Miles Leaburn - Signs New 3 Year Contract (p77)

The thing I always find weirdest with the criticism of Leaburn is this idea that he's only playing because of who his dad is, which comes up a shocking amount. As if Nathan Jones gives a fuck who Carl Leaburn was! There's plenty to criticise about Miles' play at the moment without adding in the bizarre idea that Nathan Jones, one of the most single-minded managers going, is beholden to the fact Miles is the son of our 1994 player of the year.18

If he didn't already have the number of first-team appearances that he does, I would suggest a loan away to League One for the second half of the season to build his confidence back up would do him wonders.
Once Kelman and Godden do eventually come back, I can't see the justification for him playing based on his output this season.3 -
Until the injury at Welling I think if he'd had a decent season he could have got a good move for his career.
To me it seems he is now struggling after a long period out and he's not the same player.
I'd suggest he'll end up being a league 1/ championship player at best.0 -
Strangely, I don't think I've ever read or heard a single person say this (although they must have if you've heard it).Garrymanilow said:The thing I always find weirdest with the criticism of Leaburn is this idea that he's only playing because of who his dad is, which comes up a shocking amount. He gets called a nepo selection around every single game on here and there are a lot of others who say stuff like “he’s only here because of his name/dad”Covered End said:

I think it should be noted that position that Miles is being asked to play now is a position that he has never, to my knowledge, occupied, or if he has then it was a short lived experiment. We are playing him as target man when he previously achieved success playing off the front man, this lump it up to Miles, has also affected Sonny Carey, and probably Tyreece Campbell, it's not how we play normally but it's where we are.8

Miles ran himself into the ground today and he’ll know better than anyone that was a terrible miss. Be good if we could support all of our players, yes, especially the young ones coming through the academy.7

I have read it on multiple occasions on here and could find it but won’t because I don’t want to call other posters out…!Covered End said:

however; I think Leaburn is a good player despite his ups and downs, thought he was a real handful for them today - the miss was awful but he put it about, some great touches under pressure, worked hard and is still full of potential and only 22.
people suggesting that we should reject 5m for mbick based on a couple of goals in league one yet also criticising Leaburn 🤯
I still believe he has a great future ahead of him and whilst I also like olaofe, I can definitively say he will never play premier league football. Leaburn might.6 -

Not as bad as I expected - think the criticism is OTT. Under pressure from the keeper...CAFC_boi said:https://youtu.be/Q6O6kltCxIg?si=ZeqVK01Vred0bu2LThe miss is at 50 seconds on the link - actually worse than I thought it was going to be, harder to do what he did then score!0 -

Miles has not been the same since his two serious injuries, during which he obviously had a growth spurt which can change the mechanics of his running, turning etc. He lack of spring when jumping likely to do with the recovery from injury.
Also I would not be surprised that his long time out from injury plays on his mind.
Given time and maturity of thought he will learn new skills to compensate for these issues.0 -
Would probably benefit massively from a 6 month loan in League One.Sadly, we can’t afford to do that so he stays.Don’t expect much from him because he’s playing his first proper season at this level, however, he has to do the basics right. Too many times he’ll bring the ball down beautifully or beat a man and then play a horrific pass that sets us immediately on the back foot. That finish yesterday was a sitter. You can’t miss those chances if you want to avoid a relegation battle.1

He wins plenty of headers - issue is they don’t often find our players when we’re attacking which is probably a combination of him needing to get better direction / control on them and him building a partnership with a fellow striker who can anticipate better. There was also a blatant one yesterday where he tried to jump and their defender had two handfuls of his shirt - unseen by the officials and those of our fans who were looking to find fault. What’s often overlooked is his defensive role especially at set pieces - he cleared plenty yesterday.2

All forwards miss chances - we create so few that we expect the ones we do to all be taken.
I don't think the chance is as straightforward as everyone is making out.0 -
I’m not completely giving up on him yet. He might not hit the heights we first hoped when he broke through, but he can still be a good player at this level at least.
He’s not the same player as when he first broke through, doesn’t look as quick, which might be from a combination of injuries and growing.
He’s got good close control, has scored different types of goals, and wins headers at both ends of the pitch.
His hold up play is still inconsistent, some games he looks strong, others too easily outmuscled, and he doesn’t keep possession as well as you want him to with poor passes and misdirected headers. These are usually the areas that improve with experience.
He’s not scoring this season, but I think most would agree our service to our strikers needs to improve. If it does, we might see him get a few goals and with that build up some consistency and more confidence that he can play at this level.
Same with Tanto and TC, it wouldn’t surprise me if any of them had a better second half of the season. Not saying they will, but it’s happened with other players plenty of times in the past.2
