  • is there such a phrase as doing a Burton? there should be.. let's play strikers who can score, then we might actually score
  • well dicko can''t do any more that what he's done surely.

acted like a proper pro not come out and moaned and now got a goal.

Maybe Parky will give him a run now.
  • Not a chance.

16,000 fans are wrong - Pardew and Parkinson are right.

    What a load of BOLLOX
  • Dicko to Southend on Monday. Who wants money on it?
  • Pardkinson - just f*cking start him. Expect abuse from NU block H if you don't!!
Burton and Gray are utter rubbish.
  • A player that can poach a goal will be invaluable next season in division one where we can expect defenders to make gaffs (including ours). Both Dickson and McLeod have proved they can do it at that level. We must hang on to them. Toddy and Gray will be long gone come the seasons start. If we allow Dicko and McLeod to leave we will only have to get in dross from Nowhere utd ANYWAY.
  • He's scored as many goals as Burton and he's NEVER started a league game.

This is seriously beginning to f*ck me off now - are we all mad or is the manager a genius?

Answers on a postcard please .....
  • No one thinks he's the best striker in the world WSS, but i would bet money he's the best stiker at the club. In fact looking at their stats, I'd say he's the ONLY striker at the club. I wouldn't pay good money to watch any of our other forwards, their records are abysmal. Now lets see him play at the same time as Jonjo.
  • He'll get 15 minutes max on tuesday.
  • [cite]Posted By: stoneroses19[/cite]He'll get 15 minutes max on tuesday.

if that's true and we lose then parky will surely get even more stick. I really think it could get nasty on tuesday if we lose, with the fans turning on players and manager like i've not seen before at CAFC.

OF course this is meaningless speculation as we won't lose. :-P

  • If he doesnt start,, then surely we sing for him from the first whistle, and give PArky hell if he doesnt come on.
  • If he doesn't start against Palace, he surely never will. Parky must have a massive problem with Dicko if he's prepared to jeopardise the team's chances of winning matches over it.
  • Look I can quite understand why neither manager fancied him, if we had a plethora of razor sharp strikers playing out of their skins. I can also understand maybe why Pards didn't play him this season, given he was set on playing Varney. . However we have failed to hit the net this season and we have nobody up front that is feared by the opposition (except maybe Bouazza occasionally). We get rid of Varney (who at least has a track record of scoring goals for other clubs) and replace him with Burton who is just not a prolific striker. So come on Parky, why not try Chris. Actually I'd like to have seen him an McLeod played up front together, now that pace would have put the fear of god into some of the ageing defenders there are in this division.

    ............

We may never see that this season with Izale on loan until May. A good striking partnership is usually made of strikers who bring contrasting qualities to the partnership, and it's about personalities as much as anything.
  • Below is an updated version of comments I made on another thread last week. The sentiment remains the same and the evidence even more compelling.

This is a breakdown of Dickson’s appearances in the first team this season:

Yeovil – came on after 67 minutes (score 0-1) during which time we drew 0-0
Watford – came on after 72 minutes (score 0-1) during which time we drew 0-0
Preston – came on after 78 minutes (score 1-2) during which time we drew 0-0
Wolves – came on after 79 minutes (score 1-1) during which time we lost 2-0
Bristol City – came on after 57 minutes (score 0-2) during which time we drew 0-0
Ipswich - came on after 78 minutes during (score 0-1) which time we won 1-0
Barnsley - came on after 73 minutes (score 0-3) during which time we won 1-0
Plymouth - came on after 74 minutes (score 0-1) during which time we won 2-1
Blackpool – came on after 80 minutes (score 0-2) during which time we drew 0-0
Norwich – came on after 80 minutes (score 1-1) during which time we drew 0-0
Sheffield Wednesday - came on after 68 minutes (score 0-3) during which time we drew 1-1
Sheffield United - came on after 58 minutes (score 0-1) during which time we drew 1-1

    So, in summary:

Results before Dickson came on – Won 0 Drew 2 Lost 10 For 3 Against 19 (858 minutes)
Results after Dickson came on – Won 3 Drew 8 Lost 1 For 6 Against 5 (232 minutes)

So, Dickson has been on the pitch for just 25% of the time that he has been picked. However, as a team we have not only scored twice as many goals when he's been on the pitch than when he hasn't but we've also let in 14 less. And if this was a League we'd have accumulated 14 points as against 2 and only lost the one game.

We have the worst away record of any team in the League. We have scored just 10 in 14 away games. Why? We’ve stuck with 4-5-1 all season and the only League game where it’s worked (in terms of a result) is Doncaster (though we did have Varney as well as Gray in the team). Even then, by all accounts, we were outclassed and if it wasn’t for their lack of finishing we would have lost there as well.

We’ve even played 4-5-1 at home and it hasn’t worked by virtue of the fact that we have given the initiative to the opposition. We have, effectively, invited them to attack us and all that happens is we end up giving away free kicks and corners from which we are most vulnerable. Moreover, we have no lead to cling onto and end up chasing the game. By the time we make the change to 4-4-2 the damage is all but done.

The solution has to be to revert to 4-4-2 and try and shoot out way out of trouble. Yes we might well get thumped in a few games by doing it but we might also get a few results from which some confidence might be gained and this will also have the effect of galvanising the fans.

As it is our death is a long lingering one.

He's actually scored twice as many as Burton for us, 2 goals and only in sub appearances. Burton has scored once, and that was a penalty.

I'd say the other strikers are better all round footballers. He's the only natural goalscorer, and that's what we need right now. The rest of the team will have to clear up from his mistakes.

Some might argue Todorov, but nowadays he's much more the creative player than goalscorer, he's lost the pace he had and lacks the fitness.

Can't fault this to be fair. I have to say that unfortunately with the amount of games left I'd be very surprised if we can avoid relegation. With that in mind we have to keep hold of players like Dicko as the likes of Gray and Toddy will not want to play league 1. Just my thoughts.

Well at long last he started a game. Don't know how he played overall but Parky seems to be warming to him:

"He's adding things to his game, he's competing well in the air, his hold up play is getting better and he created our goal with a great piece of skill.”

Well it didn't take him long to work out that Dicko is our lucky talisman. These two games to add to his record:

Palace - came on after 75 minutes (score 1-0) during which time we drew 0-0
Burnley - not on pitch for last 20 minutes (score 0-2)but played for 70 minutes during which time we won 1-0

    Results with Dickson not on pitch – Won 1 Drew 2 Lost 11 For 4 Against 21 (953 minutes) 5 points GD - 17
    Results with Dickson on pitch – Won 4 Drew 9 Lost 1 For 7 Against 5 (307 minutes) 21 points GD + 2

For "Competing in the air, his hold up play is getting better" perhaps we should have been reading "we've finally come to the terms with the fact that we do actually have a goalscorer at the club who is capable of doing something different. And like the fans we wished we'd given him a chance earlier instead of keeping a rather misguided faith with our striking failures".

    And agreed again.

I know spin has become a dirty word on here. But Parky's suggestion that he's now picking Dicko because he's suddenly become a better player who has miraculously started ''adding things to his game'' suggests he could teach Mandelson a thing or two about the spinning art.

I'm reminded of something George Fenner, head coach at Lords, said about having the youthful Dennis Compton on his books in the 1930s. ''I wouldn't say I coached him'', George observed. ''But I didn't mess him up.''

In other words, Dicko, forget all the b****x they're telling you about how your link-up play has to improve and you need to learn to hold the ball up more. Do what you know you do best. Get in behind defences, be as selfish as you like and shoot on sight. We haven't had a striker like that in ages. And when they tell you that you can't do that, just point out to them where all this selfless link-up play and admirable holding the ball up by our other so-called strikers has got us.

  • As soon as Dickson was pulled from the game, I shut off the commentary and prepared for an afternoon at the Newseum with the family. Charlton squad offers almost no threat without Dicko on the pitch. Subbing out Dicko means that the single most dangerous aspect of Charlton's squad for counters was no longer on the field and that Burnley could attack all out without any great concern that they'd be punished for it.
  • Burton offered nothing second half yet as soon as Kandol got warmed up and ready to come on you just knew Dicko would be the one to make way

That is exactly why I cannot wait for Parkinson to go and darken someone elses door... he is completely out of his depth, fluked getting the job due to financial reasons not footballing, and is the equivalent of a stoped clock telling the right time twice a day....

certainly not the type of charlton character I am familiar with...but then again my history only goes back to 1986...
  • Asfar as I remember it was his good work that got the ball in the box and helped set up the goal . Looked a bit livley second half but the ref was a bit picky and didn't seem to like anything physical.

He was not fantastic by any stretch of the imagination and still looks very raw at times but he was defo our most creative thing up front and offering way more than Burton
  • championship appearances for charlton strikers and goal record this season
    Dickson
    6 starts (10 as a sub ) 0 goals

    Burton
    7 starts (6 as a sub) 1 goal

    Gray
    21 starts (6 as a sub) 7 goals

    Kandol
    3 starts (1 as a sub) 0 goals

    Mcleod
    2 starts 0 goals

    Todorov
    2 starts (10 as a sub) 0 goals

    Varney

    Waghorn

    PATHETIC
  • So those stats show that Burton IS better than Dickson...

I thought Burton showed more when he came on than Dickson did the whole match. The ball stuck to him, he passed a simple ball out wide or back into the midfield and went a made a run.

[cite]Posted By: WSS[/cite]So those stats show that Burton IS better than Dickson...

If you count a Penalty as "better" then yes. Dickson has scored in open play for us which Burton hasn't. And whilst I've not ever suggested that he IS good enough I have said he deserved a chance which he's now getting.

The likes of Owen and Defoe (at their level) don't look or perform anywhere near as good on their own up front as they do alongside a target man. It's too easy for two CBs to mark them out of the game and knock them off the ball and playing with their back to goal is not their strength.

Dicko may well not be good enough for the Championship but then we didn't waste big money on him (unlike £2.5m for Varney) and he has demonstrated that, with the right service and system, he will score in League 1. Which is where I believe we will be next season.
  • Its a shame that his brilliant touches/beating players were about 50 yds from goal and not where they needed to be like in front of it.

He is still learning the game and has something about him but he wouldnt have got a look in if one of the strikers we had paid serious money for had delivered. This striker problem is far from resolved.
  • The fact that Dicko did little the last few matches has got more to do with him being isolated in a 4-5-1 than any lack of effort on his part. These are MUST WIN GAMES FFS!!! I cannot accept that Toddy (or McLeod or even Burton) is not an alternative option to playing one up front, we needed to take games by the scruff of the neck, not line up defensively and hope the breaks come our way. It's far too late for that.
