[cite]Posted By: theadmiral[/cite]In answer to DRF - I don't imagine for one minute that the players are pausing to try hear what the fans are singing. For most of the time, the fans were focused on the action and I'm sure that by having a lot of noise at the away end, the players are glad to be hearing something. OK it may seem like just noise, but better than twiddling your thumbs and whispering to yourself "good pass" "nice header" etc.
Even though I'm 58, I'm not an old geeser. I'm young in my outlook, young at heart etc. Just as able to have a shout and enjoy myself as any of the youngsters in the crowd. At least they're not going around the street bashing people about!!
If you weren't at the match then you can't moan at us that were there and giving the lads great support.
Not sure if that last line was aimed at me as I thought earlier comments made it pretty clear I was there?
But anyway I don't want silence - I want support. This isn't about one thing or the other, silence or constant noise. Its about rallying the players to perform well not obvisouly ignoring them and making your own fun.
Its funny that whenever the team are playing badly fans come on and thell everyone that the are the 12th man and to support them, but when the singers are critisiced they say the players are really listening anyway.
And my final word on the subject. The female steward wasn't fat, she was wearing a thick puffy coat.
[cite]Posted By: jazzyjazzyjazzy[/cite]I know, i know, i know they was being rude and going mental just for the sake of it, and not paying much attention to what was happening on the pitch, but if that don't happen again then id rather have these moronic fans (as you call them) at the charlton games, because they made it loud and loud is fun (when done correctly)
Join a choir. There you can sing your little heart out, have lots of fun and not have to pretend to be the slightest bit interested in football.
[cite]Posted By: ISawLeaburnScore[/cite]what a load of rubbish
every single day there are complaints and digs at our support, last night, some of it was over the top, personally i didn't throw any toilet rolls, keep any footballs or jostle any stewards but everyone (well apart from some it seems) was having a right old time, we were 1,200 odd creating the noise of double or treble that. We even got some more interesting songs in like Pride of all London, Goodbye Horse etc which nolly would approve of!
the worse that happened was a couple of toilet rolls on the pitch Jesus H. last night Birmingham fans were throwing seats at Stoke that hit their own supporters, Plymouth fans were pelting Exeter with flares and missiles, the worst we came up with was two toilet rolls on the pitch... WHY DO WE HAVE TO COMPLAIN ALWAYS?
"the cheering of good passes was drowned out" - what is this 1956? if you want time and silence to give hearty applause to a performer's good efforts go to the bloody theatre.
I think I wrote cheer rather than applaud but whatever. Are you suggesting that the noise from the fans should be disconnected to the action on the picth? As this just re-affirms must conculsion that none of the poeple signing have the faitest idea what was going on on the pitch.
I'll go to theatre and applaud and you lot can go to church and sing a merry tune.
and wouldnt that just make a shit atmosphere. ''tackle''...''pass''...''shooooot'' altogether. half of going to watch charlton is soaking up and acting up with the characters around you. If we all had to behave exactly in accordance to whats happening on the pitch we would have stopped going years ago. When we lose we get overly depressed, when we win we get overly excited. A few herberts at a JPT game and you think its the end of the world.....
[cite]Posted By: CAFCBourne[/cite]Cant we sing to the female stewards something along the lines of "we dont like the look of you, we dont like the look of yooooooouuuuu" much nicer and everybodys almost happy then
How about half the crowd point at her and shout "Would ya, would ya, would ya?" and the other half shout "No, No, No!"
[cite]Posted By: ISawLeaburnScore[/cite]
but I won't be singing it anymore, it's destructive, irrelevant and the players won't like it
Ha ha, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit you know!
I kind of see where DRF is coming from but I'm with you - the odd bit of raucous crowd behaviour is all part of the fun of the football fan experience.
It sounds like the female steward got a bit of a rough deal, but opposition fans and players are fair game and as for the loo roll thing, my Dad is about the most law abiding and least rebellious person you'd ever care to meet, but even he tells me what an ace loo roll chucker he was down at the Valley in the 70s. Not exactly Galatasary is it?

I trust the purchaser of the loo roll, made sure it was made from recycled, non-bleached paper.
Saints preserve us, the support was excellent last night plenty of pro charlton stuff mixed with the usual anti oppo stuff, loads of banter with stewards & st Johns staff all good natured. A few childish things with the balls & toilet roll but generally a nice atmostphere, unlike most league games which tend to turn poisonous as soon as the game goes badly. If you think last night's support was un-acceptable I suggest you stay at home in future & enjoy a pastime more in keeping with your temperament like a crossword.

I'm with DRF. How does the incest song or who ate all the pies etc encourage the team. If you just want noise then why must it be abusive noise. Why not sing 'Postman Pat' or 'Sound of Music' or alternatively just go and stand in Bexleyheath singing 'who ate all the pies', incest song etc. I thought that the singing should be relevant to the team/football and encourage the team as a whole or players individually. I'm 47 but obvioulsy going on 96 to think this.
Last night the support was very good, some of it was over the top but most people were in good spirits and there was no harm done. The lady steward must have heard worse as must the guy who replaced her. Rhys Evans played for Milwall so I am sure he has experienced worse than some toilet roll (how funny was it when it got stuck to his glove though) and there was no violence or fighting. However pleased I was in front of those at the back who took "let's go f'ing mental" quite literally.
It seems a while since Charlton away fans have sung constantly for 90mins and it certainly felt as though there were more than 1000 odd fans. Thoroughly enjoyed it, as did my two uni friends who had never been to a Charlton game before. There are some idiots out there but every club has them and let's face it- it is far better than sitting in almost silence or worse Booing!
Jesus wept this thread! And to think people ask/wonder why people who used to enjoy going to football don't bother any more! Can't arsed to read back to find out who the poster was but suggesting the club would be fined for a toilet roll being thrown onto the pitch, lord help us!
I think a lot of the people who have jumped on the thread here should pay a bit more attention to Ketman's posts. He was there last night, he is not a 16/17 year old 'oik' etc and has said there has been a complete overreaction. It's a real shame (bearing in mind the issue of our sh1t home and away support gets so much coverage on this forum) that when we do take a decent following somewhere we can still find something to argue about!
[quote][cite]Posted By: CafcAndy[/cite]Support was great, end of.
What annoys me the most is, why could't they make the same effort when 400 of us wen't up to Swindon for a more important game?
Fairweather noisy fans. Only happened because it was Southend. Back to the usual Saturday.[/quote]
Well if the loud bunch yesterday read what some library goers on here are saying then YES it will be back to boring away days, with maybe 10mins of 100 people singing!

I'd love to go to all away games, but alas - my bank won't let me!
In regards to home games - there are a few of us trying to get the other stands going - it must be great to be in the upper north, but trying to get the East Stand going is like dragging a boulder uphill. We're about central and try to be as noisy as possible (within reason), but very rarely does anyone join in! Wouldn't it be great to have a drummer on every other block or so, with headphones & a click track to the whole stadium stays in time and about ten members from the upper north on every block!
We went to Millwall (don't remind me) last year, and the noise was PAINFULL as I'm sure some will remember. I'm not saying we should be like exactly like that, but it would be nice to not hear crickets chirping half the time!
iyaaaa guys cheers for the fan mail! love how half of you don’t no me but can judge me eh (; sure your all absolutely lush! now I weren’t escorted out the ground my brother got escorted due to getting pushed and him pushing us when everyone was singing 'lets go f***king mental' he got chucked out cause he had a white hat on, && as you all were concentrating on me leaving the ground you would of all noticed 5 minuets later I returned. oh and gills away last year no that weren’t me, I was in the Charlton end. any way guys’ once again thanks for the posts ;D. lots'a love! <3
You have a point puuurcy but at Millwall we were far louder than them for most of the first half ... only when they scored ... and scored ... did they get louder. The Den is not a cauldron of noise for most games I can assure you. Most grounds are no different to us.
But no excuse ... if we can get it louder then do whatever you can.

If you travel away supporting your football team you're more than entitled to make whatever noise you choose. No where are you told you must only make noise in response to action on the field or of a positive nature. If that is the case, can i ask any of the people on here did they boo when we were playing poorly? Because surely if that was the case they are undermining their own argument by making noise which isn't positive.
This wasn't a religious ceremony or a gathering to pay respect to our fallen war dead. It was a football match, where you go with like minded people to have an enjoyable day. If you can only enjoy yourself in relation to the football, there would have been a lot of suicides or even more empty seats over the last couple of seasons.
If people go and have fun and Charlton win as well, then who gives a hell what happens as long as someone doesn't get hurt?
When you go to the Valley you choose where you sit in relation to what you would like to do at the game. When you go to an away match you should consider the same.
To the 1,000 + at the game, i salute you, you're legends!

This was the 60s & 70s Oakster - it was probably made from a blend of asbestos, baby seal fur and Amazonian Mahogany.
I agree 100% ISWLS.

you know it makes sense ;-)
