  • [cite]Posted By: miserableold-ish git[/cite]Sorry Carl, but can't agree with you about Lloyd Sam, I thought bloody Thomas was back the way he played.
As for Luke , I don't think is confidence is there at the moment, but I would always pick him (and Bailey) as at least they TRY for the 90 minutes.

So Holland and should also be played then :oP
  • I think that Holland should be dropped in favor of JonJo, give it a try with Holland on the bench to replace either Bailey or Jonjo if they are having a poor game.

Bailey last night should have switched out at half time by the sound of it!

A couple of seasons ago we wanted a team full of triers even if the results didn't go our way. That is what we have with Varney and Holland (and sometimes a few others) so why should we drop them now cos the confidence has gone?

Got home last night and watched the highlights of the champs league and the in-form-ness of Rooney. It wasnt too long ago when he was shocking and missing everything and had a terrible goal scoring record. Varney is no Rooney, but he gives 100% as well as Holland who worked his socks off last night doing the job for 3 people in midfield as Bailey seems to have lost the ability to play football and Ambrose looks knackered after 5 minutes and is always in the wrong place. no spacial awareness between the 3 of them and always standing together and not getting into a gap to give or receive the ball.

Everyone started brightly last night and I was rubbing my hands with glee thinking we were going to win 3 or 4 nil in the first 10 minutes but when they scored, it was devestating to the fans and the players, and I think the spirit needs to be lifted, and that rests on pards to motivate them and the crowds shoulders to keep on fighting.
  • "Varney is no Rooney" Ain't that the truth! ;o)

The difference is that Rooney has consistantly done the business in the past. Form comes and goes but you know that he has the ability.

Can we really say the same about Varney? I like the bloke for his effort and workrate but I would question whether he has what it takes in front of goal.

Either put him on the wing where he won't be under so much pressure to score or give him a spell in the reserves to build his confidence. Either way we can't keep carrying a striker that seems to freeze in front of goal.

But we're so good at it.

to be fair to the guy, he plays for charlton athletic not manchester united!!!! i was just saying that all good strikers have blips in their games at times. no matter how good they are or who they play for.

I accept that but my point is when has Varney scored consistantly enough for us to dismiss his current situation as a "blip"?

I want to be wrong but I have a real concern that Varney lacks the composure in front of goal required at this level.

    Yeah.....:o)
  • I rest my case!......
  • Oh dearie me

I'm afraid those defending Varney are going to have to wake up and smell the coffeee.

How many gilt-edged chances does this guy miss?

He's worse than Lisbie in front of goal - by far!!!!!
  • I know you can't defend constant misses but it's what a lack of confidence does for you. If he was confident he would have bulged the net after rounding the keeper.

I feel for him because his attitude is excellent and he works his arse off for the team. Really hope he gets a lucky goal soon for his and the team's sake.
  • Have to agree with the last 3 comments, I left the day happy with a decent 2nd half display but at the same time so annoyed at Varney, the header and the 1 round the keeper where 2 glorious opportunities and you would back most strikers to put both away, totally lacking in confidence in front of goal. Might not hurt him for a run in the reserves and maybe get some confidence however I'm not hopeful in the long run he will prove to be anything more than the new Lisbie
  • Not even the new Lisbie. Could you ever imagine him scoring a hat-trick against Liverpool?
  • That hat-trick still seems like something that happened in a parallel universe.
  • You cant deny the fact that Varney is a winger and that is where he should be played.

He is a good enough player in this league in the right position
  • He was the player who worked his socks off all game and in my opinion MOM.
Absolutely horrendous miss and possibly inesxcuable but if we had 11 players who worked as hard as him then we wouldnt be far off teh top half.
  • I'm sure nobody would knock Varney's workrate, but that alone wont win us games. His finishing is woeful, and i'm certain he'd be far more effective playing wide midfield and cutting inside. Nice to see Izzy back but suprised,(i suppose i shouldn't be ) that he leapfrogged right over Dickson to get a start when he hasn't played for so long.

  • We can't keep playing a striker who can't finish.

Gray and Toddy do well in the link-up man role, we need a finsher in there with them, and the only one we have is Dickson.
  • Varney's approach to that chance was all about lack of confidence.

This is the man who scored a brace against Palace last season so why was he afraid to shoot once he went round Jensen?

Maybe as fans we share part of the blame.

Perhaps but the two misses were shocking (the header and when we went around the keeper) and he is a pro.

For the first time I think I heard stunned silence. After the initial groans there was a spell when everyone went quiet and must have been think "how did he not score?"

    I though McLeod looked sharp.

Same 16 v Ipswich with the same team that started the second half at kick off please but with McLeod in for Varney. Let him come on and run at them with 10 minutes to go.
  • edited October 2008
Agree about McLeod but all the same was surprised he started.

    Is Dicko injured?
  • absolutely shocking miss. impossible to defend i'm afraid.
  • Unfortunately i love varns and would say he needs a few reserve games to improve his confidence! bring in mcleod til then!
  • [cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite]I though McLeod looked sharp.

Agreed and unlucky to have been substituted but something major was needed at half time.
  • In the last 3 games he has missed 5 sitters. It is getting ridiculous now. He does work hard but a striker when given the opportunities needs to take at least ‘some’ of them. Stick him out on the right hand side of midfield where he would be more use and take the pressure of him, as being a striker does not seem to be him at the moment.

    Yeah, as a marble.
  • A striker who's afraid to miss shouldn't be in the team.
