Excuse me, but if he was given the choice I'm sure Parky would have kept Darren !
  • This is a direct result of our financial position, and has nothing to do with Parkinson I would think, Parky's hands are tied I would suspect until Bailey's sale goes through.
  • Think Randolph might have left even if he was first choice keeper (though most were happy with Elliot this time last year). A 3 year contract, potentially European football, more money than he'd get here (even at Motherwell). Why would he stay?

There are far more reasons for him to leave than the Ikeme situation.

that's exactly why he's told him on various occasions he can leave.
  • Elliot is a good number one. One of them was always going to leave as they are a similar age and should both be playing first team football. No doubt it is a financial decision from both parties as well as Parky having to decide who his number one will be next season and I have to say I agree with the decision.
  • Charlton goalkeeper Darren Randolph has signed for Motherwell on a three-year deal

The 23 year-old comes recommend by former Scotland and Charlton player Christian Daily who speaks highly of the Irishman.
The Republic of Ireland U-21 international had grown frustrated at a lack of first team action last season.
But after featuring and impressing in the club's last 11 games this season was expected to compete with the Addicks Rob Eliot for the No. 1 jersey.
Randolph has played at every level for the Republic of Ireland youths and earned a B cap but has yet to make the full senior squad.
He once refused to play in an FA Cup tie for Hereford United after hearing that the club were interested in signing another goalkeeper.
Brown has already signed one goalkeeper this summer, snapping up Lee Hollis after the 24-year-old's contract ended with Airdrie United, while Michael Fraser remains on the club's books.

As most of us would have before Elliot's injury to be fair Stuart Hindsight...

I agree, we should have given him a five year contract last year and then Motherwell would have paid £5m for him instead...
  • I suspect Mr Randolph may live to regret this. When he runs out infront of 3000 people at -5* degrees sometime in January things back here might not seem like such a bad option.

Randolph wanted a guarantee that he would be first choice and Parky could not give that & on the basis that he didn't want to stand in his way of 1st team football Parky said he could go. Not because he wanted rid.
  • Are we not entitled to compensation if we offered him a new contract though? If he is to go on a free, I guess that suggests we didn't. Which seems a bit unlikely to me... though I seem to remember the new contract offer must be at least be as good as the existing contract. Can anyone clear that up?

Disappointed he's left. Good luck to him.

As he's moved to another country they don't have to pay a fee it seems.
His contract expired with Charlton at the end of June, making him a free agent, and utilising cross-border transfer rules, he has switched to Fir Park on a 3-year-deal.
  • On our site

    Offered a deal rejected it

"Darren Randolph has joined Motherwell on a free transfer after the goalkeeper rejected Charlton's offer of a new contract."

Now can we lay off Parky.

The bloke has a impossiable job
  • "I said to him and Robbie [Elliot] that the challenge was there to come back and fight for it but I think Darren's gone to Motherwell because they've guaranteed him that number-one shirt.

"I had to show respect to Robbie as he had an excellent season until he got injured so there was no way I was going to make any guarantees.

"The mentality I want at the club is people who are going to fight to take us forward. Darren's taken the challenge of going to Motherwell and I hope it goes well for him. I'll get a good replacement in no doubt."
I know some won't agree with that, but it seems reasonable to me. Motherwell needed a first choice keeper, we have another under contract who was first choice for over a year until he got injured.

Could say Randolph is better, we should have guaranteed him a place, but then that gives him a bit of room to be complacent, as he'd have signed knowing he'll definitely start.
  • Thanks Scoham you just proved me right.

  • Lost the better of the two in my opinion. Time to wake up Charlton!
  • Must admit I was impresed with Darren's goalkeeping, I thought the defence seemed a lot more compact and settled. After saying that Robbie is a good keeper, perhaps 2 decent keepers is a luxury at this level.

My concern is the other end to be honest!

I liked him but if it was time to move on then it was time. Also can't stop a penalty for toffee!
  • Was very good in the run of games he got, a loss. I do think he is better than Elliott, but then I don't think Elliott is too bad a keeper anyway and he is still young.

As said above having a choice of 2 decent keepers at this level is a bit of a luxury and we have more pressing problems than in goal. unless Elliott gets sold of course :-P
  • When do we get this Bailey money then ?

Sad times when we can't compete financially with Motherwell.
  • A real shame, after a long wait, we got a glimpse of what he is capable of at the end of last season and mosy liked what we saw. That said, if we can now keep Elliot I'd be delighted, as he is equally a decent keeper. In no way, shape or form should Parky be receiving any flak in my opinion. He produced a competitive and challenging side last season on a relative shoestring and I hope we can keep him and the Board supply him with sufficient resources to try and do the same next season. If he doesn't receive the Board's backing to any degree financially, I know where my frustrations will lie. That said we have done some sensible release and sales business so far this summer, so hope this frees Parky up to re-mould a side.

Yes we possibly did, but if Randolph wanted to go & Elliot wanted to stay, what would you have done ? Randolph refused to sign a new contract that was offered. Would you have offered him more than we could afford to pay & guarantee him 1st spot ? There is possibly not a lot to choose between them.
Regretfully, Randolph chose to move on & there's bugger all we could do about it, unless we did as stated above.
  • Even if they offered me £50k a week I wouldn't want to live in Motherwell, the place is an absolute tip.
  • Didnt think there was much to choose between the both of our keepers and Robbie is probaly the cheeper option.

And of course Robbie is a Charlton fan!
