[cite]Posted By: upminsteraddick[/cite]..how Ironic as he seems to drop every ball that comes near him!..
My first question is to ask where the irony is.
I don't advocate dropping Weaver but only because, as others have said, we haven't got anyone better (?).
Aside from that I don't think he's a particularly good keeper and like VFR don't see why people sing his name so much. It's worth adding that he's experienced and doesn't need his name sung as much as someone like Varney or Sam who are younger and would benefit from the boost of confidence it would bring.
I've always felt that Charlton fans over-estimate our keepers. We've had some good keepers recently like Carson and Kiely, but they were good not outstanding as everyone seemed to think. I would often watch a Premiership match and see the other teams' keepers make saves just as good as our own which would pretty-much go unnoticed by our fans. The simple fact is that our fans love good defenders and goalkeepers. You'd have to be an absolutely unbelievable striker to win Player of The Year at Charlton. The fact that Mendonca never won it just goes to show.
Back to the point: Weaver shouldn't get over-criticised for one bad day (as should no-one) but he isn't that good either. Consider this: if Hudson and Primus are such good defenders, just who is to blame?
Some recent howlers are hard to overlook, we have seen to often recently him just palm the ball away when he should have been able to hold it. however unless funds are made available for one we don't have a goalkeeper any better than Weaver, so yes he makes mistakes, but he is not the only player in our current side to do that, nor is he the only goalkeeper to make them.
[cite]Posted By: upminsteraddick[/cite]..how Ironic as he seems to drop every ball that comes near him!..just go back and I have never been so gutted for the team to have that joke in goal ruin all their and our efforts!
[cite]Posted By: jimmymelrose[/cite] Consider this: if Hudson and Primus are such good defenders, just who is to blame?
Was going to make this point yesterday.Hudson,as stated by many has been a rock, and i go along with this.Another regular theme on here is that Holland works his socks off and can be charged with no blame at all.So if we cannot lie the problems at the spine of the teams door ,then surely some responsibility for the goals we concede has to be taken by Weaver.
Now i'm not saying Weaver is a bad keeper, but why for two seasons now has he had no serious competition for his jersey? The answer to that can only be given by the current management team.
One thing Curbs always ensured over the years was that there always was a decent bit of competition to be the No 1 between the sticks.
I also agree that Mr Weaver is very average. Does not command his penalty area as well as he could. Could this be due to excess baggage he is carring around his waist? Don't get me wrong, he's a good shot stopper but that's about it.
This leads me on to our ex keeper, Carson. He had pretty much the same qualities, good shot stopper, but crap at commanding/stamping his presence within the penalty area.
So that leaves us with Elliott. My memory seems to partially remember that he had a blinder when intorduced at Plymouth last season, dropped the forthcoming week, randolph has a nightmare, then what happened? Did he ever get another opportunity?
Confidence flows from a solid defence, a solid defence is usually founded by a goalkeeper who commands authority within his penalty area. Neither Weaver nor carson command such authority.
Pardews pissed about with the side so much already, why not the keeper?
upminsters comments seem fair to me,I too feel that a lot of people on here apear blindfolded when it comes to Weaver, he is the worst keeper we have had for many MANY years. its not solely his fault that we are where we are at the moment but can any one honestly say they are confidant with him in goal? don't get me wrong on his day he can perform some great stops but he cannot hold onto the ball to save his life and is the most un-commanding keeper i have ever seen.

I don't think he's the best around, just the best one we've got and without a sackful of cash we need him to be playing confidently. Calling for his head, whilst superficially appealing, is just a case of cutting of your nose to spite your face.
So do we agree then that despite not being a very good keeper, he's better than Elliot, and so he should stay in the team.
Can I also then re-iterate my request to sing other players names - oh, and by the way, can we stop that 'Fish' rubbish? - he doesn't actually play for us anymore.
i don't believe dropping weaver is the answer as I do think he's saved us more times than not.
BUT granted he slipped for the 2nd goal but he could still have caught it. TNot at fault for the 3rd goal ball came through players legs and his initial save was good.
Keepers make mistakes now and again, but overall he has been good for us (wasn't he the players player of the season last year). Perhaps a pity the mistake came when we looked like getting something from the game for a change, but when your luck is down, it's down.
Ive never particularly rated Weaver to be honest....he is just an average keeper as far as Im concerned. He has made quite a few blunders lately, so why should he be overlooked in our seemingly never ending search for our best 11 ;-)

Or our seemingly never ending search for a scapegoat ;o)
i don't mind weaver , we're not gonna get a better keeper than him for a long time... someone teach him the art of pushing the ball away and behind the goal rather than forwards when parrying a shot and he'll be a lot better for it ...
even when he slipped if he pushes the ball behind the goal rather than forwards and upwards philips doesn't score
I don't think he is outstanding but he is a decent keeper.
Not sure about this catching or pushing a ball around the post. If a striker is hitting a low shot from 12 yards (as v Barnsley) I think any keeper is doing well to get to it let along direct it.
I think the number of times that Weaver is left exposed to such shots in the real issue. And why are the oppo strikers reacting faster than our defenders?
I also think that Robbie Elliot is a great lad, a fan, Bromley Addicks sponsor his shirt so I'm hoping he gets to play for the team soon. Not saying this week or even season but he is the future.
Maybe next year when Weaver's wages will be unaffordable unless we go up.
I think Weaver is a decent keeper and think it would be stupid to drop him. This season he has actually kept us in games, double point blank saves away at Watford springs to mind. Countless times at home he has played well and made some great saves. Every player has his bad days.
Why not drop Sam for his miss, Varney for all of his 50 misses this season?
This week we should get two new faces in I just hope they can change the team for better.
Clearly Rob deserves a chance though! Charlton fan who will do his all for the club not just pick up his wages week in week out. Fair play Weaver has made a few decent saves this season but I really dont see why he is picked every week when he makes mistakes like this! He is forever flaaping at the ball and doesn't command his area or give any confidence to the back four! I don't know why everyone seems to adore him!

having watched the goals on charltontv, I think Weaver could of done better. So some blame is at his door, but if we had gone 3-1 up like we should of then I think the blues heads would of dropped and we would of won.
This is the kind of thread that really f me off, one of our best and most consistent players and he has 1 howlerof a game and people want him dropped, get a grip, bandwagon supporters , we're doing poor and our bad form isn't gonna help him and really has been our only stand out player this season, maybe with hudson, if anyone should be being looked at it is Pards!!!
Suggesting the keeper is soley responsible for the goals against column is as accurate a demonstration of a total lack of understanding of the game as you'll ever see. Take two minutes and look at the work good players do off the ball and tracking back. The Cronaldo, Rooney, Lampard, Torres, Senna, Messi, Rauls of this world rarely give the ball away in dumb places or lose their markers so their keepers have less to deal with than ours. Obviously Weaver is no Buffon, but common sense dictates that more chances have a higher probability of equalling more goals. You can point to Weaver's goals against and say that makes him shit, but what our statiticians would tell you is that he's been at fault for a smaller proprtion of them than most other keepers in the league. Thinking before posting. It's a good policy and makes you look less of a knee jerk, know-nothing. i know this to my cost.

I knew someone was missing, but couldn't think who it was ;-)

Hopefully in the not too distant future Rob Elliott, as a Charlton fan himself, will be ready but for the moment Nicky is the man.
Where he ranks compared to other keepers is a subject for another thread.

The 2nd goal I am baffled as to why he pushed it up he could have just caught it - but he's not a bad keeper.

KEEP WEAVER IN! very good IMO
Hold on.Varney and Sam HAVE both been dropped this season, havn't they?
(Cue ' was Weaver holding them ' jokes)
You sure your not Elliott? :-)
