CHELSEA/CHARLTON STAMFORD BRIDGE

Hi Everybody

I am a new member and have the following question for you all.

I am having a discussion with one of my colleagues who supports Chelsea and trying to recall a match at Stamford bridge in late 70's or 80's concerning the old relegation playoffs from division one which we won either to send them straight down or into the play offs.

Can anybody help me out with the answer or is all this Takeover news sending me a bit funny.

Many thanks

You mean the battle of Stamford Bridge in 1988?
  • We drew 1-1 at the bridge which put them in to the playoffs against middlesborough over a two legged playoffs in 1988? I think....

Paul Miller drew us level and it was called the battle of the bridge...and leaburn got knocked and allegedly said to the chelsea player.... 'i best not see you in lewisham'

  • Wasn't it a bridge too far in 1987?
  • yes 87 mad mad day

We played Chelsea on the last day of the 1987-88 season. We needed a draw to stay up, they needed a win to avoid the play-offs. Chelsea scored through a dubious early penalty after Gordon Durie was apparently tripped just outside the box. Paul Miller equalised in the second half with a deflected shot. We held on to the point that took us to safety. I seem to remember the tube journey home being a bit hairy!

Chelsea played Middlesbrough from the 2nd Division over two legs. They lost on aggregate 2-1 and the fans rioted at Stamford Bridge after the game.
  • Saturday 7th May 1988. Stamford Bridge. Att 34,174

    Chelsea 1 (1) (Durie (pen) 16) Charlton Athletic 1 (0) (Miller 65)

Chelsea: Hitchcock, Clarke, Dorigo, Wicks, McLaughlin, Pates, Nevin, Bumstead, Dixon, Durie, C Wilson (West 68). Unused sub: K Wilson.

Charlton: Bolder, Humphrey, Reid, Mackenzie, Shirtliff, Miller, Stuart (Mortimer 64), Leaburn, Bennett (Jones 46), Lee, Crooks.

    Referee: D Reeves (Uxbridge)

Penalty awarded against Humphrey for a foul on Durie, which was later proved to be outside the area.

Cool it: Leaburn was knocked unconscious during the second half and had to be restrained by colleagues when he came round.

Play-Offs: A vital match for both clubs. Charlton had to avoid defeat to miss the dreaded play-offs for a second successive season whereas Chelsea needed to win. In the event, Charlton got their precious point and Chelsea dropped out of the top divsion when they were defeated by Middlesbrough in the play-off final.

Referee Darryl Reeves said after the match " In 13 years as a match official, and eight years on the line, I have never been involved in a more tension filled match.
  • what a day out that was, quality result, totally unexpected too. Plenty of trouble in the ground and outside, it did indeed send them into a play off with Boro and there was more or less a riot in the ground when they lost to them.
  • Remember getting locked in afterwards. Seemed like around 20/30 mins, and once we were let out the Chesea lot were baying for trouble.

Kicked off in the our end, when chelsea scored.

  • Like your style charltonheston - first question is an old charlton question. now what is the next one?

any new member should be treated with caution everyone... he could be a journalist!

    :-)
  • Re the penalty being outside the area- John Humphrey made the tackle on Durie and pointed out to the ref as he was getting booked that when he sees it on TV he'll see that it was outside the box. Apparently the ref the replied 'And when you see it on TV, you'll see yourself getting a yellow card!'

I think the player that Leaburn was trying to get to was Steve Wicks. I remember Mickey Bennet (who'd been subbed earlier) running on to the pitch to help calm Carlo down!
  • The Battle of Stamform Bridge was fought in 1066 won by the last true King of The English(Harold) against an aliance of Scots and Vikings. The Vikings came in hundreds of boats but what was left of their army went home in less than 40.

The English army then walked down to hastings and fought a battle against The Normans on the 12 th October 1066.------------------------- We lost.

    RIP King Harold.

as for the other one been mentioned 100 times on here. 1 v1 on the pitch off it Chelsea came third !!!!!!!

It was indeed an absolute crazy day. I think most of us that went are lucky to still tell the tale.
  • I am new on here i attend a game at a large ground in North London i think the game ended 4/4 but cant remember who we played
  • Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee best away game nailed on ever. Didnt see Chelsea day except making a very sharpeish exit from our end. They werent at Earls Court or at Viliers Street --- safest i have ever felt at the Bridge.
  • I have been following the club since 1705, who remembers the soccer sixes?
  • A Huge away Support that day as well Ooh Aah !
  • Great day...............After that game i think Chelsea always thought twice when they played us, barmy
  • great day out! remember there was a big rugby match on that day as well and as we were walking up the embankment towards Charing cross we had a rather unfriendly Chelsea mob on our tails but luckly the station was a mass of red and white who infact were Wigan (I think) rugby fans but the Chelsea mob did not hang about long enough to realise that! lol

  • never saw any chelsea mob that day at all
  • Seems quite a few of todays regulars from CAFC were there that day, I wonder how many of Chelsea (that GH didn't damage ;-) ) still go, or can afford to?
  • Chirpy had a great day only thing i saw was in the ground -- they never turned up and even when asked where "they" were you get an abstract answer.
  • I saw the punk lady who steamed in that day working in a holiday camp as a waitress in Norfolk last summer. I had a long chat with her (So much so she got into trouble with her boss lol) about the old days and especially that Chelsea game.
  • Paul Miller was never one of my most popular players, but that day he was absolutely immense.

That team was full of characters who knew how to dig when the going got really tough. Legends the whole lot of them.
  • I am new and not a jounalist, in case you think I am.

I was at the game. When it kicked off in our end, the Chelsea tykes were led out of our end and 'escorted' straight in to the Chelsea end!

Seem to remember the Paul Miller goal being a double deflection, but beer and fear may have affected my memory of the day. Will have to watch the video when I get home, albeit from behind the couch as it is much scarier than Dr Who, even though I know the outcome.
  • who was who got knocked out? Was it Leaburn? then got up and wanted to take the world on! lol
  • I Miller was trying to kick it into row Z and miscued it. Thats why it was such a brilliant goal
  • Always loved Miller ... for his goal and for his littel sly kick on Ian Baird during the Leeds playoffs....
  • Was Miller the one who ended up getting the sack for spitting at someone?
