sacked when we were 5th and in a play-off place, it has to be 3 or 4 surely.
  • promotion however we achieve this

    this
  • There is another option, Kap.

How reasonable is it to expect any new manager to build a team, between now and the end of the season, which not only gains promotion, but which will form the basis of a half-decent side which will stay in the Championship and do well at that level? After all, what's the point of getting promoted if you simply get relegated straight away.

Whether the current squad is or was ever going to be good enough to get promotion under Parkinson, one thing is clear to many of us ... it doesn't have the nucleus of a sustainable Championship level side. Parkinson's strategy was to try to get us out of League 1, then address the issue of staying in the Championship. The more strategic view would be to build a side capable of competing at Championship level, such that promotion out of League 1 sort of takes care of itself.

So, maybe the option missing from your list is this:

Give the new manager 15 months to get us out of League 1, but also with the nucleus of a sustainable Championship side. If promotion happens to be secured this season, that's great. But everything will be geared to achieving promotion by the end of the 2011-12 season with a squad that will need minimal additions to sustain a decent Championship campaign.

    That gets my vote.
  • Dave, you think just staying in League 1 is acceptable this season?
  • I think it has to be 1.

Promotion is the minimum we can really accept, but top two is asking a lot, and once you get into the playoffs it really is a bit of a lottery. As exciting as it is to have a whole season's work decided in one game, it is unrealistic to put the minimum acceptable achievement on one game, and that's what it comes down to if you get to the Playoff Final.

I agree with AFKA though, I'm not sure that the new owners are going to find it easy to raise their enthusiam in the summer if they find themselves facing another season in this horrible, horrible division.

  • 2 or 3 is a must!
  • So Parky gets sacked for not building a league 1 promotion team on little or no money but the new manager, with money, gets 15 months? Bizarre.
  • In view of recent circumstances there is only one option this season: promotion.
  • Promotion (whichever way) followed by top 6 in the championship next season - sounds reasonable for 15 months!

Sorry!! The taxi has just arrived!!!!
  • [cite]Posted By: WSS[/cite]Dave, you think just staying in League 1 is acceptable this season?

I think the longer term plan is better than getting promotion this season, only to come straight back down.

If we are in League 1 two years from now that will be unacceptable.

Henry ... I think you'll find that Parkinson had over two years. And does the new man have money? If so, how much?

    £2.2m including vat

I don't know of course but if he's got no money how is he meant to build a championship side as well as get promoted.

Whoever the manager is his job is to get us at least into the play-offs. If we go up he can worry about a Championship standard team then. Great to get players who can play a role in both tasks if possible but let's cross the championship bridge when we get to it.
  • I put £25 on us to go up as champions on Paddy Power last night at 10-1. Easy money...

Parky had time with little or no money. The new man has no time with plenty of money.

    Both eaqually challenging
