  • Finished 0-0, clean sheet for Mambo, must have done his job.
  • I went and have to say he didn't stand out. Won a lot in the air and had a good header at goal well saved but was a little hesitant and slow to react early on. Couple of times his man lost him and won space while Mambo was turned once in the box.

Seemed to improve as the game went on but the Welling keeper was MOTM not Mambo.

Would have liked to have seen him in a foot race with a forward but never happened.

Still his first first class match with a team he only joined this week and Braintree looked a decent side. He's very young and he's there to get experience and that is what he is getting.
  • Sounds like he did ok, probably a bit nervous. He was meant to be nervous when we played them in the friendly, so not a surprise if he was again. Is only 17 as well, will get better with experience.

Is Charlie Mitten still playing in goal for the Wings? Went to school with him. Nice bloke. Was a cracking left winger. Another one of those forced to go in goal scenarios if I remember rightly.

Has done the rounds of Kentish non-league teams, Gillingham, Margate, Dover, Welling.....
  • Charlie Mitten was listed in the programme.

Made a few outstanding saves to keep Welling in the game.
  • And Mambo wore the number 5 shirt.

i often wondered what happened to charlie Might pop down and see him
  • If Sky Sports live score centre is right, Welling lost 2-0 at home today.

Did anyone go today? Be interesting to hear how Mambo did and if any of the goals were due to his mistakes.

My father-in-law did the double header and went straight to Welling after our game. He said Mambo was poor and was surprised he was left on for the full 90mins. Really struggled with the Newport forward who scored both goals.

He reckons that the loan is probably doing Mambo few favours, he is playing in a very very poor Welling side that was severly lacking in confidence. Apparently Welling basically gave up when the 2nd goal and were lucky not to get a real hammering.

I guess any sort of competitive action will help his development, but I do wonder whether a team struggling in what is effectively division 6 is really the best place for him to be.
  • i did a double header and went to cray wanderers who lost 2-1 to canvey island.Had a chat with callum o'shea who was released in the summer (played for youth tea last year).Injured at the moment nice kid.Has a trial lined up with Cork City in January.

  • Oh dear, that doesn't sound too good. I suppose the only good thing is he got 90 minutes of football under his belt.
  • It'll toughen up Mambo, open his eyes to the reality of playing competively, the mentality side of the game, and how to look after himself.

He's gone there a boy against men - experienced players who know every trick in the book, and a few that aren't.

As long as he's only there for a short loan. When he gets back to Charlton he should have added a few dimensions to his play, and the club will work on improving his technique and reading of the game.
  • He's still only 17, very young for a centre back. If they really are low on confidence maybe he isn't showing his best form, but it'll do him good.

As someone who has bemoaned the fact that we let Turner go (yes I know we were in the Premiership da da da) the last thing I want to see is us to give up on another young centre back.

However, I saw Mambo play in the youth Cup against Spurs and he simply couldn't live with Jon Obika on the deck. My son (a Welling season ticket holder) has seen him play in all his matches for them and the issue remains the same so far as his lack of mobility is concerned. He has time to get better and perhaps with a quick partner alongside him he will be seen in a better light but if this really is "work experience" then I'm afraid, in what is a poor Welling side, I'm really not sure how good the "experience" will be for him.
  • Bear in mind that he's 17 and was loaned to Welling before we signed Sodje so I would think that the powers that be appreciate that he's not ready for first team action and that throwing in would possibly harm rather than assist in his development.

Give him time and a couple of years and let's see how he develops. The best CB's tend to mature a bit later than most footballers so time is well on his side.
  • The boy is only 17 and may have temporarily outgrown his strength given that, by all accounts, he is a brick outhouse in the making physically.

Judge him in a year or two. Rufus was 19 when he came into the side and when I saw him a year or so before that I was convinced Primus would make it and he wouldn't. He looked too much like Bambi on ice at that time. Shows what I know! I similarly saw a young Fortune look a bit of a mug in a pre season match against Sittingbourne when he was a whippersnapper.

Mambo has the attributes as far as I can tell he just needs time.
  • He would learn a lot more playing alongside someone like Christian Dailly in the Reserves than playing at Welling but that isn't going to happen soon for obvious reasons.
  • As I posted above, playing in Welling's games will toughen up and help him develop the physical and mental sides of his game.

    In a word - experience.

For all the coaching he'd get in the youth team set up and reserves, you can't teach experience.

    video here

    Welling's manager sounds suicidal. . . .
  • As he's on "work experience" rather then a loan he can still train and play for Charlton in reserve games and U18 games etc if eligible.

If there is another behind closed doors game this week (likely I would say with many prem teams not playing due to international games and wanting to give their others players a run out) then he can play alongside Sodje.

When I saw him at Welling he didn't impress but maybe this is just part of developing him as as Len (I'm sure those chips aren't good for you Len BTW) Glover says Rufus and Fortune might not have coped that well at the same age.

What matters is how he reacts and learns from three defeats against three of the top teams in the league.

[cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]As I posted above, playing in Welling's games will toughen up and help him develop the physical and mental sides of his game.

For all the coaching he'd get in the youth team set up and reserves, you can't teach experience.

The issue is more that not only are the Welling fans not warming him to him but, with the results as they are, he may well be back with us sooner rather than later. For that reason I suggested that he might do better playing alongside an experinced Pro like Christian Dailly in a less pressurised environment and that he might learn more in the process.

He is only 17 and whilst Welling aren't a full time Professional Club they can't afford to carry someone in what is one of the most important positions in the team. Equally, it ain't going to do his confidence any good to be on the receiving end week in week out.

You might have a good point if Christian Dailly played in our reserves , but as he doesn't ?

I can understad your points Addict. I just watched the Wings game and listened to their manager, (he sounds like he knows he's on borrowed time, as Falcs pointed out). First Wings have got no money ("over budget", as quoted) so they can't bring anyone in, they're also a physically short and lightweight side, and they've got a bit of an injury list - and no confidence, bereft almost.

Mambo, he looked a bit unsure what to do and was caught in two minds a few times on the highlights video.
Time and time again the Welling left back was skinned up field; team shape surrendered, Mambo came lumbering across to close down but then caught out of position himself as the cross came in.

But this Welling side look a pretty clueless and dispirited lot ... communication zilch, no fight, no spark, no idea.

That's why I said "someone like". Sodje will need to get match fit and he's not going to sitting on the bench and I'm sure he could learn a thing or two from him.

He certianly isn't learning anything from being at Welling apart from how to get used to losing. They were beaten 2-0 for the third consecutive game last night, this time to the then bottom Club Maidenhead and as a result are now themselves in the relegation zone.
  • See my post above Addict, for a little overview of Welling and their plight.

It looks desperate for them ..... no clue, no fight, no hope.

I can't disagree with anything you've said Oggy. The loss of the likes of Charlie Sherringham from last season's side has meant that goals for are at a premium and as we know only too well from our plight in the last few yearsthat. once you do go a goal down, the heads drop and defeat becomes a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy.

The other aspect of it is that the rest of the Welling team are playing for "boot" money only i.e. this is their second job and they will not have the same sort of career aspirations as a young Pro on loan. And that is reflected in their play when things aren't going right.

Yado looked fine alongside Fortune and then Llera at Forest Green who are a level above Welling. I think our defence last year lacked organisation and confidence, so that whoever came in looked average or worse until Ward arrived and managed to galvanise them into a unit.

Welling sound in similar strife, so unless Yado works out what's needed himself, it's probably a wasted loan. Hopefully he can get alongside an experienced centre-back soon.

I do think who he plays alongside makes a difference. Youga has looked terrible alongside defenders that aren't organised and don't help him out.

After the Welling game we had a few on here saying Mambo was better than Llera. Anyway I'm sure Steve Gritt or others at the club are keeping an eye on him, if they don't think it's helping him they'll end the loan.
  • Scored today, welling won 2-1, well done Yads.
  • Yeah well done
