Parky - Several deals lined up

  • I thought I'd read yesterday that Charlton wouldn't allow Bailey to commence training with Boro until the deal was completed?
  • Or we may have asked for it to not be officially finished as agents and clubs may look for more from us when they know we have that money
  • Surely Christian Dailly should have given a new contract by now
  • in the rumours thread he's off to Kilmarnock

I believe an offer has been made to him, depends how much we have offered him though. If Randolph is anything to go by don't hold out much hope of him signing either.
  • Can't see Dailly going to Kilmarnock.

When he signed last year he spoke about Charlton being close to his Chelmsford home and his family being a major reason for signing, so unless Colchester have made a better offer , then I can't see him moving if we gave him a half decent contract.

Boss - plans are in place

There's a 'lot of work to be done', but Charlton boss Phil Parkinson has assured fans that the Addicks have plans in place to push the club forward.

A series of departures and the culmination of last term's loan deals meant it was a somewhat depleted Addicks squad which reported to Sparrows Lane on Thursday ahead of the start of pre-season training on Monday.

But, despite several other players also being out of contract, Parkinson is confident that new faces will be arriving at the club in the near future.

He told the official website: "Looking at the current squad, there's a lot of work to be done, but we're fully prepared to do it.

"We've still got some good players. The likes of Frazer Richardson and Jose Semedo walked back in on Thursday morning, and they want to see the club having a real go at getting promotion and having a successful season. We need to build a squad to take the club forward and I know the supporters will be looking for positive news.

"I think everyone knows the financial situation. I haven't really been in a position over the summer to improve the squad or finalise the futures of out-of-contract players. But we know what needs to be done, and we know that it needs to be done sooner rather than later.”

Leon McKenzie, Matt Spring, Chris Dickson, Dean Sinclair and Jack Clark all left The Valley following the expiry of their contracts at the end of June, while Tony Warner's short-term move and the loan deals for Dave Mooney, Kyel Reid, Matt Fry, Gary Borrowdale and Nicky Forster also expired in May.

In addition, Yassin Moutaouakil had his contract terminated by mutual consent, Jonjo Shelvey was signed by Premier League side Liverpool, Nicky Bailey looks likely to move to Championship club Middlesbrough and out-of-contract goalkeeper Darren Randolph opted to sign for Scottish Premier League outfit Motherwell on Thursday.

But Parkinson has spent the summer talking to a host of players, and a number of trialists are expected at Sparrows Lane next week.

"I've been speaking to many players over the summer,” said Phil. "Of course, given the current situation, it's difficult to finalise things. But the board is fully aware of the need to get a team out on the pitch which our supporters deserve.”

After being in the League One promotion places for a large chunk of last term, the Addicks were a penalty shoot-out away from the play-off final at Wembley, and Parkinson continued: "I don't think the division will be as strong this year, but equally I've got to make the squad as competitive.

"We were one win off getting promotion last season and if I can make this squad competitive, we're going to have a great chance of going again. No one was more disappointed than the rest of the staff and I that we didn't make it, but we've got to dust ourselves down, roll our sleeves up and take the challenge full on. That's what I intend to do.”

Bailey is poised to join Boro after the 26-year-old midfielder, who hit 13 goals for the Addicks last season, discussed a deal to head to the Riverside Stadium last week, before undergoing a medical on Monday.

"It's been well reported that Nicky's sale to Middlesbrough is imminent and we wish him all the best,” stated Parkinson. "He's done exceptionally well for us over the last two years. No manager likes to lose their best players or their captain, but I understand the financial reasons for the deal.

"Nicky's been first class for us. It wasn't a case of trying to talk him into staying, it was more a case of the club needing this money. I believe the money we've raised from the two deals for Nicky and Jonjo is exceptionally good in the current climate, and I don't feel there are too many other squads in this division which could have generated that kind of money.

"I realise, though, that these are difficult times, so we need to pull together and come out the other side of it with the football club in a sustainable position.”
  • From the OS report, my favourite bit is the sentence about Richardson and Semedo wanting the club to have a real go at Promotion.

As for deals lined uo, Liam Chilvers is still available and after Parky expressing an interest (so more than a plain rumour), he could be the first.
  • I suppose that's one positive thing, while Dailly, Sam etc haven't made up their mind, neither will have plenty of players at other clubs.
  • anyone else get the impression Richardson and Semedo were the only two players at training, having a game of to me, to you....

wembley singles or headers and volleys!
  • Three and in...
  • Interesting to see that neil mellor has gone on loan to sheffield wednesday. For someone who was part of a champions league winning side 5 years ago, he has had quite a fall. I know he has had injuries, but he could do very well in League 1.
  • [cite]Posted By: CafcAndy[/cite]Im guessing he has about 800,000 of that to spend. Look forward to another season of free transfers and Loans.

you will be lucky if he has 100k of that to spend

anybody coming in will be free or on loan
  • For a skint side, Sheff Weds have signed a lot of players and many of them could do very well at this level....

Neil Mellor is a very good player (a natural finisher), but has been plagued by injuries and an irresistible attraction to pies.

As for our budget this season...I would have thought that £800K was wildly optimistic! We will be shopping in the bargain bins of the lower leagues this summer, as far as I can see!

haha funniest post I've read in ages......he'll be lucky to get a penny of it to spend.
  • doubt we'll spend a penny on fees.
  • This was just emailed to me. Taken from another message board I think so no idea who the original poster is or how true it is. Dated today so the meeting would have been yesterday.

I can guess who the other director is ; - )

I met Phil In The Bulls Head in Chislehurst last night. I must say my views on the man have changed significantly. He was in the middle of a meeting with Steve Waggot (He's lost a lot of weight!) and another director who I recognise but I can't for the life of me remember his name.

Whilst they were having their meeting they let me come in and ask them questions and Phil was perfectly open and honest with what he said which is a change from when I met Pardew a couple of years ago.

I only got to ask a few questions because I had to leave but the first question I asked was about the budget which was finalised yesterday in a board meeting, and he said that the signings will be coming soon which is promising!

The second question I asked was about his persistence in playing Bailey on the left. This was the one question where I thought he was the most honest and said he thought with Racon Semedo in the midfield he had to push Bailey out on the left, as the centre midfield partnership complimented each other so well.

A couple of other things is that Nicky Bailey has definitely gone they're just completing a few things. Gary Doherty has definitely signed on a two year contract. Sam Sodje unfortunately has gone, which I'm very disappointed about. When I asked whether it was because he wanted rid of him or Sam wanted to leave the club anyway he replied with "a bit of both".

The last point is that I mentioned to him that we should go all out and get Johnnie Jackson and Kyel Reid. Both are on his list which again is promising.

    Parkinson IN!

I've got to say, I love reading gossipy posts like this ......... a little glimpse into a Charlton world behind the scenes.
Even if it might not be true.

    :o)
  • Maybe, but I don't think Sodje & Bailey going and Parky trying to sign Reid & Jackson is unlikely at all. I suppose anyone could have made that up though, none of it would be a surprise.
  • what concerns me is he thinks Racon and Semedo make a good pairing, sheeeeeiiiiiiitttteeee....
  • I cant believe someone would have the bowl over and talk to three people when its quite clear they were having a private discussion and ask why he played bailey on the left and what our budget was? I know i wouldnt anyway but perhaps some other would.
