  • All I heard on budget on our big day out was that the owners are going to give the Championship a real go - not making up numbers and investing more to compete. Won’t be the size of Wrexham’s or Birmingham’s budget, nor those clubs still benefitting from parachute payments, but sounds like we will be competitive.

I am expecting/hoping that most of our signings will be Championship, overseas and Prem players now in their twilight…

JRS certainly didn’t rule out coming to us when I spoke to him and I think £5m + add ons including future %age of sales fee is the sort of deal we’ll be pursuing.

Our cloth was cut for L1, to stay in the Champ you need to be investing £5-10m per annum to stay in it and not stand still.

Excited for what develops over the summer. Transfer window phase 1 opens tomorrow!
Really can’t see us shelling out 5m on one player.
Is Jason Euell still our record transfer buy at £4.75m? And that was over 20 years ago when we were an established Premier League club.

JRS didn’t rule it out, but are you saying you heard something that suggests we’ll be making an offer?
Doesn’t fit the formation or even style of play, and palace will demand a ridiculous fee there’s nothing to suggest this would be good a deal for us other than the fact he had a good season in L1 when the rest of our team were awful and our tactics involved giving him the ball at every opportunity
Yeah I don’t think he’s a realistic target based on what we know, but if he was I’m sure NJ would use him in a similar role to TC, which he’d be a good fit for as defending isn’t his strength. Not sure he’d press hard enough for NJ, which is an important part of fitting the style.

You can’t force contracted players to go out on loan.
It requires agreement and desire from two clubs and the player.
I remember Viggo Jacobsen (of Oostergaard fame) was at Charlton for a couple of seasons way out of the picture as a player but still getting a wage.
Such a thing is an option for Ahadme
I only saw Jacobsen once, and he played very well at home to West Ham - was he injured after that?

Would expect TT to go for a nominal fee either to Northampton or someone in the promotion race in League 1. Alex Mitchell is the toughest one in the squad to call , I can see both sides of it but would expect him to stay ultimately as depth along with Zach.
Alex is not good enough for top of L1, let alone the Championship. Not seen enough of Zach.

TT - not good enough for Championship; nor is AMB, Ahadme, Mbick

Squad players to retain - Docherty, Macauley G, Leaburn, Anderson

Jurys still out….Kanu, Zach M, Dixon, Asimwe

Views all mine and probably much to argue with!

Pretty sure he was rotated in the Sheffield United team. Didn’t make himself irreplaceable.
At 5-10m there’s better value for us at this stage.
  • I’m not surprised by the players that we’ve released. Chuks is only good for 20mins at most and has no mobility. Although Watson is a solid L1 player, I didn’t think he’s up to the championship. As for Thierry Small, read Joe Aribo. He’ll get a better offer from another club and will be offski, IMO

It’s easy to knock the squad at the moment, but jump back a year and Coventry  as an example was getting stick and how Dobson was a better player.
With a stronger midfield and rock solid defence we saw how good Coventry really was. His ceiling is way higher than Dobsons.

If we spend well then the quality should increase again and you’ll see the best of Coventry and Docherty.
A couple of tweaks at the back, and a true creative midfielder to carry us forward and link to the forwards will see less pressure on Docherty and Coventry.

Our best 11 currently is in the bottom quarter of this league.
Our current bench will see us relegated.

    Coventry - yes
Docherty - squad player at best, but in my view he is not good enough for the Championship

No was just referring to the player’s attitude toward the idea when we spoke. Not reading too much into the convo just sharing its direction.

He started that game, even hit the bar, but after that he simply went out of the picture.
The game was beamed to Denmark.

I might be the only one who sees the Chuks release as a bad move. He is Championship "game changer" level. One more year?
    You’re the only one.
    ...Maybe 🙄
  • No surprises about chuks but I have to say at the beginning of this season he was there when you needed him and did make a difference.. Psychologically, he is obviously a complex character, but there were no groans when a decision was made to bring him on. Very talented, very strong but not practical to keep him
  • Pretty expected. Thought we may have kept Watson but he’s not a starter and we’ll be looking to upgrade.
The hardest player to get rid of will be Ahadme.
Still got 3 years left on his contract and I doubt any club above league one will be interested.
    A terrible signing
Our only hope is someone like Burton or Cambridge come in for him where he has played well before and can match his wages.

Take the hit and free up some room. Utter dud.
I think he will be loaned out with us picking up a percentage of his wages. The downside of promotion is that it will edge him towards the tra safer fee we are quoted to have paid but probably made up of target payments.

With Watson I would not be surprised if he joined Jacko or Orient.
  • There are some right miseries on here.
The season finished less than a week ago but already...........
Most of the squad are not "championship quality ".
If we don't sign at least 10 players we're getting relegated.
The owners are not going to spend any money.
Plus what other negativity people can think of.

I'm certain NJ and the recruitment team know exactly who and what we need and have already started the process.
I know it's all about opinions but we've just got promoted can we not celebrate for a little while  before we start the doom and gloom.
    COYR 🔴 ⚪️
Many individuals were also saying that the current squad were not ‘promotion chasing’ and doubled down on that in January when we effectively thinned the squad down.

Yet here we all are now.

I’m not feeling unduly worried at the moment, and feel like we have the structure and personnel in place to get the correct players in.

I would happily have Chuks available on a 9-strong bench...if we didn't have to pay him. We would, however, and therein lies a large part of the problem. It's just not a good use of resources.

I would like to see Taylor given a chance, very good dead-ball kicker, we haven't really seen if he can fit in.
Just had an operation on his ankle and is likely to be out for some time.

Coventry yes, Docherty no. We need a proper fetch and carry 8 in midfield. He could hardly do that in L1( one reason we became a long ball team) so very unlikely in the Champ. Maybe keep as a reserve, but really would be better for him to go back to L1.

    AMB
    A Mitchell
Berry or Docherty (keep one as backup)
    Ahadme
    Taylor
Probably Asimwe, too big a step up now

None good enough for the Champ

No way Berry or Doch are moving on
If they are our midfield we will go down. We had to play the ball over their heads for most of the season as they could not boss the midfield. Reserves only.
  • It's not unreasonable to hope that one of the young 'uns makes a significant step up, in the manner of Alfie Doughty, who I don't think featured at all the 18-19 promotion season.

But you can't assume it when working out a recruitment strategy...it's more of a bonus if it happens

Really can’t see us shelling out 5m on one player.

If you include the sell-on fees paid to Ipswich, it’s Darren Bent.
I thought Dipswich were our feeder club at the time so surely we got Benty on the cheap? Mates' rates and all that.

    😉

£2.5m initially but not with the fees they would have got from us after we sold him.
  • Oxford,Pompey and Derby all struggled for most of the season and it was not until the last part of the season they all started picking up survival points,I think all of them were mostly in relegation positions for quite a few months.
  • I think promotion can give you a slingshot and I am not ruling out competing for a Premier League place. All of our stars have to allign, yes, but it isn't impossible.
