Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

I was never convinced there was any need for a third coming of Planet of The Apes movies and after seeing the Rise of The Planet of the Apes , three years ago , i was even more unconvinced.
This film is better than the first, The Special affects are much more advanced and it's far less schmaltzy than Rise . It's still not great though. While this looks fantastic the story line feels tired and cliched and it's all too predictable. Jason Clarke is good as Malcolm but Gary Oldman is playing the same character he plays in every movie he does.
    Entertaining but not Earth shattering.

    Seve The Movie

Regardless of whether you are a golf fan or not you cannot help but admire the career of and the man that was Severiano Ballesteros. Part acted life story , part documentary . this movie shows the life of charismatic Seve . I wasn't sure if the acted life story part would work but it does and the young Seve played by José Luis Gutiérrez is totally convincing. The archive footage is great to watch but as you would expect last 15 minutes are heart wrenching .

I saw it on a 4k screen and it looked incredible.

    I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Wow 4K cinema screen! Do we have those in this country yet?
  • Almost all cinemas use 4K screens here in the UK
  • Cool didn't know that just suedeadidas made it sound like the yanks have it but we don't
  • Guardians has been film of the year so far for me. Few to catch up on but I can't see anything beating it.

ish. More 2.5k so in between 4k and 2k (aka hd) but there are an increasing number that are 4k now that professional hollywood filmmakers have made the jump to 5k etc.

Guardians of the galaxy is quality - did i mentioned i worked on the movie ;)
  • Do Bexleyheath & Bluewater use 4k on their screens?
  • Concussion

Concussion is a relationship drama that at times is interesting to watch but can also be quite pretentious. Robin Weigert is the star who was brilliant in the HBO drama Deadwood and is good in this too but the world these people are in is so far removed from my own , i found it hard to connect with the characters.

  • Saw Mockingjay last week. Not such a stand alone as the first two, felt very much the lead in to the climactic fourth, which of course it is. Ended very abruptly, to the extent I thought "Oh!". Will watch number 4, but dissuaded a colleague who hasnt seen the first two from seeing it - would make very little sense.
6/10 if you've seen the others, 4 if you havent.
  • The Rover

As films go The Rover is a grim as it gets. That's not to say this is a bad film. Guy Pearce looks old and weary as Eric, the man who will do anything to get his car back but the standout performance is from Robert Pattinson . One thing is for sure that this film won't do anything for the Australian tourist board.

  • @bedsaddick I enjoy your mini film reviews. I know this is a difficult question but of all the films you've seen, which one would you recommend I go and watch ASAP?

The obvious ones for me would be Goodfellas , It's a wonderful life or Momento but i would expect you have seen those so some less obvious films would be.

    The Kite Runner
    The Tree of Life
    Hunger
    Untouchable

There are so many films i could mention but don't forget one man's classic is another man's turkey..

  • Seen Goodfellas and Momento and enjoyed them both. The other three i'll get on with
  • Bad Neighbours

A bit like the " have you ever left a game early" thread , once i have started watching a film i have to see it to the bitter end regardless of how bad it is. I knew 15 minutes into Bad Neighbours it was going to be major struggle but i did it. I don't know how , but i did.
This film was terrible. Full of appalling acting ( especially from Seth Rogen ) , the people involved in this film should be completely ashamed of themselves. Even a 12 year old me would not have found this tosh funny. I laughed once in 92 minutes.

The Rover is in my top five films I've seen at the cinema this year. Thought it was superb. As you say standout performance was Pattinson. The soundtrack is as creepy as a soundtrack can get. Really puts you in your place.

    Dracula Untold

I slightly different slant on the Vampire tale Dracula Untold is an entertaining action ( rather than horror) movie , that reminded me a lot of the Underworld franchise. Although this won't win any awards , both me and my eleven year old son enjoyed it.

  • Guardians of the Galaxy left me a bit flat.

Third Hunger Games, Mockingjay part 1, is OK but not really enough story for a whole film. Pure greed making two films from a slim book.

The Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands is a dramatisation of the 1914/15 naval encounters made in 1927 with real ships borrowed from the Royal Navy. Saw the world premiere of the restored version with a live band. Historically interesting but you could wait to get the DVD (although you wouldn't get the live band!!!).

Me and Mrs Heisenberg went and saw The Drop last week. Tom Hardy again proving what a great actor he is and holding his own with the late James Gandolfini

  • Went to see the Imitation Game on Friday and have to say it's totally brilliant, great acting, gripping story about a real hero who was treated appallingly. Can't recommend enough
  • went to see mr turner because I like mike leigh and timothy spall but what a let down it was awful and so slow!
  • Soul Boys of The Western World

I make no apologies for saying i was a fan of Spandau Ballet. They made it big when i was a teenager , their musical influences were pretty much the same as mine and let's face it , they were cool . This is a brilliant documentary that shows the beginnings of Spandau to the modern day . Some of the previously unseen video of the band is fascinating and brings back some great memories of the early 80's . I understand Spandau Ballet are not everyone's cup of tea but it ticked all the boxes for me and i think whether you're a fan or not you can't help but enjoy this film.

I liked Soul Boys Beds. Was offered the chance to buy it. It's well made, good soundtrack.... BUT... Spandau's story is not sensational enough, new enough or unique. Band gets big, writer keeps his share of royalties, band breaks up, reforms years later when they're broke. Duran Duran were bigger and better. Liked it, didn't love it. The sales to date have been average. I think their fan base is 50+ females and like me, they just don't care enough.... Sorry!

I pretty much agree. I think being a fan helps.( although I don't fit in that 50+ females bracket! ) Duran Duran were bigger when talking about the music and they sold far more records but I think Spandau Ballet were more groundbreaking when it comes to the fashion and New Romantic set up.
I think this was available online ( legitimately) and on DVD just a couple of weeks after the cinema release. What is the thinking regards that?
  • They did a live q and a after the theatrical screening. Think it was the only way to.get cinemas to support the film plus release the DVD in time for Christmas.

More and more live event cinema happens that way. Get your marketing money to work more effectively.
  • Saw Imitation Game last night. Enjoyed it even though Keira is always the same annoying jolly hockey sticks type. Cumberbatch was excellent, can see why oscars have been mentioned. Similarities to his Sherlock character. Whole thing very well done.

    7.5/10

Saw this today. Thought it was brilliant and am not embarrassed to say I had a tear in my eye at the end. How we treat our heroes! Just think what this man could have achieved if he had lived beyond his 41 years. Cumberbatch as you say was excellent.
  • Recently got round to

Welcome to New York based on the Dominic Strauss-Kahn business in New York. Well bloody hell if that is even 25% based on reality, well. But totally fails to explain how a man with such habits and appetites actually managed to function as a brilliant head of the IMF. Enjoyable but dodgy

Northern Soul Lightweight but likeable, Billy Elliot sort-of film, but not as good. Nice period detail.
