  • [cite]Posted By: Ketman[/cite]I wonder if everyone will be so forgiving if we blow a 3 goal lead at Orient on Friday I'll wager that they won't.

Of course they won't - getting out of League One matters, the Carling Cup doesn't - simple...
  • [cite]Posted By: Screamer[/cite]Everyone keeps saying it will be forgotten if we win on Friday. We might not win on Friday.

Of course that's a possibility, but the point is people will still care far more about the League defeat/draw than a League Cup loss.

[cite]Posted By: Jayajosh[/cite]I'd like to know the last time we went 3 goals up only to lose 4-3, back in the 70 or 80s perhaps? When are going to finish off our opponents? Now, where are all my toys!

Derby at the Valley in about 94/95 we went 3-0 up and got beat 4-3 - I think their winner came in about the last minute

    possibly a midweek game?

I remember it, I think it was a weekend game but it was pretty dark. Marco Gabbiadini did the damage methinks.

When we kept the ball on the ground last night especially in the first half we seemed to waltz through the opposition, good link up between martin and abbott, Racons ball control and pace on the ball looked excellent but sometimes lacked the cutting pass. Incredible that we threw away the lead. I do feel Mambo simply isnt up to it at the mo and was at the heart of mistakes for shrewsburys first 2. Solly put in a good shift considering he was on the left, and dealt well with a lot of attacks on that side, he also looked to play the ball out, unlike Llera. Waggy looked much more up for it in the 2nd half (some poor crosses though), him and reidy looked like they could make up a formidable wing attack this season. Smart maybe had a few good touches but really didnt make much differance. Worner despite the amount of goals in the net looked confident and like he will do a good job of back up goalie. The whole charlton crowd seemed to have quite a light attitude to the game, just as stunned finding ourselves three up as finding ourselves 4-3 down - same old charlton taking the p**ss. We could easily of had more goals, excellent abbott strike onto the bar and a good penalty appeal. Bottled local shropshire Ale plus good pies, bizarrely a good night.
  • Yesturday was a game of football that Charlton Athletic should want to win. We all want our team to win. Whether its in the bexley league or premier league!
It matters to me that we lost. It matters that we threw away a 3 goal lead. Whatever the opposition, whatever the competition, we all want to see our team win.
Don't understand how people seem almost happy that we lost!
  • Dont worry heavenSE7 there will be ranting n moaning a plenty before the seasons out.

Seems to be some pretty 'philosophical' comments on here, and it is questionable that we would reach the later stages of this particular cup competition, but of course that is the whole basis of cup games the weaker teams ( that is Charlton) take on the stronger teams. It is partly to judge your skills and more importantly raise badly needed revenue. I thought it was particularly relevent last night as most of the team on Saturday had hardly played together before, as mentioned on th previous post match thread!. I am afraid i do not accept the views that cup games are unimportant, as without a reserve side how do you intergrate the squad and how does a fringe player improve and move up into the first team!. I can hear the claim what if the first team players get injures, well Reid, Doc, and Sodje came on, so they were not rested, and I am unsure that pro's cannot play 3 games in a week anyway!. Perhaps not three full games but you are just as likely to get injured if you are on the pitch for 90 minutes or 9 minutes, if that is the worry, you are talking about percentages against getting a knock. So on that Basis Solly will have to rest for the Orient game, as well as Waggy!.So what would have happened if Abbott and Martin got injured!, or they got a knock!..... or are they going to rest as well for the Orient game.

Yes we all know the Orient game like all league games are going to be the focus for Charlton, but we did throw away a three goal advantage, how that effects team morale is unknown against a local rival on TV on Friday!

Obviously my opinion is different to many on here, and I do not know the players unlike Parky and his team, just seems to me that either you take these games with the intention they are meant for, or send out the kids!.

This seemed to be a half way house, that did us much harm as constructive use. Not the first time that Parky has done this remember the FA cup game last year, I remember Parky being very bemussed by that episode!.

    What is that about history.............
  • We got our Charlton back.
  • [cite]Posted By: buckshee[/cite]the sooner the league cup is abolished the better , either that or take the premier league teams out and abolish the auto windscreens or whatever it's called these days
I couldn't agree more. I can't remember a cup night which has had some many clubs getting knocked out by lower league teams, completely mickey mouse and something the FA needs to look in to. The cup started as a way to justify installing floodlights in the 1960s.

I actually prefer the paint pot as we have a chance of winning it, although I hope we get knocked out of the first round to avoid any injuries to our paper thin squad.
  • [cite]Posted By: Ketman[/cite]Losing a 3-0 at ANY level of football including park football is inexcusable end of story.
    Spot on.

Far too early to make any real judgements for the games ahead.
Big worries for me though are a real lack of pace at the back and also problems in the centre of midfield as Large highlighted.I don't mind Racon but more than ever now we need him to start taking games by the scruff of the neck and run them. He's got the tools. And now Bailey has gone, doing just enough is no longer acceptable.

  • [cite]Posted By: PL54[/cite]Oggy - did anything ever feel like the end of the world to you ?

Oh, yes mate ....... I've had a few real challenges in real life. Now that puts things in proper perspective.
It teaches you what's important in life.

    Football is just a game.

    ;o)
  • Just seen the goals. I can't believe more hasn't been made of Abbots first. That first touch over the shoulder was quality, and a clinical finish (i think it was with the other foot as well). Seems to have a lovely technique. Hopefully Martin and Abbott will click, with Akpo to come on and better teams and nick a few goals where necessary. I've never been so optimistic after blowing a 3 goal lead!!!
  • "Bottled local shropshire Ale plus good pies"

so tell me again why we can't do this?
  • just got to work. Stand by what I wrote at 2.30am. I had a cracking day out. Yes we shouldn't have lost from 3-0 up but considering we hadn't scored in the League Cup in the last three seasons I was happy we were 3-0 up at all. If it was a league game I'd be fuming but it wasn't. Naivity from the kids cost us. Get over it. They will learn far more from that than they would have done if we had cruised to a 5-0 win. Nice ground, nice place. Sign their nippy striker now.

[cite]Posted By: carly burn[/cite]I don't mind Racon but more than ever now we need him to start taking games by the scruff of the neck and run them. He's got the tools.

He might have the tools but I just don't think he has the will or guts. Whatever else he brings to the mix he has never shown the ability to be a really creative force in midfield.

Although not an instant pessimism merchant myself, there are some on here whose spinning skills after we lose would outdo Alastair Campbell.
  • So we are out of the Beer Cup.....ooh!! Last night was just a friendly as far as I am concerned, we used some second string players and according to Large they got found out, better in a worthless cup competition than the league where promotion is all that matters. Personally I do not want a cup run of any kind this season, Leeds had a good run in the cup last season and it nearly buggered up their promotion and they had a bigger squad than us. Bring on Orient on Friday because thats all that matters this week!!

Not spinning in the slightest just giving an honest reflection on what i saw and how I felt as are others who were there.

I don't often agree with Large (sorry, mate!) ...... but here's a guy who went all the way up there on a school night,
says it exactly as he saw it ...... and can see this particular cloud does indeed have a silver lining.

In fact, it seems that most of those who didn't go are 'fuming'.

And those that actually went to the match, have come back and told us that they enjoyed the game, there were many positives - and at times this cobbled together team played well.
  • Whilst the Carling Cup was probably not going to be won by us, and we can now concentrate on the league having participated in an exciting but ultimately fruitless game I cant help but see all our recent cup flops as opportunities not taken. A small cup run would help our bare coffers somewhat and last night being 3-0 up and losing 4-3 to lower opposition leaves a sour taste in my mouth, of course it's all about the league and promotion- but just for once it would be nice to be in the draw for the next round of a cup competition.

Parky himself said much the same in his post match comments.

  • Like Oggy, I too have to agree with Large's comments ( a first !!) The majority of Addicks in attendance seemed to enjoy the proceedings especially when we went 3-0 up and were philosophical when the Shrews fought back, with some skill & style let it be said. A couple of "Parky out" shouts were fuelled by beer rather than vitriol..

However, as others have alluded, players of the Mambo/Stav ilk will have few opportunities to learn from last night's experience without the finishing school that a reserve team would provide... And prompts the question, what is the future for our promising Academy players ? Answers on a postcard, please.

Interesting reading these views and I am pleased to read about the positives coming out of last night and that it's not one big whinge-fest. Credit to Large for setting the tone, imho.

Parky also now has an interesting dilemma for Friday - all 3 of his strikers have scored in the last 2 games so which 2 does he go with on Friday? It would be tough on Akpo to drop him - he did ok on Saturday - but I think based on seeing them together on Saturday and the comments on the performance last night that Martin and Abbott is a better pairing than Abbott and Akpo.

Detention for you Oggy!...... there are no kids at 'school' at present.

Do try and pay attention at the back there....... perhaps take off those rose tinted glasses, Glad that Large 'enjoyed' the game...... but as you say he at least made the game, unlike 'the moaners' myself included!
  • Oggy - with all your worldly experience do you celebrate winning or just stick with the middle ground then too ?
  • It's always a worthless cup when your team isn't in it anymore.

I certainly wouldn't want a cup run to ruin our push for promotion, but I do think the club could do with the income which would be generated if we got through to the later stages and got picked against one of the top Premiership teams. Win or lose on the pitch, it would be a win as far as the bank balance goes.
  • I enjoyed last night despite throwing away a three goal lead, the coach journey was a bit tedious(that will be my one and only coach trip this season) but the game was good and so was the half time pint.

Abbott and Martin combination looked a handful and I agree with other comments on this thread about the midfield but it's not the end of the bloody world and our history in this competition is woeful anyway.

Move on and look forward to Friday

    COYR!
  • Thanks for the report Large, and everyone else who went. A lot to feel encouraged about, despite the result.

On the radio Bradley Allen made the comment that there was a lack of leaders out there. But then we were missing Dailly and Semedo and I hope McCormack will grow into that role too, so again, no point in beating ourselves up about it.

Lee Martin is clearly a player who needs to rebuild his self confidence, so last night sounds very encouraging. If Parky can get him playing to his full potential we may well end up with the best player in the division.

There's a few on here who have seen how I celebrate!

I don't think *anyone* is happy we lost. Some are just putting it in perspective that losing this game was immaterial compared to losing a league game, especially given that some of the players who played last night will only play if 3 or more players ahead of them are injured/suspended.

Mambo will only start at centre back if 4 of Dailly, Doherty, Llera, Semedo and Youga are injured/suspended.
Stavrinou will only start if 3 of Jackson, Semedo, McCormack and Racon are out.

You catch my drift. Obviously there's a chance that these things can happen, but it's unlikely we'll ever have to put an entire team out in a league game which is as weak as last night's.

And the main thing is that the players who are most likely to figure on Friday are the ones that did ok last night: Martin, Abbott and Francis (someone said he was the least culpable of the back four).

    Don't panic.
  • I drove up to Shrewsbury and enjoyed the game. Bit stunned that we went three nil up and as others have said would rather win on Friday Thought the front two were good, Solly was solid again (apart from one error),Reid very good. Waggy poor as were Llera and Mambo. I know the keeper was not to blame for again of the goals but he does look very small!!!
Leaving on a positive note there were lots of crosses flying in and we could have scored more
