Big Ron got the sack partly because results were poor, but mostly because fans stayed away and the attendance fell below the magic number - from memory it was 40K, of course the two things were related. But once attenadance figures fell below that number the Edwards meat packing clan stopped making their profit figures and the manager was on thin ice.
Man U at that time spent money not to win trophies, but to keep themselves there or there abouts, anything extra was a bonus. When Fergie won the championship in 92/3 it was the first time since the mid-sixties.

Ah, there was only 14,000 at The Valley versus Swindon.
The attendance fell below the magic number.
I don't think for one second that Parky isn't a decent bloke and an extremely diligent worker. I suspect that he retained his position at Charlton because of it despite managing through the worst run in the clubs history, relegation and failure to see us bounce back at the first attempt.
We all know that in recent times he has had little if anything to spend yet..........
The team he has produced is very average. The games I have seen this season have been marked by dithering ponderous one dimensional play and insecure defensive work. He has to bear some of the blame for that.
Whilst I regret the new owners saying only days ago that they were going to work with him, the sacking does have an air of inevitability about it.
I wish Parky, Kins and Breacker well and hope they find a club soon. I am sure they will.

Nothing to do with performance, then?
;o)[/quote]
As I say the two things are related - poor form tends to lead to poor attendances.
[quote][cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite][quote][cite]Posted By: bibble[/cite]I expect Parky to turn up at the Valley in the future as boss of non league or league two Port-Crew-Burton Town and beat us in a cup. Its what happens, but he is a shite manager.[/quote]
But, by your own definition, Bibble ..... wouldn't that make the new Charlton boss a shite manager?[/quote]

Don't forget that some of those "empty" seats were already paid for by season ticket holders who for one reason or another chose to stay away. Didn't look good to TV audience though.
he got lucky with elliots injury that brought randolph in as we were wobbling last season and that definitely helped us make the play offs
he also go lucky with the injury to reid and the emergemce of jackson at left midfield and improvement in form of the side due to this
admittedly i would have called one of them right a lot earlier and not the other
still a decent bloke right to the end even in his statement - very dignified, would happily buy him a pint and have a chat in a pub, but I'm glad he ain't our manager anymore.
Good character and loyalty do not make a good manager! None of the comments in the original posting address the fact that he cannot seem to achieve a winning run of more than a few games, and has failed to achieve most of what was asked of him on appointment. His best is not good enough, no matter how nice he is.
As well-mannered, professional and charming as always but as fatkit says he looks tired and hurt. Think it might be a bit soon for Sky to be picking up the phone but I suppose that's what they do.
Not sure about that VP. A lot of people on the outside will recognise that he got decent results at Charlton in League 1 while continually having to cut the playing budget. Sure he'll get a job in League 1/2 (or a no 2 job higher up) before too long.
Hope he does well wherever he ends up (except when he's playing us)
[cite]Posted By: Valiantphil[/cite]Ask yourself what sort of footy job he will get next - based on his record with us and before that.
The answer starts with a blue square !
There's no need to be unnecessarily vindictive like that. He always gave 100% and is a consummate professional. I'll always forgive someone for being below expectation if they tick both those boxes.
Fact is when he was sacked we were in play off position only a few points off automatic promotion - for most smaller clubs in Lge 1 (apart from Peterborough) he would be seen as doing a very decent job. Don't forget that he got us to the play-offs last year with no transfer budget after trimming the squad and had to trim the squad further this year - I think plenty of Lge 1 or 2 clubs would have him as manager and without the high expectations of a club with our gates and aspirations will no doubt be a success and I say thanks Phil and all the best in your new job.
I would not be suprised at all for our new manager to give Phil a call at some point next week to ask about a couple of things, and do you know what? I reckon Phil will help Chris out as much as he kind.
He's a decent bloke and I wish him all the best. I still disagree with the decision but would I swap it for the elation I'm feeling now? No chance.
[cite]Posted By: Saga Lout[/cite]I agree with SPA. Mark Bright on London Tonight seemed mystified that Charlton had got rid when we were sitting pretty in 5th spot.
I can see Parkinson getting a very good job - I predict he'll be out of work for a lot shorter period than Curbs.
He could be in Colchester to meet the Bournemouth chairman?

Disgrace, Phil did alot for us even paying Gary Barrowdales wages while on loan from his own pocket. If Sir Chris goes on to do anything with us it will be becasue of the foundations parky set not despite.

I'm not picking on Parky, just being realistic. Parky is a decent guy i'm sure - but unremarkable.
Last week Megson turned down a 2+ year deal with the Tractors at £500k a year.
Then there is all that Martin Allen type clan knocking about.
Parky's record is nothing special.

Parky made a short-term interest free loan of a couple of grand to the club that has since been repaid, and anything he achieved were on the foundations of Pardew, so it's swings and roundabouts.
The Borrowdale thing was a noble gesture but nothing to do with his next managerial appointment - unless he is going to pay the wages.
Anyone ever wonder about that short stay at Hull City ?

Embarrassing.
Out of interest what did he say? I presume he's pundit for the Bournemouth game?
All this.............
