I'm feeling a Lee Martin goal or two...he seems like the type of player that prefers to play at home in front of positive fans. 2-1 for me, Abbott and Martin.
It's important we take these early fixtures each game at a time. The pressure is off us this season and firmly on Southampton, Plymouth, Wednesday etc and we can use that to our advantage. We have a good look about us and a solid base to the team with Doc/Dailly Semedo/Mac through the middle. I am worried about our forwards scoring goals, but i hope they prove me wrong or we get a few more players in. Martin looks decent and creative and Waggy has got the ability to be a stand out player in this league this season.
Did anyone think Francis got beaten by his man too much against the O's? Great cross for first goal but for me he wasn't as solid as Solly was in the previous match.
Elliot Solly Doc Miguel Jackson Waggy Racon Mac Reid Martin Abbot (The most sluggish unfit pro i have seen in years but he gives it 100% and is a handfull)
Abbot is not a sluggish unfit pro at all. Bournemouth and orient his played combined over an hour up top on his own chasing down 4 defenders. Akpo came on for 10 mins and didn't chase no one down. Abbots hold up play and strength are immense. He knows this league like the back of his hand and will prove a real threat to defences this season and I can't wait to watch him playing for us weekly
Same team that we played against Orient but with Llera coming in for Dailly and possibily Solly for Francis but I wouldn't mind either way. I dont think Oldham will play like last season. They will want to go for a win after winning their first two like us so I can see it being a good game and it better be as I want a nice birthday present from Charlton :-) Open game, need a good atmosphere I think for this one and possibily need to be more patient then what people think, once we get one and take the lead more will come along. Team: Elliot, Francis, Doherty, Llera, Jackson, Waggy, Racon, McCormack, Reid, Martin, Abbott.
Prediction: Charlton 4-1 Oldham - Abbott to get a brace against his old side, Reid and Racon to get the others. Martin to play a blinder and top of the league going into the Huddersfield game a week later.
They will probably play a different game now that Dichov is manager.
He is the reason Abbot left as they did not get on when the wee jock was on loan there last season.
I imagine Pavel will have a point to prove on Saturday.
Dickov wasn't on loan with us last season at all, mate. Apparently when Dickov took over, after a few weeks of pre-season he wasn't impressed with Abbott's fitness or work ethic and didn't think he'd fit in with the way Dickov wants to us to play, add to that Abbott was on a pretty big wage and we're on a tight budget, so he wanted rid. Still I'd like Abbott with us, but I guess it's nice that we're not relying on one player for goals like we were last season with Abbott.
You'll have no worries about us playing the way we did last season. Our last manager played the most negative football we've seen at Oldham since Graeme Sharp mid 90s. Last season our manager adopted a "don't lose" mentality, even at home so teams we should have been going at and attacking from the off we're being invited to come forward. Dickov wants the emphasis on attack (being a goal poacher during his playing career you can see why), so you'll get an Oldham team coming next Saturday looking for goals. It'll either work and earn us a close win or my prediction a 2-2 draw. Or it'll leave us wide open for you to break us down and hammer us. Either way, none of us want us to go there and see the football we played last season. If we go to places like your gaff and have a go I know we'll end up with a few beatings but we'll also surprise some teams and get some wins. I'm hoping next Saturday will be one of them. We have a young side but we're passing the ball well and attacking and our midfield is one of the best I've seen in ages at Oldham. We're passing it very nicely, we're chasing everything down and keeping the ball well.
I reckon 2-2 though on the day and I'd take a draw. A lot of our fans are getting carried away, if we beat you I might join them and think we may have a decent shout at the playoffs, if you win convincingly it'll re-enforce my thoughts that we're a better team than last season, playing more attacking football who have as yet just played two of the poorest teams in the league already and are not top of the table material. But you are the real test to see where we're at. We gave Scunny a game in the cup and were unlucky to lose. So I do have some confidence going there.
Someone in this thread said we had a good start last season and that's not correct. The first game of the season we had Stockport at home, the Stockport who could barely notch up a win and we drew 0-0. We won 1 of our first 7 league games. This season we've won our first two whilst playing nice passing, attacking football. And as I said pretty much outplayed Scunny for the large majority of our cup game and for what it's worth we did beat a full strength Bolton side in pre-season, and Preston too whilst drawing with Wigan (but they're tinpot so we should have hammered them )
But don't judge us as the team that visited The Valley last season, because we're a different entity now. As I said, if we lose by convincingly it'll be down to the fact that we have come to win the game and have a go. An approach which will see us higher up the table than we were last season under Dave "Don't Lose!" Penney. Dickov's inexperience might lose us points this season, but his style of football and his emphasis on picking young, hungry players will certainly gain us more than last season. It should also be mentioned that we've pretty much started well with our two wins and our near win against Scunny without Sean Gregan, Chris Taylor and for two of the games, Warren Feeney, 3 of our best players. We're showing a lot of promise, so don't necessarily expect us to fall over, we'll come and make a game of it!
2-2 I reckon. Can't wait. Good luck in your other 42 games!
[cite]Posted By: cafc_se7[/cite]Im sorry JC but I can imagine the duo of Abbott and Martin giving that donkey gregan a torrid time down at the Valley, no brainer for me...3-1!
Gregan isn't a donkey, he's a quality centre back. Abbott wouldn't give him problems because Pav doesn't have much pace. If you don't have pace Gregan's got you in his back pocket. Not sure about Martin. But Gregan has come up against the best strikers in this division and held his own There's only one striker who's made him look like a donkey and I'm too embarrassed to mention his name. But Gregan, when fully fit he would probably walk into the first team of every team in this division. 35 years old and he played every minute of every league game last season, him and Abbott are the reason we stayed up.
I doubt he'll play on Saturday though, he's only just got rid of an injury and hasn't been match fit, and as a result hasn't played and with our defence doing as well as it has been Dickov will probably keep Jarrett and Hazell at the back.
Early days in the season and all that but Oldham are traditionally a good third division team and, together with Huddersfield the following week, will provide a decent benchmark as to how we are doing.
I just hope we take the game to them and pressurise their defenders with our pace and then actually convert any chances created. This game will be a lot harder than most of this thread would imply though and a win would be good.

I agree - Abbot looks like exactly what we need in this division. Can't understand the Akpo Sodje signing though. Think we need at least one more striker and a bit of pace at centre half. Seems like we have more square pegs in square holes this season though and i'm quite optimistic.
Sounds like it\s going to be an open entertaining game - think that will play into our hands with a decent sized crowd getting right behind the lads - can't wait!!
thanks for the detailed post JC. from what you say it sounds like it should be an entertaining game. i honestly cant predict it so i wont try. i just hope the defence can stay solid with dailly and semedo both out...
Will be tougher than a lot of people think. They have started very well and Owen Coyle tipped them for promotion after they beat Bolton 3-0. Will depend on how we deal without both Daily & Semedo for 90 mins. I think we will win by a single goal if Llera plays well.

2-1 Charlton, Abbott getting the winner!

Probably wont be going as will be getting drunk but you never know i may go, also we knicked their best player so surely this is no contest?

Must have been Dizzy Izzy McLeod when you played us at The Valley last season.
;o)
And there can't possibly be two left at 5pm on Saturday.
Most of our ex-players seem to regularly score against us - so surely it'll work for us on Saturday?
