  • Walked past The Valley pub earlier this evening - 6.15ish - and it had a "closed until further notice" sign in the window. Have they given up the ghost?

I know there was a planning application in for housing on that land a couple of years back.
  • was just about to say the Valley pub closed down about month ago and good riddence. Got roobed couple times in its final week too!! Loads of wrong uns in there and massive drug problem. Not anymore.....

  • I've only just spotted this thread and would like to add that somehow (not sure who told me...it might have been Mick Gibbett come to think of it), I got the word quite a while back that The Valley pub was going to close down....and evidently it has.
  • That's another bit of my childhood gone, second pub I ever got served in the first being the Bugle, must have been .......................14/15 at the time. Not that I'm saying its big to drink underage ;-) Light n Keg I believe, Mr Marron (sp) I salute you sir.
  • Used to love a pre match light and bitter at the watermans arms.
  • I remember the old git who ran the Watermans Arms, nasty pair of old racists they were too. Good riddance to them.

The Valley was my grandad's old local - went in there a few times around 1999/2000, and it wasn't bad, but didn't bother going back after it was taken over by some sad old sod who seemed to love having the bad lads in there, and whose Guinness tasted like it'd come out of the sewers. Went in there to kill an hour watching a match, left because they'd turned the big screen onto Blind Date, and never went back.

Hope someone salvages that big old photo of The Valley in there, though.
  • Shame was thinking of giving it ago
  • My mate is responsible for the missing football embossed glass emblem in the gents toilet door, he rammed a cocky millwall fans head into it about 12-15 year ago.
  • ha ha
So Another pub bites the dust

    What ones next?
  • Used to be my local for many years when I lived on Cherry Orchard Estate. Phil, who managed it at the time, was a great bloke.

As the Inspector said, I hope the big Valley picture was saved by someone.
  • had a robbery a while back and is currently closed
  • around the 1996-1998 this was the boozer to drink in,shame had many a good booze in there and the free hotdogs before the game and curry after were the nuts.Drove past it a month ago and it was the first time northstandjoe had seen it.When he saw the emblem outside the pub his response was cor well cool.As I said bloody shame.

There's a planning application in with Greenwich Council to demolish the pub and build nine flats on the site. (A past application was turned down on a technicality.)

    Planning documents available here.

Sad to see any pub go, it'd lost its way but a building of its size could be an asset to the local community as well as acting as a matchday boozer; doesn't look like that thought's entered anyone's mind.

Looked like there was someone in there just now - the curtains had been pulled open - but couldn't see anybody there. I'll have to keep an eye on the place and keep tabs on the big Valley picture.
  • its an odd one the valley pub, i lived in charlton for neigh on 21 years and must have been in there about 3 times, never was on anyones radar for a pre match pint always the bugle or swann or down on woolwich road. with the demise of horse and groom and the vic and other charlton pubs it is a real shame.

Yeah, had a few laughs up there over the years :)
  • Hi,
T.C.E. I just read you are an old Springfield boy, So am I.....
I lived in Langhorne, and used to play football on the lower pitch every Sunday, in the late 60's......
Used to play football all the time, Do you remember Mick Mc Carthy! ...... before that I lived in Elliscombe Mount, across the road from the Valley pub, remember when it was built!

The off licence used to sell 'Orangener' sort of toxic orange juice. Didnt Jack Hobbs used to run the pub ex Charlton player! seemed a moody old git to me!

But then I had long hair, played on the wing and fancied being the local George Best, went to art school and went bald!, all those Blackheath parties I guess.

Had one of my Stagg nights at the Valley, ( well I was an art student at the time)...

It was all skinheads and Dr Matens in those days, had to be a quick runner to survive even in the 60s......
  • Used to play pool in there before games, with Skel,Tharg,Swerve,O'Guff,Vanders,Postie, etc.
Was quite a decent pub back then.
Was told once that the club built it for Harold Hobbis, tho' not sure thats true.
    Shame to see it go.

Would still use it , but I can't walk up that bloody hill after games !

Harold Hobbis was the first licencee, when the pub was opened in the late 60's, built specifically for the local estate, I wrote the first VOTV pub guide on that subject way back in 92/93 I believe, if Rick's on maybe he can upload an electronic version (f he has one still?)

Harold Hobbis was the guvnor there in the 60,s when my Dad used to take me there when we lived in Victoria Way
  • They used to do a drink in there called 'velvet stout', god knows what was in that, probably a drink for old biddies!
As it was on the 'estate' it was my local although I was only a teenager when it was built.

Always felt is was a weird place for a pub!, not too sure many locals i.e. from the flats used to use it, but it had a decent juke box, I used to piss all the locals off playing anything that had a guitar riff!
But then there was always FA to do in Charlton in those days!. Has it changed!, if it has it aint for the better!.
