Oh yes indeed. And I remember watching with a kind of acceptance that it was where we really belonged. We don't feel like that yet (even if we sometimes play like it), so things aren't totally hopeless...
Remember the 72-75 seasons well - scored loads of goals (Horsfield, Hales, Flanagan) but had no decent central midfield or centre backs (until Richie Bowman and Peter Hunt broke through to the team)
Was wondering whether the current side is really the worst I've seen - especially when remembering dross like Vincent O'Kane and Eamon Dunphy in those Div3 days.
Think its a toss up between this years team and the 79/80 team which won just 6 games all season and none away from home - even the 71/72 relegation team managed to win 12 games.
Yes, it's where we were when I started, so I've seen two promotions from div 3 to div 2 - the PNE match mentioned above and in 80/81. Agree with Addickted - that was a cracking season. One of the few times in my Charlton supporting history when you went to matches confident that we would win - even away from home. 17 games unbeaten wasn't it? (Opposite of this season!) Then we lost away at bottom of the league Oxford, on Boxing Day, i think...
oh yes, started 1972. As mentioned that victory over Preston to gain promotion sticks in the memory. Only behind the Wembley game and Back to The Valley game as the best ever. It was a Friday night, the atmosphere was brilliant as were the team. Those were the dayz, and they are coming back !!
Yes, I have very fond of memories when we beat Preston NE to get promotion to the second div. That's when I got the Charlton bug!!!
Loved the old Valley, a proper football ground.
Ironically my first 3 games of live footy was at Highbury, my cousin was/is a Gooner and took me, it pished him off when I told him Charlton was more exciting!!!
Some great games in Div 3 - 3-1 win v PNE to get seal promotion on the last game of the season n 75 was a classic almost up there with the play-off final - 0-1 down after 10 minutes - Bob Curtis our best ever penalty taker chooses inexplicably to place it rather than smash it and it gets saved. Bobby Goldthorpe of all people gets the equalizer then Killer smashes in 2 long range rockets cue pitch invasion and happy days are here again.
Also remember a 6-1 thrashing of Notts Co when a young 'Flash' Flanagan got scored 4 goals cutting in from the wing. There were also plenty of dire fixtures in front of crowds usually below 5,000. The evening games were best as you couldn't see the gaps on the E.Terrace!

But there were a lot of bad times as well, so I definitely don't want to go back to div 3 again ... although we might actually hear less booing then!
That was the old Div 2 but you would've seen them in the 3rd in the 80/81 season
Yes from me
Eleven away wins and some pretty good turnouts up and down the country.
Some nasty incidents as well at places like Blackpool and Huddersfield.

I have only known it as Division 2 or League One, which sounds better
