Season ticket prices slashed by £50 - Newsflash from the Club

edited April 2009 in General Charlton
Season-ticket prices slashed by £50

Most adult and all U18 season-ticket prices at The Valley are to be reduced by £50.

The Charlton board today revealed a pricing package aimed at encouraging season-ticket holders to stick with the club despite the bitter disappointment of the 2008/09 campaign.

Adults in the upper north stand and NW quadrant will find the cost of their seat slashed by nearly 15 per cent, from £340 to just £290, with £50 reductions also on offer in the east and west stands.

There are cuts of up to £30 for most seniors, while junior tickets come down throughout the stadium. The cost of bringing a child under the age of 11 to every game will now be only £49, or just £2.13 a time.

Football chairman Richard Murray said: “These prices reflect the importance that the board places on keeping the Charlton family intact during what we acknowledge are dark times, both in terms of the team’s results and the wider economy.

“We need to retain as many season-ticket holders as possible to enable the club to regroup and rebuild, and we are doing our bit to make renewing more affordable.”

  • No change to the lower North though, arse!
  • Not bad - I suspect that are hoping that the £49 under 11's will be snapped up along with an adult ticket.
  • Seems very reasonable to me - they are doing their best to make it as affordable as possible, depsite needing every penny.
  • Has got me thinking about it, £290 is value.

I spotted that as that's where my ticket is. Then only place in the whole stadium that's not been reduced, I'd like to hear how the club justifies that one when I email them about it. Fecking liberty.

(BTW i wouldn't have minded if the club had kept prices as is but it's not the point)
  • It will to be with charging away fans I reckon

Because it will be wrapped up in the 'we have to charge away fans what we charge in the lower north' argument
  • Do you know that for a fact Dan?

Was the lower north not discounted last year? I seem to remember it was but i could be wrong.
  • £49 for kids. Result.

£50 off my ticket as well so saved £99 personally.

I was going to renew any way but I hope this encourages a few more who were, understandably waivering to renew as well.

    Well done the Club.

  • as suggested

all they need to do now is take note of point 2.
  • no, but that was the argument last year. They have to ensure that a ST is at discount to matchday pricing over the whole season of that particular seat.

    It was.

Very cheap ST price but high matchday price to allow us to fleece maximise the income from the Jimmy Seed Stand.

Think I'll give the move to the East stand a miss!

  • Think that Charlton have got this just about spot on. Well done I say.
  • Yep.
    £290 for me.
    Now, wheres that penny jar.....................

Because it will be wrapped up in the 'we have to charge away fans what we charge in the lower north' argument

what is this argument? do they have to charge the same for legal reasons or is it their choice?

It's pretty annoying for those of us who sit in the lower north. It's not great PR either, because rather than looking at the prices and thinking i'm paying the joint least in the stadium (family stand excluded) i'm just thinking i'm in the only area without a discount. Moving stands is difficult for me for various reasons.

    Yep, can't moan really !
  • So on that basis - match tickets in the Lower N will be £25 minimum and those in the Upper N will be £17 minimum.
  • I was seriously considering not renewing, and was going to buy on a game by game basis. But I will now renew..........

I am saving £25. After watching the tripe served up this season that is terrible price imo. Basically a price of an away game.

    NOT IMPRESSED.

Those would be my points. Won't stop me renewing but isn't good PR, and a lack of viable explanation in the press release don't help either.
  • Well Charlton have done their bit once again. Hopefully everyone that can possibly renew will now do so.
  • BBClaus,

The club have to charge the away fans the same as home fans for the "equivalent view" by league rules.

So last season it was decided to charge a much lower ST price for the lower north (the equivalent view to the Jimmy South Stand).

The lower north was £50 cheaper than the Upper North last season.

I can see you point about not getting a discount this season but you could look at it as you got the discount last season.

In addition it would cost £575to buy 23 match tickets for the Lower North so a saving over the season of £285.

That's the biggest saving anywhere in the ground (barring disabled supporters).
  • so to sit in my seat on a match by match basis would be £25. Quite steep for League 1 in my opinion. The season ticket saving on this of £150 is well worth it, basically 6 free games.
  • Just phoned the commercial centre and they don't know the answer, why on the prices for the West and East does it only mention certain blocks - I have just enquired whether there is a particular seat available in the West Lower, Block A and there seems to be space in other blocks, so why aren't they mentioned.

    Answers on a postcard.......

Maybe to try to get more people to move upstairs for atmosphere? Besides it's mostly nice and dry up there. ;)

Maybe those points should've been put into the press release...and stop doing the club's job for them :-)
  • The season-ticket price in the lower north has nothing to do with the matchday price. We tried to create a price incentive there last year by making it relatively cheap, but there wasn't much evidence that people moved in off the back of it. In fact, one of the big trends last summer was migration to dearer seats that became available as some of the PL season-ticket holders disappeared.

The club would have liked to have had a lower price for everyone this time, but it was felt that at £12.60 a game the lower north was already good value and we needed to target further savings at U18s and families in particular.

One thing I have learned over the years is that there is no right answer to setting the prices and you're never completely sure if you got it right, even after the event. However, along with others I only advise, so the credit (or the blame) belongs to the directors!

I'm still on the Target 40,000 committee, along with Gary Davenport from the Fans' Forum, so do one ; - )

Fair point about the press release but I would guess that as an initial release they wanted to get over the headline message ie £50 off as it that which will be picked up by the local and national press.

Plus the home/away fan charging is slightly controversial (ask AFKA) so maybe they didn't want to go there.
