Do you think Scott Wagstaff would make a useful striker or "in the hole" player?

edited July 2010 in General Charlton
He's clearly got speed on his side, he's pretty strong and has a very good strike on him. I just wonder if he could do a job as a forward.

Didn't he used to play up front for the reserves? Could he be our very own poor man's Thierry henry?

Of course we still need him to sign a contract don't we

  • He used to play striker for the school team, so he is does know the role well and scored all our goals. He shouldn't defiantly be given a chance.
  • I think it would be worth a try as from what we've seen I don't think he's a very good winger. He has pace but doesn't have the skill to beat his man on a one vs one basis.

He has a shot on him as we've seen and pace terrifies central defenders especially in this league when they aren't the quickest.
  • What we got to lose...?
  • I've been desperately trying not to mention Ambrose as a perfect "in the hole player" but can't hold back any longer!
  • There was always going to be a joke in there somewhere....

I'm surprised I held out so long!
  • There is maybe some potential there, but I'd say he needs to be playing off the shoulders of defenders looking to get clear in behind and on the end of flick-ons by a big man. Not sure he's got the skill or composure on the ball to play as an in the hole linkman.

maybe a bit on the lightweight side for a centre forward though, although as you say he's certainly quick enough to worry a few of the cloggers in this division if he can get around them.

I think you will find this is Tamer Tuna's position or preffered position. I think the last time he played at the Valley in the trophy match at the start of last season when he scored.

Although at present I am sure the lad would welcome a start anywhere on the pitch!. Saw Waggy at the Swindon game, agree about the turn of speed, to me seems like a natural winger, if of course you play wingers!. My concern is what happened at that Leeds game, the Leeds player played the player and not the ball, it seemed to knock the stuffing out of the lad!. The young players are gonna have to expect this type of treatment!

Be interesting to see how they react!
  • Needs to have spent most of this summer down the gym if he's to make any impact next season - far too lightweight for this division (or any other for that matter) IMO
  • I disagree - I think he's pretty strong actually.

I also like Tuna in that position and hope to see more of him this season

That could make your eyes water!
  • No!!!!

All decent players play up front for their school teams. Doesn't mean they can ever cut it in that position professionally. There are reasons he plays on the wing. If he were a natural forward, coaches would have seen that and played him there before.
  • Yes definately

"Big striker Chris Iwelumo led the line up front with Darren Ambrose playing in the hole behind him...."

Ambrose playing in the hole link..

Too late mate, the OS already beat you to it...
  • I seem to recall making a similar suggestion sometime back.

Hopefully he has spent the summer in the gym building up some strength which he would need for the role.

Who would play on the wing though? Sam is 99.999999999999999999999% gone.

Come to think of it Waggy isn't signed up either so this discussion is probably academic!
  • Never thought of Wagstaff as strong.

He's played up front when he's younger as others said. Could he do it at League One level though? Some games I think the big centre backs would have him under control, in the right games he might do well there.

This has come up before, I suppose it'll depend on who we can bring in, and if Sam and Burton stay (and Wagstaff himself of course). He might have to play on the right, or we might need to try him up front.
  • Always said would make a great striker, quick direct good finisher
  • if we wanna finish bottom half of this league yep waggy will get us there

But he tries harder than Sam mate so he must be better.

agree - at the moment he's a last 25 min impact sub

of course , i forgot ... and i think he said he was a charlton supporter and came thru our academy , so without doubt a great prospect and we'll be lucky to keep hold of him and is definitely a championship player

    Yawn.

Played as a conventional striker, I'd more or less agree with you, Scoh.
But given more of a free role to play in the hole, then you never know ..... has a good enough touch to collect a ball under pressure and link well, and the pace to get past a defensive line and 1-on-1 with a keeper.

We'll never know until he's tried in that role. And pre-season friendlies are the time to experiment.
But he has to sign a deal first!
  • Wagstaff would do very well up front, if not in a 2 then certainly as part of a front 3. Good, composed finisher, quick and direct.
  • If we can keep Youga and Richardson to give width, I'd like to see Akpo upfront with Waggy and (Reid?) a left winger playing on their wrong side and cutting inside to shoot. It could easily be adapted to have say Waggy in the hole with Racon moving out to cover. Last season showed that without a prolific striker, goals need to come from midfield, and I don't think were likely to get anyone decent on a free unless it's a kid from the Prem on loan. It would be a waste to go 4-4-2 with a mediocre strike force and may teach us to play it on the floor again.

A 4-3-3 could be very good with the right players. We'd have numbers in midfield, and wingers that become strikers.

Problem is finding the players, someone who can play up front on their own, ideally more Burton than Iwelumo, someone with a good touch rather than big tall striker to aim long balls at (not that we should have used Iwelumo like that, but the players couldn't help but hoof it up to him). Out wide it just wouldn't suit Sam if he stays, he doesn't score goals and he doesn't get into enough good positions, looks more comfortable in a 4-4-2. Reid and Wagstaff it could suit as they're more direct and can score goals.
  • Just to remind people Waggy and Tuna have been on the fringes of the team for well over a season! In fact Tuna made his debut in the dying embers of the Championship!.

Why would we want to take some kid from the prem!..... I thought the reason these guys were not playing was because they did not have enough experience!. With Burton's future in doubt! that leaves us a very unproved strike force!. I am sure that we are going to have to bring in some people, but people who have experience, or some experience. I would rather play our own than others!. I do not expect to start with the players mentioned, but they need to make an impact this year, if of course Waggy stays!. Starting with Akpo.... now that is a punt!. Let us see what he does in the freindlies, not that that is a guarantee.. Tuna scored/assisted a few last year in pre-season, so no guarantee there of even being on the bench!.

I don't know who mentioned bringing a young striker on loan, but if there's a Defoe out there I would like to bring them in and play them over our own youngsters. Not many of them around, not one of the top goalscorers in the league last season was a loanee. If we can get a 20+ goal striker, even on loan, it would be well worth it. Not sure there is anyone like that around though, in that most young strikers we could get will have a lot to learn themselves. He scored loads at Bournemouth and and didn't even play all season.

Did you forgot Schoham West Ham nicked Defoe a few moons ago from us!....
20+ goal scorer . what league would that be,...... remember Fleetwood!.
Well maybe we will get someone, but I have my doubts!..... Really hope I am proved wrong
