  • [cite]Posted By: Leroy Ambrose[/cite]'Grow up' is aimed at everyone who thinks that there is any seed of truth in all this Daily Mail-esque bollocks. You need to have the intelligence of a cruet set to give any of it one iota of credence.

You just can't stop hurling insults can you?
  • Only when they're deserved. If you don't want to be considered daft, don't say daft things
  • And daft is anything you don't like, yes? Anything that might be at variance with your opinions? Because let's face it most who think themselves liberal actually do make the greatest fascists.
  • I was forced to take down my German flag outside the house. Typical looney left policemen.

Putting up my Argentinan flag now.

AND there are England flags all over the place. :(

    Multiculturalism? Yeah right.
  • [cite]Posted By: Daggs[/cite] Well, yes! At least prior to this subject being aired on the BBC, it would have been yes.

Have you a copy of the minutes of the council meeting where this was decided?

    Thought not...

Daily Mail crap as others have said.
  • Where's Leroy?

I've got the armchair, the popcorn and beer. Now I'm waiting for the show to resume.

No - 'daft' (in this case anyway) is being stupid enough to continue to perpetuate some misguided and thinly-veiled xenophobia when it has been proven to be utter, utter bollocks. None of it has a grain of truth to it - all 'examples' have been proven to be either 'guidance' issued by a local police force (and, believe me, living less than 500 yards away from the scene of the lunacy last time it happened, I can perfectly understand why the local constabulary in question suggested local landlords banned ALL football fans from their boozers when England were playing) or the demented scribblings of a journalist who probably believes the very fabric of society is at risk from people who don't tuck into a full English breakfast every day, like morris dancing or worship in the Anglican church.
  • Our kid has gone to school today dressed in red and white (normal uniform blue and black). All the kids have been asked to wear these colours in support of England. England shirts are positively encouraged and they're showing the match on a big screen in the hall, in case any of the kids can't get home in time to see it.
  • Yes wifes school is doing the same

Maybe at last all this PC bol**cks is over and comon sense is coming back into fashion, here's hoping

  • I guess all that "you wont be allowed to display your support for England" stuff turned out to be complete rubbish. I work in Holborn and both that part of London and Eltham are awash with St Georges flags.

    It always was complete rubbish.

The council here has a massive St Georges flag covering the front of the council building.

In Ireland ? How sporting of them !!
  • Ireland?

    No. Nottingham.
  • So far for England's World Cup games I was in O'Neil's Kingston for the USA game was in there for Five hours before the match & the match itself when we were welcome to spend as much money as possible, but as soon as the game finished everyone wearing an England shirt was asked to leave the premises.

Last Friday's game I watched at the Saucy kettle in Surbiton big signs up saying NO shirts or England Flags allowed, truly sad. Today I'll probably watch it in the bar downstairs here at Shephered Neame, I wonder if I'll be asked to remove my St George tie ?
  • i wonder what the atmosphere will be like if we go out( god forbid!) .... will everyone slip off quietly and go along on their way ... probably best, if we do go out, for it to happen midweek rather than a saturday night when all the hard men will have to take their frustration out on windows and dustbins etc ......
  • Dover Council have refused to allow the England game to be shown on screens apparently.

Or Dover Council have decided that closing off the town centre in the middle of the day is not such a smart move in a recession.

Still I'm sure the ban doesn't extend to pubs or private houses so no real hardship.

Apparently they were originally going to show all England games on the screens but as the French have not enjoyed a successful World Cup and a lot of French people visit Dover there is, allegedly, concern that an overt celebration of Englishness would be insensitive and could lead to a breach of the peace.

As you say it is being "spun" that closing areas of the town in a recession is not a good idea as it would not be good PR to say that English people are not allowed to watch their team in public because of the French.

Which version is correct? Who knows! You decide!

The indisputable fact though is that the England game will not be shown in Dover.
  • What a load of bullshit Len

Go into any pub or return to your home and there it will be.
  • My local have banned all club shirts throughout the World Cup and will refuse to serve you if wearing one. However, any national shirt is acceptable. So I could have walked in today wearing a Slovenia shirt and got served, but if I had been wearing a Charlton shirt they could have refused to serve me. Work that one out.
  • Apparently the England game is being BANNED in my hometown (Crowborough)

You could say it's because Crowborough is a smallish town and it's not worth the bother of erecting a big screen (plus people watch it in pubs or at home), but I reckon it's because of the French

Well I guess it's anticipating trouble. It's only for an England game that Liverpool/United or Arsenal/Spurs fans will cluster together in a pub, and they don't want that to become an issue. And it won't be as long as people wear England rather than club shirts. The national shirt thing is slightly strange, but honestly, how many Slovenia fans do you expect to be knocking around English pubs?

I suppose the fear is that club rivalries will create more tension than national ones, whether they are using the right tactics or not they are trying to reduce the amount of trouble they have to deal with and you can't blame them for that, however any particular tactic is mis guided.
