  • Result a little bit academic for me as this trophy is a bit of a joke, however I suppose I would go if we got Wembo. What was more impressive was the performance, particually the 2nd half. Plenty of passion, we reduced Mk dons to half chances(apart from the fine save from Robbie) as Semedo, Daily, Fortune and co were winning the first and second balls the majority of the time. Reids pace, strength and crossing was obviously the main differnece on the end but wagstaff does seem to get in some great areas. The only dissapointment for me was martin who looks too lightwieght, sees plenty of the ballb but was bustled off it too many time.
  • 2nd half when forts was alongside him Francis was only caught out of position twice, once when the player waltzed around him as if he was not there very early in the 2nd half, due to him being the wrongside. And once from asleep cross and Francis found himself inside of fortune.

Very good 2nd half performance for me.

    1st half woeful.

His distribution needs work. But I agree he played a great ball into a really dangerous zone

Maybe the issue is more doherty than Francis.
  • Southend away anyone?
  • Waggs is 100% charlton he loves us you can tell leave him the Feck alone.

5 goals in 9 games this season you really have fuk all to moan about
  • I was looking at the barnet score thinking we will get the winner of that
  • The simple maths is to give the ball to racon in a forward position, who it turn gives it to reid to either run at the full back or cross into the box. If we deploy this simple tactic, we will start scoring and winning, as proved tonight.

    Grant and Dizzy...
  • Our last 4 goals have all come from Reid crosses. He was superb 2nd half and not bad in the first.

To be fair to Waggy he did well in the first half, running at Lewington. In the 2nd we played almost exclusively down the left as Reid had the beating of the right back. Waggy's goalscoring record is outstanding, so he has to play.

Francis is not as bad as people say - but I prefer Solly. Defence looked really shaky first half, especially in the middle. Doc and Dailly doesn't seem to work.

When oh when will we play well for 90 mins. 3 of the last 4 we've played well for 45 and sh1te for the other 45.

Don't care if it was the JPT Southern section. Being in a quarter-final of anything feels good!
  • A win...

    Good news....
  • MKD had 3 different players booked for fouls on Reid.

  • [quote][cite]Posted By: Choice[/cite]Credit to Parky aswell tonight, his half time team talk made a difference.

Good to see Murray there as well, I think Charlton want to win this Cup this year![/quote]

A third division team will win it. There's no reason it shouldn't be us!
  • [cite]Posted By: Swisdom[/cite]Please get off Francis' back - it's getting REALLY boring now

2nd half he was solid, covered well, won his headers, wasn't skinned and put in a magnificent cross. If that happened in the prem people would say it was world class

Some of you will just dig at him regardless. His job is to defend and he did that well today.

Totally agree. Trouble is , some people just have it in for the guy.
  • [cite]Posted By: Off_it[/cite]Good win tonight.

And two cracking goals into the bargain.

First half was a dreadful spectacle between two evenly matched (poor) teams but the second half we upped our game and produced some real quality.

Could things be on the up?

people get on his back because his distribution is awful apart from1 cracking cross in the 2nd half he did keep giving the ball way very cheaply ,ok his defending isnt that bad but in most games this year he has given the ball back opposition an awful lot ,if he had a bit more composure on the ball then maybe supporters would get off his back.

Don't say that, you'll just jinx us!!
  • 2 good goals and a game of 2 quite different halves.
1st half I nearly gave up watching, I know its the 3rd division but cant we just stop the aimless punting?
2nd half much improved with Reid putting in some decent crosses. Still not a great performace but it was a meaningless cup game.
  • Not sure I agree with everyone about the first half.

This game followed a dire performance on Saturday and then we concede within two minutes. The first thing we had to do was get back to doing the things we had been doing poorly like battling, challenging for every ball, making tackles and playing the game at our pace. We did that quite well in the final 43 minutes of the first half and that gave us the platform to be slightly more expansive in the second. I understand it wasnt the prettiest but it may be more important than people are thinking.
  • Countless times we were knocking the ball around well, injecting a bit of pace with short sharp pass and movements - comes to Francis - HOOF.

I'll get off his back when he can pass a football. Have a look at his position when we cleared off the line from a corner, who or what was he meant to be marking/covering.

Hope he proves me wrong but the last few games he has been poor.
  • Positives :- We won, we are through to next round, Reid starting to look like the player we hope him to be, Dailly back, Abbott scored, Waggy scored.

Negatives :- Francis gave the ball away at least a dozen times tonight, for those that thought he had a good game I suggest you watch the game again. Giving the ball away as a full back is bad enough to do it consistently throughout the match is inexcusable time to drop him I'm afraid.

I don't think anyone is saying he played well, just that he wasn't as bad as at Brentford. He certainly wasn't skinned every time their left winger got the ball like on Saturday.

Who would we drop him for while Solly is out injured though? It's easy to say just chuck another youngster into the fray, but we know Pardew doing that to Waggy a couple of years back destroyed his confidence. I would still rather have Francis at right back than any of our centre backs playing out of position.
  • it was certainly one of francis' better games, but that cant detract from the fact he is still poor, especially his distribution... he has risen in my estimations from 'very crap' to just 'crap'. but at least this result has brought a temporary halt to some of the prophesies of doom on here in the last couple of days... and im more optimistic for my trip to plymouth now!

  • I agree with Brunello - the early goal knocked us off our stride but we got better and stronger as the match wore on and just about deserved the win, but we were nothing special, the reality check some of us need to remember is that we are a L1 side with very few players who could cut it at CCC level.

At least Reid played well and hopefully that form will translate into something tangible in the league this weekend.
  • agree that the result wasn't the most important thing last night but the performance was and after a poor first half (didn't see it all as was putting the little one to bed) thought we came out second half and played with some attacking purpose and intent

thought the pitch looked in good condition and also quite big (?) which suited us getting the ball wide for Reid, and also Racon towards the end, to run at them

Saturday will be a tough trip but a decent performance a 1-1 draw would be acceptable, I think, ahead of the big one at home to Brighton
  • Delighted to get a win, pleased for Reidy who I thought played his socks off, and I couldnt fault his work rate....Fortune and Dailly looked good, but the other two fullbacks are woeful....can wait to have the option of Youga and Solly to give them a go. Waggy just needs to get more involved going forward, I think he was instructed to cover Francis myself who after a couple of goodish showing has gone backwards again. Semedo, showed glimmers of last season and Racon had some nice touches, Abbott played as well as Ive seen him play and took his goal well...Martin, well he is looking a bit like a showpony....he needs coaching well and he will be a very good player indeed if he applies himself properly and dispenses with the silly stuff. Overall I hope this inspires confidence....we will find out on Saturday.

A cup run can't do us any harm. Bit of work to do yet, but a day out at Wembley would be appreciated, even if it is only the JPT.

Much better in the second-half last night. But Parky has got to sort out this 'game of two halves' lark . It's happening too often for it to be a coincidence.

Agree that Francis is doing little to dispel our original misgivings. But personally I'm more concerned about Martin - particularly if, as claimed above, it's a condition of Ipswich paying a substantial chunk of his wages that he has to play. Sure, he looks superficially good, with lots of showboating close-ball skills. But I'm getting a little tired of him trying to take on three players. Even if he beats them all (which he seldom does), there is never any end product as he invariably has his head down and no idea of what pass to play as he seems totally oblivious to the positioning of his support players ...

Well done, Waggy. Five goals in nine starts, I think. Still room for improvement and I'm certain it will come. But he should be one of the first names on the team sheet, IMO, and I'm slightly mystified by the attitude of his detractors.
  • Does anyone know of a website that's got the goals (not including Youtube which I can't access at work)?
  • While Wagstaff tends to drift in and out of games, his work ethic can't be faulted and his goal record has been superb. Like last season he looks very composed in front of goal, but is getting himself in the right position more often.

Lee Martin may be more naturally gifted, but his lack of final product makes him too much of a luxury. For the time being may be better utilised as an impact sub. If there is a contractual reason why we can not use him in this way, then he should be sent back to Ipswich for the good of the team.

That was me, I haven't heard anything, just a feeling I had. He's started every single game apart from his sub appearance in the first game of the season.

I hope it's not the case, as he should have to earn his place like everyone else. Now Reid is fit he has to start on the left and Wagstaff doesn't deserve to be dropped.

I expect he'll start up front alongside Abbott again on Saturday.
  • Apart from the first couple of minutes Mk were rarely a threat, I thought we looked pretty decent and went about the game in a very determined and efficient way, it is quite something to see us progress in any cup competition these days and any victory has to be good for confidence. The two goals were fantastically worked by Reid and executed superbly by Abbott and Wagstaff.
  • @ Heath hero, the goals will be on the BBC website from tomorrow
  • well pleased with the result and it is the best ground (even though it is soul less )outside the premiership i think mk dons will be a force in 30 years !

great reaction save from me old mucker robbie
francis gets the odd good cross in but is a bit hit andmiss atm
    jackson looks pony
    donkerty is struggling atm
dailly he is so important a true inspiration and his calming influence and footballing ability should never be underestimated
fortch calm and composed but dailly will keep him awake
semedo got away with some naughty stuff , hopefully can control himself
racon as with many of our players literally disappears for really really long spells of the game
wagstaff is our new bailey doing feck all for most of the game but having that priceless uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time for a goal (sort of how i thought benno would be on NLA's reports) long may it continue
reidy different gravy and worth the entrance fee to watch , hope he can keep this form up when he's getting double marked cos even parky would spot that he needs to do that if he were managing the oppo !
abbott done ok and puts himself about but seems a bit slower/unfitter than he was earlier in the season maybe it's our wonderful coaching kicking in
martin has gone proper downhill and looks awful as above maybe his getting charltonised into a shit footballer

first JPT game for me and i'm well pleased i went and a good loop when waggy scored late on , i was sad enough to then go home and watch it on ff on sky+ to see the good bits again
