One thing i don't like with the Curbs thing.......

edited September 2008 in General Charlton
For the first time, Pardew will be working with a cloud hanging over him.

I can see it now, every time something goes wrong, those fans that spent years saying Lisbie was rubbish, Iwelumo was rubbish, and then complain why did we get rid of them, will be licking their lips at this one.

We lose a couple of games and it will be sack Pards and bring back Curbishley. You wait and see.

Things like that can have a very destructive impact.

    Don't be so ridiculous!

Never sang his name while he was here which mightly p*****D him off when he heard APRAWA at the 4 - 0 game.

Humble apologies, you are quite right we did sing his name, not as often as might have been expected given his length of service and success, but we did. Silly of me to say "never".

I wonder how much of the coolness about Curbs is down to his slightly distant public persona or to the whole Gritt goes/Curbs stays incident.

Despite Gritt having managed Millwall and Curbs having had so much success I would guess that many fans, older ones at least, would have more affection for Gritty than Curbs. Am I wrong
  • I bet The Reames Machine is working overtime right now...he simply loves this kind of thing which leaves the door wide open for wild speculation and day dreaming on his part re Pardew leaving the club.
  • There was no real calls for his head from the fans last season.

I see Kelvin the Keech talking about sacking him again this morning....

I can see him dreaming up a Kim Grant & Curbs partnership already!

    Good lord:

    http://bythesword.co.uk/?p=153

    It's started over there already!
  • We did sing Alan C's red and white army. It's not our fault he had a silly surname!

  • I can't see it myself. I am and have always been a Curbs fan but Pards is our manager, there is no vacancy and I can't see Curbs wanting to be back here or the fans clamouring for him to come.

There was great respect here for him amongst most fans but his slightly dispassionate public personality made it hard for most to become emotionally attached to him in the way that say the Geordies are to Keegan. He was rather more like a headmaster who is reverred and who instantly commanded our respect, and then in later years reflect upon as being a huge influence upon our lives; whereas Keegan is like your favourite teacher who's passion for their subject got your pulse racing and led to your love of that subject and somebody you will always remember with great fondness.

So will it affect Pards? No I don't think so.
  • and right on queue, the Spurs fan in the office comes over and say 'do you reckon you'll go back in for Curbishley?'

any one else had that this morning ?

I wondered if that was a figment of my imagination too! I'm sure that was aired a few times but as no one seemed to mention it i thought i might have dreamt it!
  • he just couldn't take us to the next level and kept falling out with all his players and once you crossed him, well that was it.the football became stale for the last 5 years and we are much better off without him.who's laughing now curbs you tit?
  • Regardless of the fact we're in the championship, I think I've enjoyed watching Charlton since Pardew took over a lot more then I did during Curbishley's reign, championship-winning season excepted.

If I had to watch one more season of us hitting the 40 points mark and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

As above we sang Alan C's for years! He is on a level Pardew will never reach.

I think that has more to do with the championship v Permiership than Curbs v Pards

well last season hitting 50 points (yeah but we are still 5th) on 8th of feb and finishing 11th on 4th of may with 14 more points with pards (my teams finish the season stronger),just didn't do it for me.
  • lets not knock Curbs FFS its over -- gone----past---- behind us.

dont want him back other than a fan.

    Halelujah, GH!

Curbs was immense for us at times and, together with Richard Murray, he was instrumental in building up and progressing our club - in the same way as Jimmy Seed did, less we forget, generations earlier.

Like Seed, Curbs is no longer the manager at this club.

Maybe it's time for Charlton fans to move on?
    Curbs has.

Agreed Oggy but there are still tw*** who try to lay the blame for all our ills at Curbs' door.

In such circumstances those of us who appreciate the magnificent job he did at our beloved Club will quite properly leap to defend him against unwarranted slurs.
  • I think the majority of the supporters except that Curbs has moved on and i'm sure most thank him and wish him well in the future (England Job ?).
But , as has been pointed out , he's GONE and now we have Pardew in the No.1 position.
Personally , i think the football over the last 12/18 months has been better ; Curbs had his (dour ?) style and , in my opinion , Pards is alittle more attack minded. The team also seem to be playing with the ball "on the deck" more.
  • i'll have what you're having!

No there are not Len, i've never heard one single person say that.

I have heard those that say that they weren't enjoying it anymore near the end, that things had gone stale, that the squad that was left wasn't strong enough and would likely be relegated, but i've not seen anyone blaming Curbs for all our ills.

Why do we need to have this debate every time ????
  • Because people keep starting discussions about him. ;-)
  • Hasn't relegation caused all our ills?

If we got relegated because of the weak squad Curbs left (according to his detractors NOT me!) then by definition they are blaming Curbs for all our ills.
  • yes, curbs would have kept us up.

Curbishley isn't to blame for "all our ills" but neither is a totally blameless either.

You must have been wearing very thick rose tinted glasses for the last couple of years of the curbishley era if you think that the clubs problems only started when he left.

Anyway, as has been said above he's gone and everyone should move on. Pardew is the manager and we should give him all our support.
