Was that the lot outside the pub, Lord Albert(?) on the way back? Nothing happenening when I went past but plenty mobbing outside on the street so not surprised.
  • Really pleased for our away supporters. Some reward at last for all the hundreds of miles they've travelled in vain since the last away win back in... when? It seems like the last century, but I think it was actually September.

Have a good night out, everyone. You deserve it. Total respect to all 800 of you !!
  • i wasnt actaully at the game ut heard from someone that was. he said he came out of the charlton end and southampton fans we waiting. he said he and 4 mates were spat at, hit and had a programme stand thrown at them. he said police came but didnt seem to do much about it. Totally disgusting in my opinion, wih there were more charlton and maybe we could have teached them a lesson
  • Soton comment:

Charlton, supposedly the worst team in the league, came to SMS and passed well, moved well and showed no signs that they are virtually relegated. Their midfield piddled all over ours.
  • Makes a change, usually we piddle all over ourselves ;-)

    Pretty much spot on.

Well that was a good day out.

Henry Jnr was delighted to see his first ever competitive away win. Shame about not hitting five but you can't have it all.

Travelled down by coach and had Nolly's dad sitting behind me. (that's Kevin Nolan ex-Mercury and now writing for Greenwich Time) sitting behind me. Not only did he admit falling for the Rangers April fools joke but he thinks Parky should be given next year.

Had a wander around the ground looking for protests or Supporters Trust but nothing I could see. Lots of people around due to their crises and the £15/5 tickets but no trouble that I saw pre-game.

Was an exciting game in which we played well and deserved to win. Oggy is spot on when he says we are set up to score from midfield. Slight change from Preston in that Shelvey was playing off the striker not ZZ and it worked.

Kandol on his own up front ran his testicles off. OK, not the fastest or the best touch but he gave them problems all the time he was on. Created the first with a flick on, won and missed the penalty and was involved in the build up for the second. MOTM. Missed him when he went off but having been booked and then spoken to Parky was right to sub him.

Youga and Butterfield both came forward well and and couldn't deal with Bailey/Youga overlapping in the second half.

Most heartening was that having gone in 1-1 and missed a pen you would have expected the home side to put us under pressure early on but it was Charlton who came out fired up, passing the ball and creating the most chances.

Racon's finish was a beauty and Bailey tricked the keeper into going down early and finish with a cheeky flick across the goal.

Credit to Soton, they had their chances but either blasted wide or Rob was there. An anxious 10 mins when they made it 3-2 but some very professional time wasting and stout defending got us through.

As for Saints. Bizarre announcement from Crouch (a director?) rallying the fans and asking them to send cheques to save the club. Lawrie McMenamy also come out. No protests and very supportive at the start but very quiet when losing. And if you thought the Valley crowd leaves quickly when behind you should have seen the Saints fans streaming out as soon as it went 3-1.

Not sure what happened with Parky's sending off. Think the Soton coach punched one of our staff over us playing on when they had an injured player and Parky went over to "remonstrate".

No idea why Parky was in a suit but given how superstitious footballers are expect to see it again next week.

Chris Perry came over and clapped our fans.

Got a bit nasty outside. Our high risk fans were looking for it all game and were waving £20 notes at the Saints fans outside. No segregation and the Police decided to keep the Charlton fans locked inside but only after already letting all the high risk and 70/80% of our fans out.

Punches were thrown and the lock in left the coaches sitting at the road side where the usual idiots may impolite suggestions that we step off the coach and engage in a discussion of the relative merits of our teams. Offer declined.

And well done to the Soton knobhead who was so hard as to bang on the coach window and scream at a 10 year old boy while with 15 of his mates. You most be so proud of yourself. Henry Jnr was a bit shaken up but he'll be back.

Otherwise a good day out and worth to see Shelvey's first league goal and Racon's finish alone.

    Bring on Derby
  • Im off to but a sunday paper AND im gunna read the football sections!!
  • Cheers for the reports, i like reading the reports from our fans that were there.
  • Great result......

Not what I was charged on the day, in was £20/£10. I don't begrudge them the money but how to they get away with charging double, on the day to away supporters?

League allow 4 games per season as "special promotions".

Bad rule but there you go.

Bingaddick Jnr and I were seated near one of the exits. We came down by train from my sisters in Woking so at the final whistle and after clapping the players off, we slipped out fairly sharpish. Frankly I thought there would be a lock in and was surprised when we were allowed to leave. I am not easily intimidated but I felt it was about to kick off as we walked through the car park so I told my lad to do his jacket up.

I was surprised at the poor segregation in the ground itself and what spoiled slightly an otherwise great occassion were the stewards and police who continuously blocked my view of the goal down our end and the general toing and froing of them which made in a bit uneasy. I'd also like to know why some people are compelled to stand with nobody around them? I just don't get it. Fine if you were at the back and because there were plenty of spare seats, it was easy to move, so why stay standing in front of people who want to sit.

I am sorry that Henry J, had that kind of nasty ending to an otherwise brilliant day. Glad he's OK.

As for your analysis of the game, it is pretty much spot on. There are always ironies in football as in life but yesterday pointed up one for me. with our midfield four/five of ZZ, Racon, Bailey, Shelvey and Sam, we have as skillful and as potent a group as probably any team in this Division. Were these players all to have been available to the managers this season, the irony is, we would now be looking up not down in my opinion. Parky has taken a while to sort out the best combination and today I think he got it right. What is even more pleasing is the quality of the finishes which came from players who were playing with the right edge and not mired in fear.
  • Best performance from us since the Reading (home game) early on in the season. Our Midfield 5 over ran them for most of the game and it was good to see us score during periods when we were on top. Nervous last 6 mins but we stayed strong and took a well deserved 3 points. Relegation looks certain but it's vital we finish the season with a decent run.

Like bing was out of the ground pretty sharpish after the game and did not see any of the bother outside with there knobheads.

Surely thats the same as asking why do you choose to sit behind people who are standing?

  • We`re going down but at long last perhaps we are showing some pride. I just pray that losing the out of contract players plus perhaps Gray and Hudson means we can keep this midfield together.
  • I know it's a very big if but..............If only we'd held on at home to Derby and scored early against Southampton when we dominated and then nicked a point or 2 from the games we led at Bristol and Burnley then we could've actually made a fight of this. Just leaves me wondering how we'd have fared with ZZ and Racon fit all season.

    No.

Firstly (and this has been done to death on here), they are seated tickets. The rules require people to sit (other than ocassionally to get in or out our stand and cheer then sit down again).
It is totally perverse to argue that those who sit behing those who break the rules and stand must move. The opposite is the case. Those who chose to stand must do so with regard to those who wish to sit and move elsewhere where they are not a nuisance.

Anyway I wasn't talking about me. There was no one standing in front of me other than the bloody stewards!
  • Cheers Bing, Henry jnr is fine now.

Agree the police and Stewards got it wrong with the segregation.

they knew who the hight risk were, our Police were there as well but they were allowed to go out first and take up a position to taunt the Soton fans who have developed a nasty reputation and who must take the biggest slice of the blame IMHO.

There seemed to be a high level of stewarding (very polite and friendly BTW) and policing. I wonder next season in league 1 what the levels of policing will be and how many more opportunities for trouble there will be?

On the funny side as the coaches were being escorted away Deon Burton was trying to walk over to his car (I presume he lives or was staying in Pompey). He was in his CA training kit so a policewoman stopped him thinking he was a fan. At least he gave a wave and an slightly shy smile to the coaches.

Racon, ZZ and a whole other host of injuries (Fortune, Hudson, Gray, Murty, Weaver et al) have all come at bad times and upset the team but all teams have injuries and we had a big squad to cope with it. We didn't.

Then again if we win at Coventry and then Birmingham are looking beatable then..... : -)

Yeah, I know the rules, but surely if someone is standing infront of you, it's far simpler to just move, rather than sit there and moan you can't see (I've seen people do this, with 100's of empty seats)

I see you point Stu but Bing is right on this one.

for the record the "high risk" fans arrived just before KO and stood three rows in front of us. I moved more to get away from them and their antics. There were plenty of empty seats and we found better seats just behind Golfie but he was ignoring me ; - )
  • Pretty much agree with everything Henry says about the game except Kandol's contribution. Thought he tired quite early (not surprising I suppose, jeez was it hot...) and should have come off earlier but not his fault maybe. Sorry to hear HI Jr had a nasty experience with them too but hopefully won't put him off away days in future.

Cheers Les, Had a chat with Henry Jnr today and he's still up for more away games. Brought it home to me how inured you become to seeing all the nonsense that goes on until you see it thru the eyes of a child. Still the pie liberated from the Saints press room by the Nolans cheered him up.

Think you are being harsh on Kandol. If he was tired it was due to him working so hard up top on his own. If anything it was Shelvey tiring playing behind him (understandably) that isolated him so much later on.

As I said Kandol flicked on the ball for the first, did the same again a few times, got on the end of a good Sam cross, won the pen, was involved in the build up for Racon's goal and generally made himself a pain in their collective backside.
  • Hey, Henry, being harsh is what I do don't you know ;-)

Jonjo was struggling to get up to support him in the second half as you say so might have been a factor.

Some people would rather moan about something than solve the problem by moving. How hard was it to get up and move to another seat, quite simple I'd imagine and that way everyone is happy.
