  • Sausage Party. Saw it at the cinema last year. Just seen it again on Sky. Brilliant. Should be compulsory viewing every month in all schools in the U.K. Particularly faith schools!

    I thought it was awful!
Me too. If you just watch the trailer you've had a result.
All the funnier bits in a 90 second blast.
  • Gotta say it wasn't nearly as good as I expected. Funny at times, but very hit and miss.
Mind you, I sat through Bridget Jones Baby with Mrs Shabby yesterday, and that is a truely awfull film. Even Mrs Shabby admitted it was dire. Much of Bridget's behaviour was just embarrassing, and the idea of her having two millionaire suitors battling for her favours was about as realistic as Katrien Meire being head hunted to be CEO of Chelsea.
  • On the plane to Florida and watched -

Free Fire - gun deal goes bad in a warehouse. Some funny moments and a decent cast with the usual suspects that turn up in Ben Wheatley flicks.

Arrival - Amy Adams is ace in sci fi drama.

Hell or High Water - Decent modern day western featuring Ben Foster, Chris Pine as the bandits and Jeff Bridges is the grizzled soon to be retiring sheriff.
  • I really liked Free Fire, but I'm a massive Wheatley fan
  • Funny, I'm not much of a Wheatley fan. But I loved Free Fire!

90 seconds right at the end by which time I was almost comatose.

  • Ghost in the Shell

I think it's about time Scarlett Johansson showed us her acting chops if she has any. This is yet another role where she jumps around and acts dumb and she is beginning typecast herself with superhero /sci-fi roles.
I would love to see her do something with a little substance, .
Ghost in the Shell is set in the future in which humans and technology have begun to merge, a cybernetically enhanced soldier hunts a mysterious terrorist who can hack into his victims' minds and control their thoughts and memories. Her pursuit eventually leads her to discover the full truth about her past.

I wasn't surprised to read Ghost in the Shell was adapted from a Japanese Manga series from the 80's as it has that fantastical feel about it. Fantastical not fantastic.
It also has the feel of a video game which is perhaps why it didn't do too much for me. The first 45 minutes bored me silly but thankfully the last hour was much better.
Good special affects and fine performance from underrated actor Pilou Asbæk still won't have me queuing up for any more in what is quite obviously going to be a new franchise.

  • City of Tiny Lights. Noir thriller set in West London. None of the characters quite convinces but it's an enjoyable watch and better than another Mockney monstrosity.

Cheers for the heads up Beds, looks good
  • A minor FYI for you Beds - Manga is comic books. Anime is cartoons!

Ghost in the Shell was anime - and a very, very good one. One of the few that I'd argue works for a wider audience. The biggest issue with the Hollywood movie, for me, was casting Johansson. I'd much rather an unknown playing the part of a girl who doesn't recognise her own face, than a girl famous for being in love with her own face.

Cheers Jimmy. As you can tell what I know about Manga/Anime i could write on the back of a postage stamp!
  • I find it really inaccessible. Especially Akira, which is the daddy of all Anime. I personally don't think Japanese and Chinese stuff works for western audiences (which will frustrate Hollywood as they try to plunder the huge Chinese market with appalling shit like The Great Wall). Korean cinema is strangely more transferable (The Host is better than most Hollywood monster movies).

Both Nightcrawler and Take Shelter are really engaging watches. I do think Gyllenhaal is fantastic. I hear his new film - Southpaw - is really good.

If you see The Pledge on TV or Netflix anywhere, and you haven't seen it obviously, give it a shot. Like Take Shelter it's one of those little-seen hidden gem dramas.

Nightcrawler was in my top 3 of last year. How that film didn't get many nominations during award season is puzzling
Nightcrawler was on last night. First watch for me. Excellent. Petty crook, with social problems, turns his hand to ambulance chasing cameraman selling clips to a news channel with great success.

I like the Akira books but lots of anime is aimed at teens.

Japanese cinema at its best is Ghibli for me.

    Very good
  • Caught Guardians of the Galaxy 2 yesterday. After an initial ten minutes where I dreaded what this film might offer(including a dancing Bonsai) it picked up and was quite entertaining. I' d give it 6 out of ten, but won't be rushing out to see parts 1 or 3.
I also finally saw Inception yesterday, which was on my 'to see' list since it came out. Not a latest film, but I loved it, and was left with a definate wow feeling at the end.

I think if you had seen GotG1 you might have understood it better and given it a higher mark. I would give it a solid 8 I enjoyed it.

I really looking forward to the new Alien film though

You are probably right, and having read Beds comment above, I would have to add that I watched in Spanish, so while the one liners and comedy were what made me enjoy it, they were in Spanish, and then translated back by my head so that I could understand. If I see it on satélite, I'll try GotG 1 in English.
  • Went to see Lady Macbeth yesterday.

Really enjoyed it - in a strange way anyway. You originally have sympathy for her, but she's just an awful person by the end. Loved the way it was shot, the repetition, lack of music and little dialogue. Florence Pugh is meant to be tipped for good things!

I saw further up the thread people didn't even get to the end. it was only 89 minutes long!

Seeing Alien tonight, I shall report back (spoiler free).

Guardians 2 was great fun, I laughed out loud a lot. But I agree with the criticism that it consists of lots of sub-plots and not much more. There wasn't much drive to the plot for some of the movie, which is unusual for a Marvel/ Disney movie. But it's funny/ sweet/ charming enough and the cast are all so likeable it's still worth seeing.

That opening sequence though... we're watching 100% CGI, as was the case for much of the movie. It looked great, but it got me thinking, Hollywood has blurred the lines between Toy Story and Superman. When Roger Rabbit came out, there was huge fuss about how they got Bob Hoskins to act with cartoon creatures. But now we're watching a tiny tree dancing in front of an entirely animated action sequence and not even thinking about it.

I do love that opening scene . The ELO song Mr Blue Sky was a perfect choice .

Agree with what you are saying in general but in Sci Fi films I think the CGI is an important part.

caught the last 45 mins last night. Made me want to cry at the end when the credits rolled & saw the outcomes & the real people involved. It was followed by a film about a Pakistani man who was in the USA on 9/11 & how he was treated afterwards.

    Good sunday night viewing.
