[cite]Posted By: oohaahmortimer[/cite]if we wanna finish bottom half of this league yep waggy will get us there
At last someone talking sense!
Wagstaff as a striker, do me a favour, how the opposition centre backs would love that.
Good finisher? - how many goals has he scored?
Don't even want him on the right wing let alone as a striker. One trick pony that is far too lightweight. If we end up playing him as a striker all season oohahh is right, relegation looms!
what is there to learn? you can have the ability to put the ball in the net or you cant. simple as that. people try and complicate this game.thats why our national team is doing so great!!!!
[cite]Posted By: ken from bexley[/cite]Last season showed that without a prolific striker, goals need to come from midfield, and I don't think were likely to get anyone decent on a free unless it's a kid from the Prem on loan. Harveys gardener quote....
Did you forgot Schoham West Ham nicked Defoe a few moons ago from us!....
20+ goal scorer . what league would that be,...... remember Fleetwood!.
Well maybe we will get someone, but I have my doubts!..... Really hope I am proved wrong
Of course, was talking about Defoe's time at Bournemouth. If (a very big if) there's a very promising striker at a Premier League club, and we have the opportunity to take them on loan, we shouldn't turn it down. However most won't be better than what we have, so I'd agree with you. I'm talking about a big talent being available, not that we should take someone on loan for the sake of it.

Lets bear in mind he made pretty much EVERY appearance as a sub last season - he scored 5 I think
Let's look at the contributions of Lloyd Sam, Therry Racon, Jose Semedo (not there to score I know). Kyel Reid.
If you think L1 defenders would welcome a small whippet who knows how to hit the target then you need to think again. The biggest asset in the modern game is pace - whilst he is not the finished article he definitely has potential to be very dangerous
Sorry Swis. - I usually agree with a lot you say but not this time. I really cannot see why people rate Wagstaff. Runs around like a headless chicken most of the time and if we are left having to play him in the hole or as a striker we'd be doomed I tell yer, doomed!
Anyway if we did play him as a striker, you know everything would be lumped into the air to him!!

If Wagstaff becomes good enough to start it'll be more John Robinson than Lloyd Sam. Doesn't have the quick feet but if he starts reading the game better, puts in better crosses and gets the most out of his ability he could be a good player.
Should have said I agree he's not ready to start, at least he wasn't last season. Hopefully he pushes on again, just as he did last season by showing he could score at first team level.

I'm not saying he is the finished article - but maybe he's one of those players that rises to the challenge. If Sam doesn't stay (and lets be honest it's not looking likely) then Waggy could grasp the opportunity.
I agree he is not technically perfect but pure pace and an eye for goal are not things you can really teach, you either have it or you dont. Other attributes CAN be taught and learned.
He has the basics - now just needs an experienced player to give him some 1-to-1 coaching and we might unearth someone. Please come and do some coaching for £1k a week Mr Di Canio
Would like to see him given a chance through the middle, not convinced he is good enough to be first choice on either wing yet but he has shown that he is a decent finisher and could do well imho alongside a target man. Remember the goals against Barnet and Walsall when he went through one on one and looked very composed.
Needs a lot of work before he can be considered good enough to start week in week out on the right but would certainly be in favour of Waggy getting a chance upfront- even if it was only in the cup.
Think he'll get knocked about too much in that position. That said Ambrose has done well there, drifting in from deep, so I guess it could be an option. I could see him spending one match getting buffeted around and everyone taking against him. Also, if we're playing with a target man having him in the hole means that there's a big gap between the guy winning the ball and the next person he can pass to - or if we're playing with two strikers, it means giving up on wide players, which I see as problematic.
Certainly his pace would trouble some of the slower defenders in League 1. Playing on the shoulder aswell or dropping deep, think he would give some defenders a torrid afternoon.

IMO this is the only way Waggy could play through the middle - providing he has the positional sense and timing in knowing where to play and when to move. It could make him elusive to opponents and very difficult to mark......and he may be the one player we have who can come from behind our target man, past the last defender and into 1-on-1 territory.
He could also be hugely successful in dragging defenders out of position and creating space for team mates to exploit.
There's only one way to find out - play him in the role in pre-season friendlies.
Looks pretty damn strong to me! Its strength in depth we'll lack this year...
Loosing bailey could end up to be a blessing in disguise, we wont have to use a formation to accommodate him, roll on next year!
I do wish we wouldn't slate our players who are clearly improving. The guy had severe stage fright under Pardew, then last year he scored some stunning goals and WAS one of our only players who was willing to gamble and beat someone one-on one. Anyone remmeber his superb run and pull back for Burton against Swindon? Anyone remember how appalling Sam was at reading games and protecting his full back until basically last season?
Waggy needs to stay as a winger and learn when to stick and protect his full back and when he can support the attack. He doesn't read games yet, so no it'd be an utter waste putting him in the hole as he eats space when he needs to stick and sticks when he needs to drop into space.
[quote][cite]Posted By: Leroy Ambrose[/cite][quote][cite]Posted By: oohaahmortimer[/cite]i agree if he improves a lot he'll be good[/quote] If Amdy Faye improves a lot he'll be good.[/quote]
If Amdy Faye improves a lot, he'll be average.
Getting back on topic though, I think Waggy deserves a bit more credit than he gets. He does have quiet games but rarely has poor ones. I like him when he's constantly trying to get past the full back, like he was at Orient, but particuarly when he's on the left he doesn't do that often enough.
I still think he's a winger but he should get more recognition for his goals. He's got four this season. That's three more than any of our strikers. he really does have a knack that the rest of the team don't.
As a winger I still don't think he's very effective he gets goals but in terms of crosses, assists, beating his man I don't think he is great. And he often has games where is anonymous. But he has pace and we've seen with Ayinsah that pace and being direct frightens defenders. Wagstaff can obviously finish so I would like to see it given a go, even though I don't think Parky will do it.
He is not quite there as a winger as too often he struggles to get into games and although his work rate cannot be faulted, I think we need more on either the right or the left. Ideally Reid will be starting and fully fit soon whilst Lee Martin looked better on the right than he did through the middle on Saturday.
I really believe as a striker or in the hole, Waggy would be very influential, his pace and energy alone would test most defences whilst from what I have seen he is one of our best finishers and some of his goals have been the kind you would expect from a striker (poachers goals against Brighton last season, Tranmere and Oldham this year). I know Anyinsah is perhaps fairly similar but maybe we should try Anyisah on the right/left with Waggy up top alongside someone more physical. Personally I would try Abbott and Waggy as a partnership tonight. Really do not see what harm it can do and Waggy is a decent bet to score.
I would argue that Waggy is scoring goals at the moment because he is playing on the wing. He often tucks in from the right flank to get on the end of crosses from the left flank (often unmarked- see goals against Oldham and Brentford), hence why his goalscoring record has been very impressive this season. I think we should keep playing him on the wing as that way he can keep improving. Asking him to play up front may lose the effectiveness he has in ghosting in at the back stick.
And finally I'd like to think our management team don't change the system for something that is simply 'worth a try'.
