dont think so 1st game with my grandad was a nipper it was southampton 6-2 anyone remember the year it was around the time they won the fa cup. 76 or 77 .
Started in 75 and found it really good fun, expectations low, crowds pretty low but as ever good mates, some really run down grounds, but best of all some true characters in the side. how many of this lot will be remembered in 30yrs?

You might have seen the one season 80/81 when we came straight back up under Mike Bailey.

Yes, about 8k of us squeezed onto a terrace as everyone wanted to get in the central section.[/quote]One of my fondest memories as a kid, me and the old man going up the A12 in his Ford Cortina, passing the hundreds of Lewis Coaches, Kenny Eviritt on the then Capital Radio, taking our seats in the main stand, and amazed at the amount of Charlton there, who were singing to the Ipswich fans the number at the time "Shaddap your face" by Joe Dolce
I was only 3 in 1981 so no. Last season in the third tier was indeed 1980/81. My Dad first took me to Manchester City at home in October 1983. First game I really remember was Tottenham away in April 1987.
My grandad first started taking me the year we were relegated to div.3, so its been a glorious 28-29 year round trip for me ;-)
This club has been one of the only constant things in my life, family come and go, friends come and go, jobs come and go but charlton has always been there for me and i suppose i for them.
[cite]Posted By: adamtheaddick[/cite]sadly not, not born 1980.
Never mind, you can stop being sad next season, then, Adam ;-)
[cite]Posted By: WhenIwasLittleBoy[/cite]Paul Walsh started his career for Charlton in the third division, as well as Paul Elliott,
If my memory is correct, Paul Walsh made his debut the season we got relegated - 79/80. Came on as a sub v Shrewsbury at end of Sept, which was the first game we won that season. Just before his 17th birthday. Knew then he'd be good - a bit like Jonjo now, only Walsh looked 16, not 36 like Jonjo does!
As we weren't there long it is easy to nostalgiacly remember the good times - plenty of goals scored for instance - but the ground was very, very empty much of the time and in a much harsher financial climate it is not something I would choose to repeat.
As a related aside: being the smooth talking romantic that I am I treated Mrs Glover to a few 3rd division matches during the 80/81 season which must have made an impression as during the 86 World Cup when Bearsley played she amazed us by asking if it was the same Peter Bearsley who had played for Carlisle as she had seen him play against Charlton.
I am a yes on this one, saw my first game at home to Wolves in the 67/68 season and have been hooked ever since, some of the previous posts have mede me very happy and brought back fond memories:
Beating PNE at home to get promoted after going 0-1 down Flanagan, Hales, Walsh, Elliot etc Ipswich Away in the cup Etc, Etc.

We were Div 2 at that time. I think the game was a league cup match. may have been 1976/77.
Anyway I was there.
And I've seen us play Div 3 football. Real football not plastic prem.
I never have. Bottom of Division one and procrastinating about Colchester wanting the Kinsella fee paid in a one-er was as low as I've seen. Actually, I believe that Gillingham saved us, because we were in all sorts of bother that season. When Gills met the asking price we panicked and did the same. Kins came in and we shot back into the mid-table. The next year we were up into the prem for the first time. I remember a brilliant V0TV article about how we needed Kins in (following a very succesful trail).
In our current plight and given that he wanders around in shorts on matchdays, I wonder if Kins has one more saviour routine in him.
yep but as a slightly synical 10 year old thought we'd never go up .... who were we promoted with in 1981 , i'm guessing rotherham , barnsley and chesterfield were up the top with us no idea who went up with us
I must've done, because my parents have a junior membership card for me dated 1980 at home somewhere. Don't remember a flipping thing about it though, as I was only 7 or 8 at the time.
Yep. To those that think that relegation is the end, I can remember crying like a baby last time we went down to Div 3. I thought that we'd never play in the dizzy heights of Div 2 again. But look at some of the fantastic things that have happened since then. It's all water under the bridge.
Lesson: Relegation isn't a permanent state of affairs it's just one event in a long succession of good and bad times. If we do go down, we'll come up again (sometime).
