Racon and Shelvey worked well and even thogh quiet Shelvey didnt really put a foot wrong he was just not as action packed as he would have liked took the best corners we have had down here for ages.
we got to remember all teams will have heard of shelvey so going to b harder 4 him. should silence the boo boys. cant complain 3 points and a clean shEet to boot.
[cite]Posted By: pete_tong1[/cite]Shelvey should have his head held high he was against a 5 man midfield. Head was a bit down. Setup up our 1st goal thats all he needs to do.
Basey should start. Hudson was man of the match and fortune was good.
Can't disagree with any of this....
Adding detail-
Shelvey had a great first 30 or so- he's very young so needs to develop physically...
Basey's ball for our 2nd was excellent- JT- that''s what you should be doing- not passing to anyone who is within 10ft...
Fortune had a "Ronseal" match- he just did what he needed to- saved the day a couple of times though!
Hudson's tackle early on stopped a fairly certain goal.....
More contenciously (sp) two partnerships that need to be given time to mature- Racon/Shelvey and Gray/Varney- it's not going to be perfect to start but come the business end of the season ie- Jan/Feb, when they really know each other, that's when it will come good......
Carm on you Reds!
(Oh and i think Swansea play good football and hope they stay up!)
Can't fault any of the players today including Jon Fortune who got us out of gaol a couple of times as Stanmore said.
It looked like Jonjo was down when he was substituted but for me he did fine and how nice to have a player who can take a corner!
If I wanted to be critical it would be to say that we didn't seem to create much from open play despite Thomas and Sam having the beating of the full backs but you can't moan when you've got 3 points.
Well, given all the doom and gloom that has been around from many over the last few weeks it's good to actually read about and discuss real matches. From the sound of it some decent performances defensively, and from the young midfielders, a striker scored and both goals from set pieces, a decent loan signing, possibly more signings to come and room for improvement elsewhere. I'd have settled for that at 3.00pm today.
I think that Jonjo had more of a defensive role today which is why he showed less of his great skill. He certainly shouldn't be disappointed with what he did - the corner kick alone which led to the first goal was better than 90% of the corner kicks last year. Just seeing him on the field, knowing that he is so young and has come through our academy and loves the club, fills me with pleasure and hope for the future.
Agreed, Jonjo had a good first 60 minutes. But well done Pards for getting Holland on when he did. I thought Matty helped enormously in securing the victory & it was good to see him bossing all the other players around, even though he wasn't captain. We are going to rely on Matt Holland a lot this year to help his young midfield partners cope with the game at this level.
Lots of good comments on here and what a nice change to all the negativity that was on here before the first game. I know one game dont make a season but we couldn't have asked for much more. Roll on next week
I thought Jonjo did okay for 50-odd minutes but he and Therry were up against it with their five man midfield. In a way it may give everyone, Jonjo included, a small reality check. He's sixteen, and can't be expected to play every game, can't be expected to play 90 minutes of those he does play, and can't be expected tp perform well every time he plays. Every minute he does play means he is gaining valuable experience and that is what it is all about. He'll have some good games, he'll have some stinkers no doubt too, but he'll learn from all of it and become a better player for it. I'm just happy for him to do it for Charlton.

Well 2 out of the 3 he took were ok. The 3rd was awful. He (JJ) did not look the same player to me as the one who played against Cventry last season. He just did not get involved at all. He's only 16 FFS! I really do not think it is the right thing for a player of such limited experience to begin a campaign in the starting XI. He has as much promise as SP did, but we must be patient.

Would your comments be the same if he didn't start him today and we had lost. Like many i think you would have been saying why didn't he play jonjo. What's age got to do with having the ability to play football??? Agreed he needs experience and if i'm not mistaken you get that from playing games. As for the 3rd one being awful was you actually there today???

Chirpy has already said that he was disinterested today and spent the second half reading the programme so he was there in body but not in spirit !! Unfortunately, Jonjo is going to have to be prepared to take some criticism albeit constructive. If we are saying what has age got to do with it as if he's good enough he's old enough then criticism comes with territory although you'd hope most would realise he's still learning the game and he'll actually learn more from todays game than he would if they had played four across the middle and we had cantered to a four nil win.
I agree with criticism but lets make it constructive not just say awful. He did learn a lot today and will continue to learn every game he plays i. I am under no illusion that he did not perform to he's potential.

Our midfielders often performed a lot worse than Jonjo did today last season. As you say he'll learn from that.
The worry for me is that because we've seen flashes of just how good he can be a moronic minority amongst our fans might expect 46 games of brilliance from a 16 year old which is unrealistic for all sorts of reasons. Inexperience, still growing etc, etc.
My view is that anything we get from Jonjo is a bonus and today we got an assist via a corner and it could have been two but for some good goalkeeping.
Yeah i thought he held his own nothing special but corners were put in good places and with enough pace on them. Thought everyone did well today good team performance and good management making the right changes at a time they needed to be made

yes, thought the subs were spot on although Sam should have been off much earlier.
I started reading my programme when he (JJ) went off actually. I have my own interest in the lad, from a different angle than his uncle BTW.
I did not slag him off. I did not slag anyone off.
Age and experience means absolutely everything in any profession, football or otherwise, Having both, I know that. I am not expecting too much from the lad. Lets not get carried away. I do not think he is the right player to start right at the beginning of the season. I think that is fair comment.
And as a pro footballer, whether you're 16 or 36, 2/3 is NOT good enough.
Chirpy no one said anything about slagging off and imo if i had a striker that scored 2 out of every 3 shots he had i would be very happy. On another post you said jt goes past players like no one in this league or the prem. Now who's getting carried away

No I didn't. I said he takes the ball first time on his foot like no other player in this league or Prem - which is true.

I think thats is good enough if we scored from one of them. Which we did. I would be very happy if he took 5 corners every game and four were bad but one was excellent and we scored from it. That would be much better than last year

It's better than our other corner takers!!
I've gone about our corners for years Len, years! Even Jensen was poor.

IMO Racon was man of match
Basey should start. Hudson was man of the match and fortune was good.

Sorry Chirpy, but that's rubbish.
