Do you think Scott Wagstaff would make a useful striker or "in the hole" player?

  • If we were playing well and looking for back-up plans and plan B/C/D etc then I'd say give it a go tonight.

I think Parky should be picking his strongest available side tonight though in an attempt to get this squad to gel better. The players need game time together, no more so than up front so Benson and Abbott up top for me tonight - we can experiment if/when we have the luxury of confidence and form behind us.
  • [cite]Posted By: cafcdan18[/cite]He is not quite there as a winger as too often he struggles to get into games and although his work rate cannot be faulted, .

Any winger relying on the wretched Francis for passes to get in the game is going to be out of luck. In the hole I think he will struggle as he is not a "back to goal player". Best left on the wing and hope Solly recovers soon. Or play him full-back behind Martin.
  • NO & NO

    this

also Waggy is an impact sub.
  • Just thought I'd bump this....

2 games up top 2 goals
  • Looks like you could be right after all, he seems to be doing extremely well in this position.
His got the persistence in his play, which is ultimately what got him his goal today, well done to him.
  • Involved far more in a central position and he looked dangerous
  • Agreed. He reminded me a little today of an old hero, who was present and was interviewed by BDL at half-time : Gary Nelson. Similar kind of endless running and ''persistence'' in Waggy's play - good choice of word by Dartford Addick.
  • I was thinking Waspish actually

Reminded me of a fast, non-twattish Paul Dickov

As I said in the markings thread - possibly the most energetic performance I've seen in a Charlton shirt
  • Damian matthews said that, that position is his best one

  • Was going to start a thread on Waggy today but will use this one. That goal showed everything good about the bloke...how many of the rest of our strikers would have persisted in the position he was in. Waggy never gives up and (like Nelson) benefits from others mistakes because of that. Was so pleased for him, he really is a determined guy and deserves all the plaudits and success he gets. For me he is an example for youth players, maybe not the most naturally gifted but will be a success because he will make the most of the ability he has.
  • Liked him in his role today and would like to see more of him up there. His got the beating of defenders especially in the later stages. Benno is back now though so benno and Joe will most prob be first choice
  • I think its a very good option. As ORH says, Benson and Joe will probably be first choice but when your other striking options are Abbot and Sodje its handy to have something a little different. I know we now have Eccleston too but I cant' see him here any longer than the end of the season while Waggy may well be a CAFC man for most or all of his career.
  • I say move over Benson.
  • Wagstaff's energy through the middle was a definite bonus. I hope he continues to play there. His pace will definite worry a lot of the slow centre backs in this division. What a great attitude Scott Wagstaff has. He never stopped running the whole game. He is good as he knows how to put the ball in the back of the net and with some of our strikers that has been a bit of a struggle in the past.
  • I'd also rather have Waggy playing upfront than Benson, for me Waggy offers far more than Benson in terms of pace and work rate as well as being pretty clinical in front of goal recently.

2 goals in 2 matches, why change it?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If we continue to play the ball on the deck then the best options we have up front would be Waggy and Nathan, IMHO. Both have pace, movement and the ability to finish.
  • Sorry, must've been watching a different game - the fella looked lost yesterday. Did well for his goal, but would probably have done exactly the same from the wing.

The question is, would Benson have capitislised on the defenders mistake like Waggy did? ...

No, that wasn't the question, was it? The question was would he make a useful striker or "in the hole player". My answer was that he looked lost up there.

Would Benson have capitalised in the same way? We'll never know, but my guess is probably not.

Oh I totally agree at point of the game he did look lost, but just think his slightly a better option overall.
  • Sheer pace got Waggy his goal not persistence; and no, none of our other players would have got there before the goalie.
If Waggy is to be effective as a striker or in-the-hole he's going to have to develop a much more effective all round game.
I definitely think he can improve and with his pace and composed finishing he has a head start.
  • I think we are seeing the influence of Keith Peacock at work who has probably noticed that he has no real trick as a winger.

Waggy played that role to some degree at Spurs, and could have scored in the first half, but had to help the defence out increasingly being one of our few players with the pace to compete with some of the Spurs players.

Not just Peacock, but Damian Matthews ........ who had huge influence on Waggy as a youth player, and invariably played him in the hole.
  • Oh, I'll say it. And Phil Parkinson who picked up the pieces that Pardew created with throwing Wagstaff in at the deep end far too early in his career.

Don't think you can underestimate his influence.
  • I think if we can train him to receive the ball better he could be immense there.

    My thoughts exactly.

I think you're wasting your energy WSS.
