  • as we appear to be reminiscing over this one again, I thought I'd add my (brief) memories of this boozer - I remember when I used to be a student at the local college in Highcombe and we used to sneak there at lunchtime for a bit of swift under-age drinking. That is, until the head teacher followed a load of us one day and sent us back. Mind you, he was pretty decent about it, he'd waited until we'd bought our drinks before he showed up and then said to us 'finish your drink and get back to class'!!!!
  • [cite]Posted By: ken from bexley[/cite]Hi,
T.C.E. I just read you are an old Springfield boy, So am I.....
I lived in Langhorne, and used to play football on the lower pitch every Sunday, in the late 60's......
Used to play football all the time, Do you remember Mick Mc Carthy! ...... before that I lived in Elliscombe Mount, across the road from the Valley pub, remember when it was built!

The off licence used to sell 'Orangener' sort of toxic orange juice. Didnt Jack Hobbs used to run the pub ex Charlton player! seemed a moody old git to me!

But then I had long hair, played on the wing and fancied being the local George Best, went to art school and went bald!, all those Blackheath parties I guess.

Had one of my Stagg nights at the Valley, ( well I was an art student at the time)...

It was all skinheads and Dr Matens in those days, had to be a quick runner to survive even in the 60s......

Hi Ken, sorry mate I've just seen this. The name Mick Mc Carthy certainly rings a bell, I was trying to remember a few names before answering a couple brothers that went by the surname "Smith" Robin Walker I cant remember others the memory is shot to pieces. I played football on the lower pitch possibly around 66/68.
I lived in Wilson House and played as a "nipper" in "The Hollow Oak" remember the tree? I originally played for Anchor Athletic who met up in Charlton House and drunk in the Bugle, and from the went to Springcourt FC who drunk in The Valley, that was in the days went was run by Phil Marron, we used to train on a tuesday night at Fossedene school, I remember being smashed into the radiators in the gym every week by Paul Arnold, Johnny Keyoe, Tony Mills, Marc Formolli, Chris Amstoy (sp) amongst others.
  • Hi TCE,
Yeah I went to Fossdene, then Sherrington and then Bloomfield.

Use to play football on the lower pitch with Eddy, Martin Chamberlain, Mick Jakaman.

My first girlfreind was Sonya McCarthy, big micks sister! he used to go to Eltham Green , and we used to drink in the Standard!/Fox under the Hill

Also used to play football on the green beetween the front two flats near the bus stop as well with peter Walker Robin was his younger brother! I bought my first car from Peter Walker an old mini!

Did you live on Springfield!, my mum used to live there until 10 years ago!.

Played football over Charlton Park on the green behind Charlton House! when I was a younger teenager.

We must know each other, all the kids knew each other, Yes I remember the Hollow oak and the Mulberry tree as well in Springfield.

I see Marc today, we've as good as worked together since we were kids, along with Wayne Manners whose son I believes reads this site, if you come off the "Orchard" you must remember the "Garveys" I knew of Mark (the original Charlton drummer) when I lived on Springfield, we all grew up, got married and moved away, my son comes as teenager with a new girlfriend its only Marks daughter Laura, they marry in september"" small world.
  • Yup, I remember the Garveys
  • I lived in Wilson House up from the tree, the same block as Terry Watson remember him?.....

I remember Tony Swain and his bigger brother, and Susan Smith from Marr House, we used to hang around the entrance to Marr and Priory ......the sort of thing that I would complain about now!

A lot of the older lads used to work in factories either in Charlton or Woolwich always had lots of cash but seemed to hate there jobs!

That is what made me work hard at school and pass some exams! and go on to get my degree!

A novel idea in those days, it was a different world, different values and stuck in the post war days!

Charlton was a release at the weekend, the only other thing was the Roxy at the weekend, or the midnight cinema in Woolwich on a Saturday night,

How Greenwich council screwed up Woolwich, with its crazy policies, and my grandfather was a ardent trade unionist!.

Got into music after that and college life.......

Thanks all above for confirming the Harold Hobbis link, was racking my brain about the link with a former player and was sure I'd read it somewhere and it must have been in that VOTV piece.
