PHIL Parkinson hopes the impending sale of captain Nicky Bailey will finally enable him to start rebuilding his Charlton squad.
The Addicks manager has been in talks with a host of targets throughout the summer but financial difficulties at the club have prevented him from pushing through any deals.
That means Parkinson began pre-season training today with just 10 contracted senior players. Two of those, the injured Izale McLeod and Stuart Fleetwood, have been loaned out on several occasions and their futures at The Valley look particularly uncertain.
That leaves Parkinson struggling to name a side containing 11 recognised players for their first pre-season game, against AFC Wimbledon in two weeks’ time. He may have to call on youngsters Alex Stavrinou, Yado Mambo and Tamer Tuna to complement a squad currently featuring only Rob Elliot, Frazer Richardson, Kelly Youga, Miguel Llera, Chris Solly, Jose Semedo, Therry Racon, Akpo Sodje, Fleetwood and McLeod.
But the sale of Bailey, who is due to join Middlesbrough in a £1.4million deal, could finally allow the manager to start recruiting some of his key targets.
“No one likes to lose their best players and it will be disappointing if Nicky goes,” said Parkinson. “He’s been outstanding for the club over the last couple of years but this is purely a financial decision which brings in much-needed revenue.
“I’ve been working extremely hard all summer to line up as many deals as possible but I haven’t yet been in a position to push them through.
“I’m hoping now that, with Nicky’s transfer almost complete, we will be able to start rebuilding the squad. We owe it to our loyal supporters to put a team out on the pitch which will be competitive.
“I’m worried that the longer we leave it, the more quality players we’ll lose out on.
“I’ve got several deals on the table but I need to be able to push them over the finishing line.”
Saw yesterday (I think) that Bailey's deal might not go through until early next week. Hopefully this time next week a few more players would have signed new deals and we'll have a signing or two.

“I’ve got several deals on the table but I need to be able to push them over the finishing line.” - same problem Parky had this time last season.
There are literally hundreds of players out there who are either out of contract and/or been released by their clubs. Budgets will determine who gets first dibs, but there will be an enormous amount of "who blinks first" in the negotiations. May actually be the first season in a long time where the players are as equally nervous as the clubs.
When you sell your house you don’t wait to get the cash in the bank before looking to buy another property – you do the two deals together !!
Boro chairman/CEO out of the country.
He may want to get the deals tied up, but until what the players agents want and what the club can afford meet, he'll be kept waiting.
I can't see many deals being tied up in early July, but there will probably be a rush towards the end of the month and early August as the reality of what League 1 clubs can now realistically afford hits home. We won't get the cream, but there will still be plenty of value to be had as the season approaches.
I doubt very much that any of the players we are talking to will command a fee, so we don't actually need a wedge of money at this stage - and we KNOW that Bailey is going, so I still can't see why there is a delay.
;-)
Bailey is going, but if we're very unlucky and it falls through for some reason, we'd had to adjust the budget.
If you are offered something today for £30 that you believe is worth £15, that you think you'll be able to get for £15 in a few weeks time, do you go ahead and buy it now anyhow ?
Maybe Bailey isn't the only sale the board are hoping for? Could be some more of our players have been targeted, if so, that will adjust the boards budget, and impact further on who we can get, and what they can or are willing to pay for them..
......... and then your mate will be able to have two similar of what you have in a few weeks time ) in League 1 it is unlikely there will only be one of them.
on the presumption that the budget for this season will be the same as last season.
which it isn't.
In reality, it has probably been halved.
Ditto
Who2?
Or did we agree a settlement payment with him?
if a player really wants to come here and they have guarantees that a contract offer is on it's way, then they'll wait rather than signing up with someone else- so in a way at least we know the ones do we get really want to play for us.
... just trying to look for the silver-lining.
wonder what players they are. reckon Liam Chilvers is one.

Not down to Parkie, it will be down to the board.
We let him go, think we may have agreed part settlement
Golfie, do you think Parkinson or the board are really sitting there saying, "Wow, from all the reduced wages we've got some spare cash, shall we sign some players? Nah, let's just sit on it all just to piss off those on CL."
Large, can I buy your house off you? Do you mind moving out and letting me move in before a few weeks before the contracts are signed? Come on, it's a done deal.
If it was your club wouldn't you want to be SEEN to be doing something - bringing in players or at least being linked to some, for example.
It seems the club is doing the opposite and doing their utmost to do nothing at all
Now I realise why the last CAFC survey was asking about my belief in Father Christmas and the tooth fairy. They really know who to mug off those clever guys in the boardroom.
