Welcome to New York based on the Dominic Strauss-Kahn business in New York. Well bloody hell if that is even 25% based on reality, well. But totally fails to explain how a man with such habits and appetites actually managed to function as a brilliant head of the IMF. Enjoyable but dodgy
Northern Soul Lightweight but likeable, Billy Elliot sort-of film, but not as good. Nice period detail.
Meant to Sky Plus Northern Soul but forgot & only caught the last hour or so. Liked what we saw especially the music.
Watched 'The Selfish Giant' the other night. Thought it was excellent - very touching and brilliant direction and acting from the kids in it. Bleak though. Really, really bleak.
Also went to see Interstellar. Didn't grasp all the science (I took A-Level Physics and Relativity was where I hit my invisible ceiling), but it looks fantastic and has a good human story at its heart. If you're thinking of watching it I would highly recommend doing so in a cinema - bigger the better. I suspect it will seriously lose something on a TV, even if you have one of those flat screen jumbotrons.
This is a fascinated film about the mixed martial artist , Georges St. Pierre. It follows a few years of his career and documents his training , his injuries and the brutal fights that take place. What i know about UFC you can put on the back of a postage stamp but that didn't stop me enjoying this very well made documentary.
As the years have passed by there have been less and less World War II movies made which is a shame in my opinion. I used to love these films as a kid and effectively , Fury is just like one of those war films i used to watch back in the 70's but with stronger language and ramped up gore. Really good performances from Shia LaBeouf ( yes i know! ) and Logan Lerman and Brad Pitt is , well , Brad Pitt . Sure , it's predictable , even up to the order of the characters that bite the bullet but i enjoyed it a lot.
Just back from free preview screening of Whiplash at local Picturehouse. Highly recommend this one. Fairly conventional set up - talented but raw drummer enrols in top music academy and is pushed and pushed by his tutor. Usual set backs and triumphs occur on his way to eventual breaking point, but the film continues after this to a very well handled conclusion. No spoilers, but School of Rock it isnt.
A very intense film, with lots of emphasis on spectacularly tight and closely shot musical scenes. Not my sort of music, but that doesn't matter. The two leads are excellent and JK Simmons performance is at least worthy of an oscar nomination. I thought this film would be predictable with a hollywood happy ending, but it takes a slightly different route and all the better for that. Distribution may not be that wide, but if it comes to a cinema near you, see it. 9/10. rottentomatoes.com/m/whiplash_2014/
I quite liked Fury but I thought it could have been better. Wonderfully shot and good performances but I just felt the story was all a bit same old, at times it showed how bleak war is but others it was just a war film that's been done hundreds of times before. Interesting that David Ayer is doing Suicide Squad, given what he has done with Fury and End of Watch it should be good.
I watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles last night. Actually enjoyed it, I feel some of the criticism it got was very harsh and those that did criticise it probably did so going in to watch the film with their minds made up (Bay produced, Megan Fox etc.).Thought some of the action scenes were well done and I had a couple of chuckles during it.
Some superb individual performances from Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts are not enough to make this film anything other than slightly above average. Why Ewan McGregor keeps getting roles in big films is beyond me. He yet again stunk the place out.

Saw that in a cinema in Marseille back in February.
As you say, great acting from the youngsters - but God, was it grim.

Saw Fury the other night loved it up until after the battle with the tiger, really realistic and gripping up to that point. Felt it tailed off after that with a very predictable last 15/20mins
Anyone been to see the latest Lord of the rings film yet?
If so what were your marks out of 10, and how does it stack up against the other films in the series.
Watched it last night. I'd say 6/7 out of ten. It was better than the first Hobbit, but not as good as the second. The sweeping views of New Zealand as stunning as the previous five films. Felt it was a poor script this one, gags and one liners felt very forced.
Stonehearst Asylum 7/10 A movie that is worth watching but left me with a feeling it should have been better. Fury 7.5/10 Took .5 off score just for the ending. Were the Germans that stupid? Gone Girl 8/10 Decent movie but I wouldn't call the ending satisfying.
Hope its as good as the first one. Jennifer Aniston was bloody sensational in that. Ahem.
HB1 was possibly the worst most contrived and unfunny film I have ever had the misfortune to waste my time watching - close run thing between that and Death at a Funeral. And Jennifer Aniston reminds me more than somewhat of my sister so even watching her in her underwear does not save the film for me.
Jimmy's Hall is a Ken Loach film and he's not a director i'm particularly familiar with. I know a few decades ago he had a good reputation but if this film is anything to go by he seems to have lost what he once had and that's the ability to tell a story and make it interesting. This film takes "Old Fashioned " to new levels . The story is so incredibly dull and the acting by some of the cast is appalling. Loach has failed with this film on so many levels. Avoid.

Good shot Idle, thought I was the only one who thought it was total shite. Lots of people told me how great it was - shocking effort!!

More or less agree with this. Script is so cliche-ridden, it's gets annoying.
Battle scenes not up to the standard of LOTR.
Overall, it's worth seeing but not as good as it should have been. 6/10
Just caught up with The Act of Killing. One of the most surreal documentaries I have seen. Real members of death squads in Indonesia act out some of their worst acts of violence and murder in brutal detail.
Apologies if I've missed a review on this, but I went to see Big Hero 6 with my 6 year old daughter today. I thought it was great. She was laughing out loud all the way through it and I thought it was funny in places too. It's a bit different from the usual Disney fare, which was welcome, but bearing that in mind, not the most surprising of plot lines, so any twists and 'surprises' weren't too unexpected for me - but my daughter was blown away and that's all that matters to me! I'd recommend it.

Paddington - an enjoyable, charming and gently amusing film, with a bit of a festive feel. Especially good if you have a couple of littlies in tow, although not a pre-requisite.

So, erm, this sister of yours....
If Jennifer Aniston looked in a mirror...at the funfair

Also watched 22 Jump Street last night, very funny. Might sort of American humour so maybe not for everybody.
8/10
Ben Affleck and about a gang of bank robbers.
I thought it was great, not new though

Ben Kingsley, Michael Caine and Kate Beckinsale.
Wont bore you wit a monologue. Best film of 2014.
Thank me later.

I'd recommend it.
