  • [cite]Posted By: LargeAddick[/cite]Youga is still a disaster waiting to happen and the weak link in the whole side.

couldn't agree more, if Basey had a touch more pace about him he'd be in there.
  • [quote][cite]Posted By: Addickson's God[/cite]but he still makes too many fundamental errors - on Saturday he was caught wrong footed allowing their winger to get in a cross for what turned out to be a disallowed goal - BFR

For me though game after game he has been one of our better defenders for preventing crosses getting over, McEverley, Butterworth, Crainey and even Murty let over far too many centres for my liking. Richardson, too early to tell.[/quote]

I appreciate he tries and runs hard etc and on Saturday other than this incident he had a solid game, but he is the weakest player in our starting XI this season and by some distance, which is worrying considering that this is League One and not the Championship - and remember we signed him when we were in the Prem. I want to see him improve, but he reminds me a bit of Konchesky in that his play is ok in terms of first touch etc and the work ethic is there but his positioning and awareness/readership of the game really let him down and that sometimes gets him stranded in no man's land as on Saturday.
  • I think many opinions of Kelly were cemented during the disasterous last few months under Pardew. While i completely agree he was a liability during that time i really think he doesn't get much credit for pulling himself together since he won his place back. With our back 4 looking far more solid and good defensive cover from central midfield his willingness to go forward is a positive for the team especially with a fairly slow player playing in front of him. Shame about the hair though.
  • I think Kelly has improved and will continue to improve. This is down to the fact that Parkie and Kinsella and Llera and dailly spend a lot of time talking to him throughout a game. yes he still makes mistakes, but he is not the only one and we are talking about Division 3 players.

Totally agree. People will watch Jonjo make a complete mess of something and give him a little round of applause then rip into Kelly because he lets a full back that Bailey should have been marking, get away from him. I should have asked his ma to post on here... Llera put in a great performance, but got skinned more than once. Nobody goes on about that, because he scored a goal. If he made those mistakes in a game we lost and he didn't score in, he'd be labelled shite, forevermore.

For the hard of thinking amongst you: I'm not advocating getting on our best players' backs more.

It's the same for Lloyd Sam as well. If he puts in a bad cross, he'll get loads of criticism, if Bailey puts in a bad cross no one really says anything. It's unfair but always happens and not just hear.

I saw something about Liverpool fans critisizing one of their midfielders (Lucas I think) if he makes a mistake. But if some of their young English midfielders born in Liverpool play and make a mistake, fans say they're unlucky.
  • [cite]Posted By: Mortimerician[/cite]All credit to post-April Parky. I think when you talk about really top managers you have to look at ones that improve players.

I think this is an excellent point and something Parky deserves a bit of credit for. You'd hope our players would all look better now we're in League 1 but I think you can pick out specific things that have improved in certain players since the start of the year. Sam has become a more direct runner and tends to move the ball on/cross earlier, Bailey is scoring more goals since he moved to the left wing and has cut out a lot of the rash tackles and slack passes, Youga has become less prone to over-elboration on the edge of our box (even if his natural sense of positioning leaves room for improvement), and the whole squad look much fitter and leaner which I'm sure is helping Elliot pull off some of the saves he's made so far and even Basey looked a bit quicker than last season against Hereford.

In all Pardews time with us I never felt he really brought a single player on in their development - most of his signings went backwards or at best stagnated.

Yeah I think I've said that before, I couldn't think of one player Pardew has got the best out of, or a young player he's really helped to develop.

Those players you mention Pardew ruined their confidence, but Parkinson has got that back and actually got even more out of them. Look at Bailey, I don't think he's scored that many league goals in a season since he was playing non-league for Sutton. I think playing on the left has helped him cut out those rash tackles and helped improve his passing. When he was in the middle he'd be trying passes he wasn't always capable of and lost his confidence.

Sam probably has never got as many assists as he did (9 according to the Football League site last season) either. Would love to see him add a few goals to his game, and hopefully in time he'll get a few this season.

Like you say about the squads fitness improving, I never felt Pardew was particularly good at getting/helping the players get any fitter either, there wasn't even and improvement in that area.

Good point Scoham. I've been watching the Addicks for 15 years and i've never seen players tire so visibly in the last 20 minutes as under Pardew.
