    Happy B'day Eric.

Not The Valley, but doesn't look like The Goldstone Ground either.

Was a lovely fella but fourth choice keeper behind Bartram, Uytenbogaardt and Marsh so was allowed to join Brighton who were then in the Third Division.
    Happy Birthday Eric.

Was Langton a Charlton fella and what prompted the graffiti?

Yes . He was a Charlton fan. The explanation for the graffiti is complicated.

    Married Deirdrie Barlow?

Still is a Charlton fan. Had season ticket in covered end for as long as I remember.
He has done the 92 and most of them with Charlton.
What promoted the graffiti, best ask him.

  • Would love to know!
  • Not a photo but a map - some people might be interested in the latest edition of the map of Greater London in Anglo-Saxon days, showing the location of "Cerletone" relative to other local villages. The substack article explains the process of drawing it based on surviving documents, there being no maps from anything like that long ago.

  • These are fantastic pics....what a brilliant away kit. The game I am guessing was the Derek Halls 11 v George Best 11 played at Welling Utd to raise funds for the club.

How come Best ended up in a Charlton shirt? What is does mean is there are two (white) Addicks shirts worn by the great man (the other, of course, being for Les Berry testimonial).

The greatest player ever seen wearing a Charlton shirt.
    And Georgie Best.

I saw Best play at The Valley in a Charlton shirt when he was 40. He also failed to show at Welling on a later occasion. Peter Bonetti played though.

Said to be George Tadman 1938. I liked it for the view of the South Terrace.

I saw Georgie Best playing for Fulham at the Cottage in the 70s.
Was an end of season charity game, finished 7-7 and Bestie and Rodney Marsh spent most of the game trying to tackle eachother while playing for the same team.

    Jock Campbell?

Yes.  we've done this one to death a few times.

We understand it to be Huddersfield Town's, Alf Whittingham who is taking on Jock Campbell at a muddy 'The Valley' in 1947.

For me, the most intriguing aspect of the picture is not the pitch.  I've played on worse.

It's trying to work out the lead-up.

Almost everyone is in the Huddersfield half and fairly static.  Whittingham has obviously been fed the ball in a counter-attack, but he seems complete unsupported.

No matter.  Jock will sort him out.  And, if he doesn't, here come three Charlton team mates to help him out, two of which are joined at the hip and are recently returning from a little jaunt down our left wing.

    Are you watching, Nathan?
