The worst pubs in London.

Following on from the best pubs thread, I just visited the Goldsmiths tavern in new cross. What a hole!

What are the worst pubs you've been to in London?

  • Any pub that a) has a problem if you want them to top up your pint or b) has a problem if you tell them the beer's off.
  • Any pub that treats you like Claude Rains when you try to buy a drink unless you are a regular and /or doesn't have a decent drop of proper bitter.

If you're still in the area, nip down to the Little Crown on New Cross Road near the end of Deptford High Street. I lived round the corner from it for a year and though it was derelict for the first four months. However, it's still open and is a nice little pub, as long as you bring your own glasses (theirs are filthy) and probably best to bring your own drinks as their lines haven't been cleaned since VE Day.

Having said that, I'd drink in there over All Bar One or Wetherspoons any day of the week.
  • You know what, the more I think about it is there a decent boozer within 5 miles of Goldsmiths?
  • thought the goldsmiths tavern had been turned into a wine bar sort of place? is the dew drop inn through the fordham park still open?

Well it is Millwall area! They tend to be either horrible old dives or full of annoying arty types. Having said that, the Montague Arms was named Best Pub in Britain by the London Paper a couple of years back: http://transpont.blogspot.com/2008/08/montague-arms-best-pub-in-country.html

Not been in there so couldn't confirm or deny.
  • The Charlie Chaplin in Elephant...what a sh1t hole (hopefully it's been demolished now)!

Went in there once pre-raving at the Coronet. Sweet jesus. Full of skag heads (one working behind the bar with track marks), p1ssheads and small time criminals. Effin horrible.
  • Years back when I lived in Camberwell, The silver buckle could give some pubs a good run. but then again I only ever went in there after midnight when nothing else was open - always felt nervous in there like anything could happen at any time.

Sadly its still there. The one time I went in was to hustle some old men on the pool table. Not the worst place I've been in, but pretty bad.

    Now closed thankfully.

  • The Ram in Catford!
  • the ram is decent pub, never trouble and always clean.
  • Any pub in leicester square. Oast house at london bridge station is a diabolical excuse for a pub.

Was dreadful, though I ended up in there on more than one occasion!

Now it's another posh pub called The Tiger
  • Whenever I've been in The Ram at Catford it's usually had a smattering of people in it, all of whom are knocking on a bit.
  • The Ram is OK, it provides temporary sanctuary from Catford during shopping trips to Tesco's.

I'll take your Oasthouse and raise you The Boadicea (former Kent Connection) at Charing Cross. The place hasn't even got any windows ffs!

The Punch and Judy at Covent Garden has always been shite, and I think I would even include The Punchbowl in this category as well, full of hoorays, celebrity spotters and plastic wannabe gangsters - plus it costs a weeks wages for a pint!
  • World Upside down on OKR was a bit lively complete with gun detectors on the door (maybe not strictly a pub though)

    The Boadicea is truly awful.

Good call! However, I would be lying if I said I'd never had a drink in the godawful place!

  • Queen Anne at Vauxhall.

Must be a good pub. Craig Charles used to drink there.

Haven't been in there for four or five years and it needed a revamp then. Can I assume it hasn't been done up?
  • The Two Chairmen off Trafalgar Square (Pall Mall corner, by that Scottish place) always used to be the grimmest pub in the West End - shit beer, rickety furniture, curled-up sarnies in sellophane, incredibly dilapated considering its location. It may have been done up in the 3 or 4 years since I last set foot in there.

Off_It may have struck gold with the Kent Tavern/Kent Connection/Boadicea.
  • barge pole in scabbywood.
  • adsads

    cross keys erith upon thames
  • I have to say The Bramcote near the rusty toolbox.
  • Kelly's Night Spot in Peckham was always quite interesting - may well have changed or been removed by now though.

Most Wetherspoons are pretty bad - the one at Baker Street before and after England games is particularly grim.
  • any pubs that have flourescent strip tube lighting in the toilets to deter the smackheads are best avoided
  • Any Slug and Lettuce - they make me wish for a hand grenade every time I walk past one.
  • Any pub you can't get ale in. At least with a Wetherspoons you know that even if they people & the atmo is shite, you can get a decent pint for a good price.
