In the interests of saving our openers from having a difficult 45 minutes at the crease that is stumps.

The major positive from today is not just Stokes taking 6 wickets but bowling 16 overs

    Archer       12.3-2-49-1
    Atkinson   16-4-62-1
    Stokes       16-3-52-6
    Wood         8-1-29-0
    Tongue      13-1-63-1
    Root           14-0-117-1
Spin it another way.....the major negative is that without him the other bowlers wont get enough wickets to bowl them out for under 500.

Love it.  That's the golfiest comment of the series so far.

Wondering how many tests we get into the series until the Aussies try Fergus O'Neill. Massively impressive in the CC this season for Nottinghamshire in a brief spell. Perhaps ironically more suited to English conditions where he's not the quickest but swings it massively.
Good shout. Notts have signed him for 2026 and 2027 - he should be spot on for the next Ashes over here!

Don't think we'll see him this winter because it will be Doggett or Neser if there's injuries to the main bowlers but I think he'll cause real damage in the next Ashes over here. 21 wickets at 17.90 in 4 matches is a pretty exceptional return and I'd expect him to lead the Notts attack again.

But concern that others didn't look threatening and Wood has had to go off.

Apparently the plan was always for Wood to bowl 8 overs and he should be ok to bowl on day 3

Good news.  Although, if true, it's probably not good news for the career prospects of one particular headline writer at the Telegraph...

Especially as the reporter who tweeted what I posted was Nick Hoult, chief cricket correspondent at the Telegraph

I hope the Aussie quicks take the same attitude when we have to face 45 minutes before stumps...

Baistow had extended his contract at Yorkshire until the end of 2028. I've always got the impression that he's been dedicated to his county, in the way others like Root aren't.
  • Series Result: 2-2
    Highest run scorer: Joe Root
    Most wickets:  Josh Tongue
Will Root get a century? Yes
When will Cummins appear? 3rd test
How many tests will Archer manage? 3
How many opening combos do Australia use? 2

Well this is confusing. They've substituted Rew for Lawes on the scorecard with Atkinson bowling Rew for 55. Then Stokes gets Lawes out for a duck for his fifth wicket. Knew that stand between the "Surrey boys" was fake news.
Just to be clear this was 17-year-old Thomas Rew that hit 55 and who will keep and not his older brother, James. They are a really talented pair but quite why James, who is in the Lions squad and who was called up for the England squad in the summer, was left out I do not know. Equally, the fact that Cox hasn't taken the gloves suggests that he still hasn't got over his finger issues in which case he won't be the next on the block should Smith or Pope get injured.

Unfortunately the Lions played in a Bazball manner, resulting in most of Stokes' wickets being slogs to boundary fielders. Unlikely that Smith and Marnus will do the same.

Carse coming in suggests that Wood has at least gone for a scan/has a concern over fitness. Be interesting to see who bowls tomorrow

The scan was scheduled for today but he was at the ground "doing laps" but I have no idea if that was running or not, I'd assume so

Even if he's OK to bowl here, I can't see the point in Wood playing in the First Test unless he bowls at least another 15-20 overs in the middle. He hasn't played a game for nine months and we're expecting him to rock up in the peak of fitness and on the money? Better he misses this one and is fully tuned up for the rest of the series than we're down a bowler during what will be a vital Test.

If we go with five seamers then Archer, Atkinson, Carse, Tongue and Stokes doesn't sound awful to me and it's not like we don't have someone with the extra pace because Archer can be the one to bowl in three or four over spells of not holding back.

Of more concern is the spin department. The fact that Bethell took three lower order wickets doesn't make him a Test bowler and perhaps the likes of Stokes and Pope taking Bashir apart won't have done that bowler too much by way of confidence for whenever he appears in the series. That won't have escaped the notice of the Aussie batters either.

Pope actually made exactly 100, and was out bowled by Bashir, while Wood didn't bat. For some reason your scorecard gave Wood 31 of Pope's runs  :D

BBC also has Pope scoring 100 - and we all know they are the bastion of truth.

Mark Wood has been cleared of any hamstring injury following the scans he was taken for after Day 1.

    https://www.ecb.co.uk/news/4402705

Following precautionary scans on Friday, England fast bowler Mark Wood has been cleared of any concerns regarding his left hamstring.

He is not expected to feature today - the third day of England’s warm-up match against the Lions XI at Lilac Hill Park, Perth.

Wood will continue to train as planned in the build-up to the first Test in Perth.

Massive news - Hazlewood has joined Cummins  and Abbott in  missing the First Test through injury. Neser has been added to their squad.
