2.5m? Was he? How did I miss that?!Crispywood said:
I don’t even think it’s an athleticism problem because he works really hard but it’s clear Jones likes a defence/set piece approach first, which Bree is going to have over Apter every time. Seems weird for him to drop 2.5M on one player he knew he wasn’t 100% invested in from day 12121 said:My take (from limited games he has been in), is jones probably has a question mark over his athleticism to step up a level. Maybe Jones should have thought about this before he spanked £4m out on the pair of them then?!2121 said:My take (from limited games he has been in), is jones probably has a question mark over his athleticism to step up a level. Possibly the same with knibbs0 -
I like Apter and he has a lot of qualities. People say he's small, but hes very combative. He got replaced by Bree who then went flying, so no complaints. But if i was him I'd be asking questions as to why a bloke who by NJs own admission couldn't take a corner (could he even make a clearance?) then gets in ahead of me! Its all very odd...5

One thing I find odd about Jones, all our big money signings, Kelman, Knibbs, Apter, Oloafe, Ahadme, JRC, A.Mitchell just don’t seem to suit the system or he falls out with straight away the only other big money signing Kaminski is the only one hes fancied, whereas most of the freebies loans or cheap players have done brilliantly for himYTS1978 said:

I think the bigger the signing the less likely they are to completely buy into Jones' system of olay and the more likely they are to want to keep doing what they believe made them successful before, so they don't become Jones' players and so they get less game time than players who completely follow instruction.0

Not sure I understand spending 2 million on a player if you expect to do a job which is alien to him instead of using him to his strengths
Start of the season was playing as a winger alongside a front 3 as such and was a threat hence why he got player of the month for August
Dragging the lad of after 25 minutes today is more down to Jones’s tactical awareness of how Southampton play than his ability

I felt sorry for him today. To be hooked after 30 minutes is embarrassing and I’m not even sure he was to blame for any of the goals. Jones should never have signed him if he wasn't going to play wingers . He’s not a wing back , that’s quite clear .10

But if these are his chances of playing and he has spat the dummy a couple of times when subbed, so assume he does want to play he has to do as he’s asked and suck it up, plenty of players have played in teams not in they’re favoured position and been a success and been professional enough to accept it. He is young and needs to bide his time.shirty5 said:Not sure I understand spending 2 million on a player if you expect to do a job which is alien to him instead of using him to his strengths

Barring a sending off or an injury when was the last time someone got binned off that early in a game for usSword65pf said:

It was very apparent from both his body language and that of other players that he’s not “one of the lads”. He gave up tracking back and that’s pretty criminal in our style of playing.0

I was having the same discussion with my son and I can’t ever remember a player being hooked that early in a game and I’ve been watching Charlton for over forty years .shirty5 said:

Didn’t Small get subbed pretty early on one match last season?1

It doesn’t matter,It wasn’t working, he wasn’t doing his job defensively. If we start worrying about a players feelings we will be more in the shit. He will sink or swim. When Bree is fit and back he will back on the bench because recently he’s not done enough to displace him.shirty5 said:

Just from memory. Remember Covered End clapping him off as he walked round- think it was first half. Aren’t you the stats man?shirty5 said:

Square pegs in round holes then, but Jones had a fella who came on to replace him after 25 minutes who played a lot of Championship games for Blackburn Rovers in that same position last seasonSword65pf said:

As I said on the post match thread. He is not a wing back. He's a winger. We are asking him to play not only in a position which is alien to him but in a position to which he is not suited. It begs the question of why NJ signed him if he's not prepared to play him further up the pitch. Maybe because NJ stubbornly thought he could convert him into being a wing back but now realises he's not suited to it. That's on NJ, not Apter. The whole team was having a stinker yet NJ decided to hang Apter out to dry. Why not have subbed TC and moved Apter further up the pitch and bring on JRC. And I don't but this 'not one of the boys' and 'poor body language'. I'd be more concerned if he wasn't unhappy about being subbed. Let's see him further up the pitch before we start writing him off.13

lol as much as you like, stop being pussys and accept he’s not cutting it at the moment. He was unlucky to be dropped originally but done nothing to get back in although admittedly hasn’t had many chances, but won’t get many playing like he did today.11

He’s just not adapting. The skill and creativity he has is hard to teach but the defensive side can be trained. He needs to put his foot in and be aggressive when players run at him but he just doesn’t. He lets players just breeze by him and you can see how angry that makes Jones. The big problem as well is that his deliveries over the past games he’s played have been terrible. So many poor crosses that hit the first man so he’s not doing anything positive with the ball one way and he’s costing us goals the other. As dreadful as Hernandez was today he put some proper nasty challenges in on the right and at least made the Saints players work to get past him which stifled Scienza along with JRC marshalling him better. My sympathy for Apter is limited when Jones has clearly told him he can’t let people ghost past him and then he’s trailing in their wake after not putting his foot in. He can still come good with time but he’ll get more time to show what he’s about on the pitch once he starts putting himself about properly1

Who can hardly run, weird signing to be honest, but he saw him as a better defensive option after shipping 4 goals so quick.shirty5 said:

Just seen it was Blackpool 👀0 -
I always assumed we had signed Apter as competition for TC. The Blackpool fans told us he couldn't defend, he is small and, whilst feisty, clearly doesn't have a defensive mindset.
With TC now on no goals and 2 assists, surely it is time for him to have a rest, maybe Apter has a spot to fill further up the pitch.
Currently it looks a very odd/poor signing of a player with plenty of talent who doesn't fit the system at all.10 -
My thoughts exactly. Get him in and give TC a rest.Athletico Charlton said:I always assumed we had signed Apter as competition for TC. The Blackpool fans told us he couldn't defend, he is small and, whilst feisty, clearly doesn't have a defensive mindset.
