Our Best Up Front Combination

edited September 2008 in General Charlton
When I first saw Andy Gray I have to say I was suprised - suprised because I remember him as a winger but now he seems to lack any ability to turn & beat players. I'm also not sure that he is a genuine target man and for that reason I really would love to see Pards give Dickson a run in the side.

Toddy will "do a job" when fit but I doubt that he's capable of playing 30 games a season. The jury is still out on McCleod and Fleetwood.

Dickson is a rough diamond but he is also the one player we have who is likely to do the less obvious and I would love to see Pards giving him a run in the side. Varney is deceptively good in the air and whilst he does like to drift wide and cut inside onto his right foot, I would like to see him playing more through the middle - the added responsibiltiy of being the "senior partner" might also do him no harm from a confidence perspective.

So Dickson and Varney it is for me. You?

  • I like the idea of Gray running the frontline with Dickson working around him, big handful to keep central defenders busy - and Varney, nominally playing winger, but in reality given a free role.

Reckon he's lethal like that - channels to run from deeper, good crossing, good shot - and impossible to mark or pick up.

Could we be strong enough in midfield to go 4-3-3 like that?

  • now we're talking - with Moutu and Kelly bombing forward to boot. The Dream Ticket won't happen as long as Curbs is Manager though..........
  • Crainie's going to be right back ........
  • tell you what, thas not a bad looking effort from cafc_se7, not bad at all

    Moutouakil Hudson Cranie Basey

    Ambrose Bailey ZZ Bouazza

    Gray Varney

I don't think Dickson has enough experience yet but I suppose you only get that with playing. He'll get his chance soon. And I hope he does!!

  • cafc_se7 you know how to make a man go moist!
  • I thought I'd bump this thread, before it slipped below the radar.

Might be best to get back on topic though, rather than discuss Mark Webb's rather excitable reaction ......!!!!
  • haha come on oggy, its a pretty mouthwatering line up!! would love to see it given a crack in home games, but to be fair we could end up a little narrow, either that or expose down the flanks, particularly the right.
  • Weaver
    Moo2 Hudson Fortune Youga
    Sam ZZ Bailey Bouaza
    Dicko Varney
  • Varney and Gray are doing fine and will improve the more they play together and will score more now that our midfield looks half decent.

    When everybody fit:

    Weaver

    -Cranie--Hudson--Primus--Youga-

    -Moo2----Bailey----Zhi----Bouazza--

    Varney
    Gray

Subs: Elliot, Todorov, Semedo, Racon, Ambrose
  • It seems that the general belief is that Andy Gray has now found his feet and is worth his place in the team.

Despite Varney's admirable work rate it has to be accepted that his goals to chances ratio has been poor this season. Is it time to give Dickson a run alongside Gray?
  • Sorry don't agree.

Varney's work rate is making the chances and space for Gray to shine. Got to give them more games together 5 or 6 games is not enough - what with a newish midfield as well for them to get used to as well.

We chopped and changed last season and look where that got us.

Wiat for ZZ to get back as well.

Add to the fact that two of Grays goals were penalties both won by Varney i think they are looking usefull.

As ledge says give it time
  • As evidenced by the fact that Pards retained the side that got hammered on Saturday I think he's realised that this season he needs to maintain a solid base and not keep making changes for changes sake.

However, Varney's main job has to be to score goals and I would guesstimate that he has probably taken one from approximately ten to a dozen chances he's had from 7 games this season. That simply isn't good enough and as I do have a little niggle at the back of my mind that Varney "freezes" in front of goal I would like to see Dickson given a run especially as he will offer something "different" to what we have at present.
  • Varney works Hard for the team & whilst he continues to put in those sort of shifts it's difficult to leave him out. He was poor last night, but worked hard AGAIN, as soon as that level of effort drops then drop him not before.

I agree with you to a certain extent and think that Varney should be given a few more games however, there does come a point when working hard just isn't enough especally when the missed chances are costing us games.
  • As I've already said I'm not doubting his work ethic but that simply won't be enough if we have any aspirations to get out of the Division. Varney's record for us is 9 goals in 32 starts (plus 17 as sub) which probably equates (if you include the subs) to approximately one goal every 4 matches.

Equally, I do not believe that Gray is a prolific goalscorer (88 in 314 starts plus 67 subs) which is why I opted for the Varney/Dickson combo at the start of this thread but as Varney seems to have lost all confidence in front of goal and Gray is looking more assured I am suggesting leaving Varney out for Dickson.

Dickson has a career record of 8 from 11 starts plus 13 sub appearances which equals one in two approximately albeit at a lower level (mostly at Gillingham).

So are we really saying that as long as Varney works his socks off all season and gets us 10 or so goals that he will have done his job whilst, meantime, we have a potential goalscorer sitting on the bench for the duration? Let's also not forget that we have only once scored more than one goal once in the last 6 matches.

    .

But Varney's record at a lower level with Crewe was as impressive as Dicksons (17 in 31 starts + 3 subs plus another 7 in the cup in his last season there)

The best striker and the best goal scorer at the club has yet to start this season: Todorov.

For all Dickson's potential I would pick Toddy ahead of him every time.

    Swansea and Reading
  • Well, bald statistics can mean anything that you want to make from them.

So Gray has scored 88 goals in 314 starts - but what that doesn't tell you is that he played all but his last few seasons in midfield. Since he was switched to striker a few seasons ago, he scored 25 goals in 58 appearances for Sheff Utd and 25 goals in 60 appearances for Burnley.

That equates to roughly a 20 goals a season man - or is that not prolific enough for you?

He might have only scored twice for Charlton last season - but he still finished on 15 goals.
    Respectable enough for a striker.
  • Swansea and Reading - don't we count the mighty Yeovil?
  • [cite]Posted By: Addick Addict[/cite]Swansea and Reading - don't we count the mighty Yeovil?

Better to count the last 6 league games as they are the ones that matter IMHO
  • and I'm sure you wouldn't be going had we reached the Final!!

    Good point.

If we are scoring enough goals to win games keep it as it is. Varney will start scoring soon and as you say he has "assisted" two of Gray's goals.
