Really enjoyable evening. Parky came across fantastically, highlight was his passionate insistance that no one will stand in the way of the team spirit he's built at the club. Very encouraging. Thanks for putting it on Ben, (good to have made the Bromley FC connection!) and nice to meet you Dazzler.
Had every intention of going but I've been getting home late and dog tired for the last week or so...immensely busy at work right now...........I was out for the count on the sofa by 7.30 and I'm out for an early Christmas drink-up tonight with the old Lewisham crowd in Sundridge Park........some old faces coming in from all over!!
Don't suppose anyone saved me a mince pie.............nah thought not?
My first time at one of these type of events and got to say really enjoyed it. its good to get a better insight of club goings on and Parky is definatly the right man for Charlton in my opinion, a big thumbs up to the organisers, will definatly attend the next one.
Top evening, and thought that Parky was very relaxed and confident. Came over as a manager who had his own ideas and was not prepared to put up with the antics of agents or prima donna footballers who were doing Charlton a favour in playing the club. A refreshing change to hear the man in charge speak to the fans, without having to worry about the pr machine and i thought he came over very well.
Chairing meetings does make it harder to remember all that was said so I'm relying on the other Lifers there to pitch in.
PP got a very good reception at the start and Ollywozere's dad had the privalige of buying him a glass of white wine : - )
Most of the early questions were about players
Asked about moving Bailey inside PP said that he had been very effective out wide last season and this and that the stats on goals per game bear this out. We have a lot of CM so that was the best place for the team. Said NB always does a "disciplined job" for the team PP felt Nick needed something to freshen him up and the team needed to change as other teams had watched us and were making it hard. So Bailey was moved inside.
On the "faking" he disagreed with a fan who said he rolled about like Drogba every game. PP said that Bailey is one of the toughest players in the squad and that he was done. When the fan said that after being injured he was suddendly sprinting up the line PP said that other players would have come off but not Nicky. PP added that when talking to the physio about injuries with other players and how bad they are he asks "Would Nicky Bailey play with it?"
Tuna PP rates and likes his cool finishing. Looking to move out on loan to play "mens" football (possibly in non-league as that is where the interest has come from) "after the FA Youth Cup". PP said that Tuna had has a poor pre-season but had picked up and that was what you expected from a young player.
Shelvey is the same. 17 learning and while Tuna had his ups and downs out of sight Jon Jo's were in the full glare of the first team. PP and JJ both see him as a central midfielder when he gets stronger.
Youga is nearly fit and should be ready for Millwall. PP said that they have worked hard with Kelly to focus on the right things. To be aggressive but not too aggressive, to get forward but not too much and to use his control and skill but not too much or too long. PP said that they also got onto him to be more a part of the team off the pitch ie not finishing training and going but hanging around with the other lads.
Basey: IMHO big change in PPs attitude since his Q & A at the Valley earlier in the year. They see him as a midfielder, has a great left foot and distrubution and he's staying after training to work on his heading and 1-2-1 defending. Asked about pace PP said he hasn't got Youga's athleticism but Kelly doesn't have his left foot.
Burton is a class player who might admit that he has under achieved in his career. Early goals gave him confidence and he is fantastic with his hold up play. Hernia not a problem just manage it in training. PP said that he himself played a whole season with a hernia.
Solly "very good" lots of quality and tough. Just bad luck that both RB got injured in a day of each other.
Omosuzi situation very strange. Not much cash to bet a RB in when both got injured. Omo was due to go to Coventry (Coleman knew him from Fulham) for £300k but Omo didn't make his mind up and the deal fell through which pee'd off Fulham. PP said he has a contract and is being paid by Fulham but had done no pre-season training with them so was unfit and not really ready but a good player we might keep. Can play CH as well.
Players in? Left sided player (he still rates Puncheon) and if possible a youngish CH as agreed that we needed more cover there. Coaching team have already identified 5 or 6 possible players and Phil Chapple has been tasked with contacting all the clubs to see who might be available so they can all discuss next Thursday.
Moo2 - Sort of player who catches the fans eye bombing up the wing but PP said that if you watch him his final ball is poor. Said he's defending and postitional play was also poor. Said you can sometimes trade off poor defending for good attacking but he gives neither. Also not a good person around the training ground or part of the team. Laughed off the report about Prem and CCC clubs and said "none of them have rung me".
Thanks to the organisers, really enjoyed this one. Found several things interesting, not least how Parky's experiences at Hull have influenced his thinking and actions ie the need to have both youth and experience in a team. The Randolph/Ikeme issue had troubled me, but Parky explained that he knew it had been tough on Randolph. His fear had been that if he had played Randolph he would have had to get in a less experienced goal keeper as back up. if Randolph had then be injured, we might have been in trouble. So he got in a more experienced goalie to whom Randolph had to take second place. Parky knew it was very hard on Randolph and had discussed it with him before getting Ikeme. Randolph deserves to be playing regularly and to do that he will need to move on. It illustrates well the tough choices that managers face. What was refreshing was not only the openess with which Parky discussed the problem but also his desire to treat players fairly. Not everyone will agree with his decsions, but it is abundantly clear that a great deal of thought and clinical intelligence underly the choices. Other little things like trying to involve players who had previously isolated themselves from the social side of things had been tackled. Conscious efforts have been made, using the services of the sports psychologist to build and foster team spirit. It looks as though Chris Dickson will return and Parky knows both the problems and the potential, and remains open minded on him. If Dicko could find himself a new agent, we would all benefit! I just instinctively trust and like Parky immensely and very much want him to succeed, for all our sakes.
Parky spoke a lot about bringing in character and I asked him what that meant. He replied that is was players who were role models to the youngsters, good people who wanted to win rather than worry about what car they had, honest guys who will do their job.
PP gave a very long answer re:Dickson. Said his agent had convinced CD that he should be playing for Barcalona. PP said he'd spoken to Lennie who had said "how do you put up with his agent all the time?". Said that he thinks that Chris is basically a good lad and that he has a rare talent to score goals but that he has to add more to his game. With his head turned by his agent he needed to get CD out the building.
PP hopes that CD coming back having had the full 3 months out on loan (there was a recall but PP didn't want to use it as CD and his agent could have used that to say "you stopped me when I was doing well") he will come back with a different attitude. PP says he could be a good impact player coming off the bench for us and could be important. But he added very forcefully "I will not allow anyone to disturb the team spirit and work ethic I've worked so hard to create here" which drew a spontaneous round of applause from the audience.
With a lot of players he talked about working with them on the mental side. Sam he needed to get focused more and believe in himself. Said Lloyd looked for excuses too easily to have a bad game and needed to toughen up more and PP was working on this, encouraging him and pointing out that he's finishing more games as he is showing the right level of commitment. Silly statement of the night came when someone told PP that Sam played too deep. PP disagreed and said that tracking back too much was not Sam's problem and as an attacking force they wanted him up the pitch when possible to which the fan replied "you watch the next game" as if PP never did.

There you go .......... proof that a fan knows more about the game than a Professional with 25 years experience as player, captain and manager.

Which explains why Mooney was signed on loan, when many were puzzled why Parky didn't recall the then regularly scoring Dicko from Brizzle R.
On Ambrose he said it typified the type of players we had last season who didn't feel that had to do too much. He said going to Ipswich and not getting picked up and then leaving us on a free it had "hit home that he was cruising" (insert homophobic joke here). He's suddenly realised he's got to do something and he is.
Like others (lisbie) it was right to time to move on and had been a wake up call.
Took 19 mins before a certain life mentioned the "P" word ; - )
Said that he was asked his opinions by Pardew but that it was always the managers final decision. Clearly didn't want to go too far into this. PP said he told Pardew that we were bringing in too many players who "could be" good players rather than "ready made CCC players" who could have done a job. Said the whole balance of the squad was wrong and the atmosphere hence why he places so much importance on it now and we are seeing the results.
Pardew had his own scouting team who are no longer with the club
Asked why things went wrong and why he couldn't turn it around he said that we need a good result from the good performances against QPR and Soton but it didn't come and so got harder and harder.
Said now if there is a game to watch he or the others are there watching it. On Monday's he, Breaker, Kins, Chapple and Damian Matthew all watch a (presumably) different prem reserve game. Parky was due to go to Stockport on Tuesday and Was at Millwall on Weds.
Said he would like to have a team in a reserve league again. Lack of games has held Holden back PP said. Said he understood the financial reasons.
His philosophy of football is that he likes to give players the "freedom to play" and not be "robotic" but within the tactics picked. Said that you have to play the conditions in reference to Stockport and generally. Said that it's about winning games and he will change line ups, tactics and formations as when it's needed.
Said that when Pardew was sacked Murray asked him to stay. Said Varney and Murray had said that he would be manager when Pardew left for "bigger and better things" and Murray had kept his word.
Interestingly said he was on autopilot in the summer just getting on with the job not really knowing what was going to happening but that "peter varney who was with one of the consortiums said they'd done their homework and wanted him to stay".
Speaks to Murray every week. When signing players speaks to RM and other directors who don't say "no, I don't rate him" but do ask "where does he fit in?, is he fit, etc".
He hasn't spoked to RM re: takeovers for at least 3 weeks. RM always comes down and has a chat after games which he really appreciates.
OK, brain running out now so over to others.
Just a really good night. Great bloke, honest and who seems like he genuinelly wants to talk football with you and answer your questions.

More later.
Did Parky wear his schoolteacher woolly, jacket and tie ......?
;o)
Thats very positive, as for me he looks very suited to the 'Gareth Barry' role.
I wonder if Tony Finnegan is Dickos agent. . .
