[cite]Posted By: mid_life_crisis[/cite]Colchester are an absolute rough-house team - typical Aidy Boothroyd.
The incident with the handball in our box in the last 10 mins: I was miles away, but when I saw it I instinctively thought it was a penalty.
Credit to Charlton for standing up to ultra-physical approach of the visitors.
Our supporters were excellent.
I'm pretty sure it was their players hand who handballed it.
Excellent win. Everyone put a shift in and stood up to the physical stuff. Colchester were a truly horrible team to watch. Dailly and semedo were stand outs for me. Very nervy last 10.
Akpo does my head in, he has all the attributes to be a top strong target man yet my mum can jump higher than him.. burton back for Saturday would be awsome with forster. Impressed with defence yesterday, daily richardson borrowdale all excelent. Sam as fustraiting as usual if only he crossed like the goal more often we would be top of the league, was sat right behind the cross in west lower and it was a peach. More of that sam!!! Forster could well be our new mendonca he tried a mendonca esque flick up and turn but just got beaten by a defender, baileys long range free kicks were woeful would like to see borowdale whip them in. Randolph was so lucky at the end again had a perfect view and the guy missed an open goal with that last effort on our goal. To sum up a blinding hard fought win, atmosphere was fantastic especially at then end when that tackle went in on waggstaff by our dugout, norwich will be more passing and nice football and parky reckons that's are strongest game style so bring it on!!!
E I e I e I o.....
One downer, was in west lower block g, 4 muppets sat next to me and the mrs, booing lera everytime he came out to warm up you could see he was puzzled, I shouted a nice little phase to him in spanish, the muppets looked baffled, we found some different seats at halftime as couldn't do another 45 sat next to them. Pls don't come back lads your not needed, go to the den and be as nasty as you want there.
Also, colchester have to be the biggest moaners and whingers in football, they were constantly giving the ref and lino stick I'm amazed only lisbie went off, there penatly appeal was a joke there player handled it had same view as the lino! Boothroyd should have been sent to the stands after he was swearing at the lino.
I thought Col U looked quick and hostile but tried to play football until Platt came on then everything was hoofed. Also any niggle in the game started when that pratt with the "Batti Gol" hair pulled off one of the worst dives I have ever seen! Sodj and Dailly, helped on occasion by Semedo, then started giving him abuse at every opportunity.
Oh and as for the challenge on Waggy, it was either their throw or or our freekick. He did not get the ball as Waggy flicked it past him and he got their a second too late and therefore it was a foul. But what made it worse you could see what was coming the bloke was not really watching the ball and the frustratio was clear in his face
Good game and atmosphere and it looks like being exciting ( and anxious probably) weeks ahead. We look generally more solid and effective than we have done for a while. While we did not create that many chances I felt we imposed ourselves on the game, handled what Colchester tried to dish out, we were generally more composed at the back, and I think we deserved the win. Norwich and Leeds will be cracking games.
Didn't go so unsure whether im allowed to post in here? but just wanted to say i'm pleased with the result, reckon well win saturday and if we can win our remaining games i reckon we can snatch second place! although easier said then done but i believe we can do it, come on you addicks!
Well done to the players! Played their socks off & good to see that the only real bit of quality football led to the goal. Would love to see a stat regarding how long the ball actually spent on the pitch. Awful football from Colchester, think they're playing panic dirty football, yuk! Worst bit of last night.....Big Dave, what in gawds name was that at the end? Out done by not one but two ball boys? The shame!!!!!!
Well done Addick supporters!!!! More of the same Saturday please.......from supporters & players alike!
David Prutton was bloody annoying. Tried to act the hardman by barging into Randolph every time he made a claim/save, then did an horrendous dive on the edge of the area which should have been punished by a yellow card.
Couldn't understand why the referee was very strict about where we took our free kicks and throws, yet Colchester were allowed to gain in excess of 5 yards for almost every one. That free kick after about 75 minutes must've been taken over 10 yards further forward - Randolph had to make a decent save. He didn't take any crap from their players though; some of the free kicks were a bit soft but he booked a few for dissent.
A great win. Shame about the last minute goals for Millwall and Huddersfield, but am now quietly confident we can give Norwich a good game on Saturday.
Im not as convinced as some others on here, but then sometimes i can be over critical. Firstly, let me just say it was a very much needed and deserved three points. Atmosphere was pretty good, although a little flat 10 mins leading up to half time, but then so was the game at that point.
Performance wise i thought defensively we were very good. Dailly and Sodje particular highlights.....Sodje coming across to make the challenge in the last 5 minutes did enough to force their player to blaze over. Raw pace and power from big Sam.
Wasnt a game for midfielders as the ball must have touched the ground 3 times in 90 minutes. Semedo played well, picking up pieces and making some good challenges. Bailey has to start in the middle over Therry 'too many touches' Racon. Lloyds Sam played well in patches...see what happens when you attack the defenders down the outside and get a cross in!!!!
Forster still impresses me. I cant be having Akpo tho, doesnt win a header and is so flat footed its untrue. Unlucky with his strike though.
Thought Colchester were a bad side.....there full backs were atrocious. Obviously really happy with the 3 points but still not overly happy with the performance. Just a shame that we resorted to their head tennis tactics at times, when we have the quailty to get the ball down. I will say we got stuck in when it mattered and werent bullied out of it.
Still dont understand why Kyle Reid sits unused on the bench.
Positives : We lost 3-0 at their place and got bullied. Last night we didn't. Semedo was fantastic. Back four all did well - Borrowdale improves with each game and although it looks like he can't run, tackle or head, he seems to do all of them ok somehow and his passing is actually better than first appearance too.
Dailly and Sodje looked far more secure after the first 10 minutes and as a team we played with some pace, aggression and Lloyd Sam actually caused some trouble - went to the byeline, cut inside and had shots.
Hoolahan and Holt out on Saturday - that will be MASSIVE for us.
Forster looked good with a strike partner and the man will score goals - he'll score another couple before the normal season is out and goals are vital right now.
Negatives:
Not sure why we don't play our left winger - I've been impressed with him and at home we should stretch the play and attack sides - especially on Saturday.
Racon - thought he was decent first half but as soon as he went out wide, he showed no interest at all and it's a team game and we have to have players who will play anywhere at anytime!
Leeds - they appear to be back in form and even if we beat them I'm concerned it's going to come down to goal difference and their's is so much better than ours!
A solid win against an ugly brute force. Colchester are what this division is all about and Charlton were a match for it which in my opinion is a very good sign tho it was not deemed Brazil enough for some! I say well done to the boys and roll on Norwich!
I'm not sure Hoolahan is definitely out. Looking at the Norwich site and Lambert's comments before last night he was saying that he was unsure on Hoolahan and he'd give him until the last minute to decide if he was ok. He obviously wasn't ok as he didn't play but he might be ok with an extra 3 days treatment.

That's just the same way Boothroyd set up Watford to play a few seasons ago.
Not forgetting the over-physical rough-house stuff.

Yup, that says if for me as well.
Moaning, spiteful, dirty side ... and we stood up to it and won.

But their 30-goal striker Holt is definitely suspended.
I like Mooney and I think it's right and proper to take the ball to the corner flag in the final minute of a game but maybe Dave isn't the player to do it.
seen so many teams have 2, even 3, players chasing down our man on the ball everytime at the valley, was great to see us doing it to the opposition and what a positive effect it had. where we lacked a bit of quality at times we made up for it with fight and that's how we have to finish the season.
i don't think we're one of the two best teams in this league and i predict the table will finish how it stands now. i'm confident we can beat millwall at wembley playing the way we did last night.
Interesting outcome; Colchester were the last team who had any chance of doing the double over us this season. They failed. Going through a season with no-one doing the double over us is a pretty rare occurrence - anybody know the last time this happened?
Last night, I enjoyed the game (mind you it had to be a win) more than most games I've seen this season, despite Colchester's football, because we had some fight in us and this augurs well for the battles we may face in the playoffs. Have been debating player of the year with my son. He made a good case for Richardson; I'm veering towards Dailly but I think it's worth bearing in mind the overall contribution of "our" Robbie Elliot.
What happened when Randolph spilled the ball in the last seconds? From where i was in the West it looked like he'd been poleaxed after he had control of the ball. Did anyone get a good view?
Colchester were ugly, cynical, and at times genuinely dirty, as exemplified by the full backs. Prutton isn't half the player he thinks he is, despite David Platt regularly preferring him to Scott Parker for England U-21s. Thoroughly unpleasant side with a manager who plays purely on the percentages.
Anyway, on to us... great to see us stand up to it all, and it helped spur on the vg support. It actually felt like a play-off leg; niggly, tense, and hard-fought in a good atmosphere. Another clean sheet - one conceded in four is nice form to take into the play-offs that still realistically appear most likely (let's just hope it doesn't mean watching Colchester again).
Forster (with decent support) is clever enough to pinch another couple of vital goals. Alongside a fit Deon, he should also be able to help ensure that the ball stays forward when defending gets hectic like last night - just like dribbling into a corner, if the ball's not in our half, it can't hurt us. Whilst Akpo largely failed to win headers, Forster managed to steal in a few times and nick the ball before any of the lumps got there, either gaining direct posession or earning an inevitable free kick (one indirectly led to the goal he finished himself). Sometimes just getting there first is enough, regardless of physical presence.
With it likely to be a lot more open and less physical v Norwich, perhaps Bailey can slot back inside, allowing Reid back on the left? Semedo's currently playing the anchor man role well so if Bailey pushes on with more purpose than Racon, coupled with 2 wingers it might add to our still somewhat limited goal threat. How's Deon coming along?
Special mention for Dailly - thought he was outstanding last night; brave leadership without losing it and getting sent off despite more than one challenge that upset him.
And finally... well done Waggy for not responding to the thug that sent him into the ads. No writhing around to get him sent off. He didn't even give him the satisfaction of seeing how hurt he undoubtedly was.
Just out of interest, anybody know who their right back was, number 25? ......Porbably the worst player ive seen at the Valley this year. I think even Wycombe's fat little full back at their place was better than him.
Comments

Roll on Saturday

thought we were excellent, couldn't fault any of them.
Subs were strange, we played 3 players on the left last night and still had a natural left winger sitting on the bench!
all in all though a good nights work, can't wait for saturday now..
Well done Addick supporters!!!! More of the same Saturday please.......from supporters & players alike!

Hoola and Holt missing Saturday could be the key
also loved the slow rendition of 'we are charlton' last night
Dont understand any negativity, we ARE going to be 2nd
Getting a bit like Alan Curbishley's team of 1998 ......!
That's just the same way Boothroyd set up Watford to play a few seasons ago.

It sounded excellent, the crowd sounded fantastic loads of songs, plenty of atmosphere, just what we need for the run in, UNITY!!!
Parkinson has us grinding out wins, which is exactly what we need now...
I beleive we can get up automatic, yet it feels like its written in the stars that we will paly Millwall at wembley......
If we do go up I will definately try to get back to London, New Wembley is just too much to miss.....
i don't think we're one of the two best teams in this league and i predict the table will finish how it stands now. i'm confident we can beat millwall at wembley playing the way we did last night.

Any crowd under 25,000 for the last two games will be dissapointing in my opinion
