He typified everything I hated (and still do) about Premier League footballers.
Why ? Came through the academy at a good club but rather than sit on the bench he chose to come to us to get game time and has gone on to have a good career in the top flight. As above he always seemed ok in interviews.
Not sure what people expect of footballers sometimes.
I'll help you then.
I expect a footballer with an exceptional talent to use it 100% to play the best football he can at the best level he can for as long as he can. I thought JT was an excellent footballer but coasted through his time with us with the odd flash of brilliance (MOTM V Fulham on a Monday night TV game I seem to remember). He, like many others sat in the middle lane of the football motorway cruising along at 72mph. Too often appeared disinterested and showed little or no emotion during or after a match whatever the result. I'm not singling him out, it is endemic in football.
So...he was a winger who was inconsistent - aren't they all ?!?!?
Jerome was a real talent and the issue with talent is that in the main unless you are Ronaldo, Messi or Beckham that talent only comes around and out in your play sporadically thats why they end up at charlton and WBA

Spot on - just think it's harsh to tar him with the "he's all that's wrong with the modern game" brush just because he's an inconsistent winger. I reserve that for idiots who are pictured rolling around on casino floors covered in £50 notes at god knows what time in the morning a couple of days before a game.
he destroyed Curbishleys West Ham and had other great moments in the Prem, but he like most of the rest of the team let himself and the fans down against Wycombe and when we were relegated looked like he felt he was too big to be playing in the Championship. be interesting to see where he ends up.
Rose-tinted glasses there. I loved Robbo to bits, but he was f***ing awful for the first few months after we signed him, and even after he hit his stride he could turn in some pretty poor performances.
Some people are saying Thomas look disinterested and didn't celebrate goals - you have to remember that he learnt his trade at Arsenal, who at that time, very arrogantly (IMHO), chose not to celebrate their goals as a whole team.

Yep, for the first two seasons in fact. IIRC we put him on the transfer list, unsurprisingly no other club wanted him. Someone got injured - he came in played a blinder and somehow we had a new player. For a lot of that time he was played on the wrong wing though - Newts came in to play on the right.
Remember that Spurs game like it was yesterday (which is funny, cos I can't remember yesterday). Oh for the days when we could watch replays from about 6 different angles...............
Would be delighted to see him back if he can play on the right. Him and Harriett would be just as good as Zaha and the other lad at Palace and they have done alright this year.
I'm thinking he might sign for palarse to take Zaha's place. I would rather he didn't sign for us. Irritated me first time around but he had some good moments.

If I recall, Thomas imitated Thierry Henry's goalscoring celebration.

Sadly he didn't imitate his goal scoring feats - sadly he was another player with the talent but not the temperament to produce it often enough and in the relegation season he missed too many matches through ill health and minor injuries for my liking.

Robinson signed in 1992 to replace Robert Lee, he was very poor for the first couple of years and we ended up signing Mark Robson to take his place.
However, in 1995 a certain Lee Bowyer emerged as a class box-to-box midfielder along with Shaun Newton on the right and Curbs gave Robinson a run of games on the left-wing and he was very good there for the next 6/7 seasons until he left.
Robinson was a much better player in the Championship (or whatever it was called) than the Premier League....and Thomas was a much better player in the Premier than the Championship.
Neither Robinson or Thomas really had the pace to beat players on the outside, so were more effective on the left so they could cut in and cross/shoot. Thomas was a much more consistent performer than Rommedahl and did lay on a number of chances for Darren Bent in particular while Robinson was mainly about work-rate and desire. Both were good players for Charlton, especially when the transfer fees are considered....Robinson cost £75k and Thomas £100k. Compare that with the prices/wages paid for Rommedahl and Christensen.
IF Thomas could play effectively on the right, then I would love to see him come back and it shouldn't be forgotten that he may have improved since leaving Charlton. But I wouldn't bring him in to compete with Harriott. Leeds liked him and it wouldn't surprise me if he went there.

i think that a lot of time has passed under the bridge and maybe views are clouded
Mind you he had a decent shot on him http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=UDQpu_YCeZ0&feature=endscreen
Are we talking about the same player?
Another big club reject Jonny Step-over who spent most of the time sulking or trying to do far too much to prove he was in another class.
Or was that another Charlton winger of that era who came and went and few noticed..
If we a want an ineffective winger form the old days let's at least get Rommers back.
