David whyte - a great player for the few seasons he appeared for us. I remember buying a David "WHYTE WHYTE WHYTE" jersey. We paid 450k for his services, he went on to score a 20+ goal season for us and then we let him go to Reading on a free bee and he never played a game for Reading. He only played 19 more league games after he left Charlton. Charlton let him go because of drug abuse.

- after all I scored the fastest goal in Football League history for Charlton - something that never gets mentioned.
Which game was that, Jimmy?
I'd always thought it was Willo's 1st minute goal when we won 3-1 away at West Ham.
Great video Charlton_hero. Think that would be awesome played on the big screen at 2.45 every Sat. Would certainly motivate the crowd more than generic chart music. Can BDL or Airman help to get it shown? I guess there could be copyright issues. One suggestion, particularly if it does get put on the jumbotron-can you add a couple of current players on the end? A Burton goal perhaps, or a S Sodje header? Great stuff though mate

First time I've heard of the drug abuse allegation.....I know he lived in a weired religious commune(or such like) in Catford at the time.....but drugs that's a new one on me....are you sure?
Sadly, he did have some mental health problems though.
A nice lad with a huge talent which sadly never really developed to it's full potential.
I can vividly remember that goal against Leicester. They brought thousands down and had to walk them across the pitch pre kick off to get to the chicken run. Who got the other goal that day? jon hendry ?

I must have had far too many that day, doesn't look like the Upton Park I remember!

Bloody hell Oggy. Surely you know it was Jimmy Melrose who scored after 9 seconds at Upton Park? Walshie and John Pearson scored the others. That was my first ever away game - absolutely loved it!
Willo scored in the other 3-1 win a few years later. Think he got two and there was a freak own goal (Stewart Robson?)
Great, great moments. Colin Powell has to be another one on any follow-up. Probably the greatest winger ever to play in a Charlton shirt (worth the attendance fee alone) and never to play for England. Where would 'Killer' have been without 'Paddy'? Scored a few crackers as well in his time.
[cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]I seem to remember Morts scoring a stunner from an acute angle at Leeds in our first Prem season, 98-99.
Possibly my favourite ever Charlton goal (pity we were 4-0 down at the time).
The best thing about it was the way he took it down from the thrown in and beat the defender in a similar fashion to the Bergkamp goal up at Newcastle. Sadly the camera angle didn't quite catch it.
I had the honour of reffing a game with Morts playing for the vets. Watching his skills close up was spellbinding.
i think plenty of people forget old morts because he left before we established ourselves in the prem. i grew up watching him the mid 90s and i loved the bloke. remember a great goal in a superb 3-2 home win over wolves in 94/95. he was such a gent as well, always smiling and so intelligent, used to have such inciteful post match interviews. he was a cracking penalty taker as well, i think he slipped in the rain for that one against leeds.
i saw him play a couple of years ago in a charlton vets game down at tonbridge angels, him and nelse were in the side amongst others - although he was extremely unfit, you could still see the class oozing out of him - if i remember rightly he scored a left rocket from outside the box, made it so worth turning up!
that video also makes me want to cry, what i would do to have players like mortimer back in the side, stand-up humans who cared about charlton. keith jones was another excellent hardworker who doesnt often get a mention.

And mine too, Dabos ...... everybody seemed to know that we weren't going to get out of it, when the ball rebounded from the post.
Finished 1-1. We murdered Leeds that game, but the gods were against us that day.
That game also featured Graham Stuart's first goal for us, Richard Rufus being sent off for accidentally treading on one of their players, and a brilliant Martin Pringle dive. I'm going to claim Leed's problems all started because of the outrageous luck they got in this game.
Stuart's first goal for us was away at West Ham in the 1-0 win
Morts scored an absolute peach against Bradford at the Valley in our first promotion season as well - I believe it may well have been the same game that Brownie scored that cracker in that was shown on the vid.
Great video, some awesome memories there. Anyone know if Melrose's goal against Wet Spam after nine seconds is on tape anywhere?
